ok...I recently reactivated my old account. I have a 55 mage wearing mostly apothic gear from PoH if my memory serves me correctly.
Keep in mind that it has been 7 years since I have played.
Also, I am in the middle of the original epic quest. I have or atleast had the Staff of Elemental mastery: Water and Earth or maybe it was just water, I can't remember. I havnt logged on to check yet...still getting setup and refamiliarizing myself with the user interface in the tutorial. Anyway..is it worth trying to complete? And can it be completed if I'm not in a guild?

Good for it's time but rather outdated by Intricate Defiant drops, hotzone augments and tradeable gear.
Not sure of the value of the wizard 1.0, but it is your class epic and for me, getting the ranger twin swords was an EQ highlight.
It may be difficult if not in a guild (meaning if you don't have a circle of friends to help) but often pleas for help will get a friendly responce depending on your server.

I would just find a zone where the defiant armor drops for your class. Skyfire mnts was good for some cloth drops recently. Go kill the "new" elite sand giants in no and so ro for cash, go to bazzar and see what is cheap. If you have pro ro expansion you can get an extra cash exp and faction by hailing the human in plat armor near the oasis in so ro for a task killing the giants and the leaders.
I was able to get my Wizard's 1.0 with regular group. However this is a very strong group, and we were all level 75 at the time. I had really never had any interest in getting the epic untill the Druid and Necro in the got thiers - then I decided it was probably worth the effort - just for the satisfaction of having done it. So, it can be one grouped, depending on the group.
