What class would you consider the best at taking down big named mobs solo? Consider not just the ability to take them down, but to get to get in and break/clear what ever yard trash may need disposed of first.
I've seen clerics take down some bigger older nameds. I've also heard of Pally's and SK's being able to solo the Crystallos Key quest. It really just depends on your gear and what your looking to do.
Most impressive I've seen was an enchanter taking down Bastion of Thunder nameds a few years ago using charm, she had more tricks up her sleeve than a politician.
This was well before the increased level cap and Plane of Time gear was still some of the best available.

I have heard of more SK being the first ones to solo named mobs. With each expansion and the level raise, it seems like the SK are the first to take out some of the older mobs. No idea if they are the best at it, or if they are just the most puplicized.
Monks would be pretty good at this. The ability to fd and have decent dps would allow for them to do many named with ease.
