I saw that eq is allowing characters to be copyied to the test server does this mean they get all the benefits that newbies characters get, as far as the vet rewards? Just wanted to know

Yes. Characters on Test get all the Vet rewards, access to all expansions and double experience. Note that copied characters cross over with no platinum and all of their gear will be flagged as No Drop.

Beyond the obvious downsides to being on a test server, there's also a very small population even in comparison to today's scene.

I transfered/copied over to test last week, and I can say I am never going back to live again LOL. But Test is not for everyone. I personally tend to solo/duo alone, and with the small population, that works out well. The community on Test is very friendly and helpful, and general chat is more like guild chat than the spam filled general channel on live servers.

Although, fair warning, if you are a ubah-raider and go there thinking you are elite, you might as well stay on live. You might very well be elite, but people there don't care about the 700HP gear or your 2000 AAs. And the zones that most high levels on test hunt in are probably old news to you.

I popped onto Test for a bit last night. Took my lvl 57 necro (copied) to Blackfeather Roost and oooohhh man that experience is ADDICTING! She got about 10 AAs in the half hour of running lesson. The zone was pretty busy on the first level at least. Lots of lvl 60s running around so finding a group might not be quite impossible.

Yea Blackfeather is great place there on test. I have a 62 CLR/SK combo I run there. Most mobs are LB, but there is not alot of DPS in that combo, so I stick with LB's. Exp is still great. And it is fairly easy to find a group there.

I have not checked out RSS or Sunderrock on test, but PoStorms is usually empty, less my MNK/DRU combo. Occasionally I will see someone else in there, but not often.

Comparing to live servers, I would say there are a few disadvantages. Bazaar traffic is very slow. I myself have a trader, mainly tradeskill stuff and the occasional defiant drop that I get. It can be hard to find what you want, prices are reasonable though, as there is no plat selling farmers running around.

Also the server does get small patches often. Usually down for an hour, and most of the time you get a warning about it. And they don't worry about what time it is or anything. If they have a fix for something, they bring the server down, patch it, and bring it back up. Since I started late last week, I've know of about 4-5 patches that were done, mostly for /testcopy issues.

Only other disadvantage might be grouping. As I mentioned to Mandie, I have a combo that is working Storms right now and early evening CST time, they are usually the only ones there (in a hotzone even).

Otherwise, I love Test, and I am staying there, even if they consider me to be a Proddie (that's what they call people from live "Production" servers. :)

One Word of Caution Before you /testcopy. Stock up on spells (they can be hard to come by in the 60-69 rage), food and water. After you copy over, immediately go to a zone that you know you can survive and farm vendor junk so you can start to build a cache of PP as you will have none when you transfer.

Yep, I should have stocked up on my necro. Her gear is teh suck and I don't imagine there's much in the bazaar there. Oh well, I only spent a couple hours on her so far so I might re-copy her. I call DO OVERS! Smiley: grin

We've had a glut of patches in the last couple of weeks, and that's definitely not the norm. I've been on test a little over a year, and I'd say the "typical" time between patches is anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks. We've just been hit a lot lately due to /testcopy tweaks and bug fixes for the voice chat system. I agree with everything else you said!

A couple of questions about test.

1. Is hotzone xp doubled as well?

2. Is there any information as to what would be done with your characters if for any reason they decided to discontinue the test server? Would they allow you tro x-fer toons out, or simply leave the server up without utilizing it anymore? I would hate to loose, potentially, years worth or progress.

I can only imagine them discontinuing Test if they were to discontinue the game (or at least enhacements/patches to it). In which case you have bigger issues.

Hotzone XP is also doubled on test. The XP in Blightfire when it was a hotzone was insane. I think on 2 different occasions I gained 2 levels in 2 kills on dark blue mobs. But I digress....

As for your second question, I agree with Jophiel's assessment.

Also, you'll occasionally hear rumors that there is no GM support on Test, which, in my experience, couldn't be further from the truth. I've had many occasions to call on GM support and they have always been prompt and helpful.

Which server is the Test server? I have been looking and I do not see one flagged as Test.

could you get some dropable gear on a live server and move it over to your permanent toon on test?

When you testcopy, all of your copied gear (on Test) becomes No Drop.

A lot of people I know on FV are borrowing items before /testcopy. obviously you only want to do this with someone you know.

There is a separate executable file in your eq directory. I believe it is testeverqust.exe? Run this file instead of the normal exe and it will bring will load the normal updater/log-in menus. If you plan to play both test and normal servers, it is helpful to make a second copy of the entire eq directory. This will keep you from having to update back to the normal game when ever you do not wish to play on test.
#20 Sep 11 2008 at 12:04 PM Rating: Excellent
why? does it take along time to update back and forth?

It's usually not too long, but can be depending on the differences between test and normal servers at any given time.

Best thing to do if you're planning on checking this out is to copy your entire Sony folder to another location and make a shortcut from that TestEverQuest.exe file. This way you will not go thru constant overpatching between regular server and test server ... heh, like the song says: "you gotta keep em separated."

My husband and I have very little game time anymore and have decided to make test our home base now so that we can actually move forward with aa's and xp. It's very hard to do with limited time on regular servers when we are usually just soloing or duoing.

It appears we are not the only ones doing this as I've noticed a rise in the number of players on test. The player base seems to be staying mature so I can only assume the others are people like ourselves with less time to play but still wanting their characters to "be all that they can be".

We are happy SoE decided to give this another try and would recommend it to anyone with limited game time that are interested in individual (as opposed to raid) character advancement.
