Convert? Population? Several Questions.Follow

#1 May 19 2008 at 11:03 AM Rating: Default
Hello all.

I currently play WoW and have been off and on for about 2 years now.

I used to play EQ quite frequently, for about 5 years. I've been out since the Planes of Power expansion, so I've missed a WHOLE lot.

Here are my questions:

1. Is EQ still the grind it was before? i.e. - Basically no soloing, always need a group to level.

2. Is the leveling still as slow as it was before?

3. Drop rates? I remember drop rates on some items being insanely low and took camping of hours to get.

4. Has the questing system changed at all? I know WoW leveling is comprised mostly of doing quests, whereas EQ was always about grinding for XP.

5. My old character was a Ranger. How do they rank-up now? Are they still one of the best DPS classes?

6. As far as Rangers go. How much has ranged damage come along? Or are Rangers still limited to melee damage to do their best in groups?

7. What servers have a decent population at most levels? My old server was Luclin, anyone have some info. about that server?

8. How easy/hard is it to make cash on the game now?

9. If I can get my old account back I would probably be starting with a 59 Ranger. Are there still "Hell Levels"?

10. How slowly do AA's come nowadays?

I'm asking these questions because I'm considering coming back. WoW is just getting old. Alot of the content and players have switched over to PvP, which I've never liked. The PvE world is just kind of bland because the majority of players sit in battlegrounds and PvP all the time.

I would have a LOT of information to catch up on, obviously. That's another reason I'm considering coming back.

I "came back" to WoW not too long ago and thought I would have a hard time, or "long time" catching up on content. That's just not the case. WoW is REALLY easy compared to what I remember about EQ. The adventuring part of WoW is non-existent. You have a map for everything, and the "discovering a new world" aspect is pretty much nil.

I haven't played EQ in YEARS and I still remember zones, traveling routes, etc. because I HAD TO LEARN THEM. You don't have to remember any of that in WoW. You have flightpoints to get from city to city, etc.

Also, I have NEVER felt that sense of "danger" in WoW. I remember the first time I went out into the world on my Ranger back in the day, and I almost felt a little bit scared... Why? Because I could die quite easily by myself. WoW? Yeah, at the right level you can solo anything. What do you need to be afraid of?

There is a certain feeling I got with EQ I have never really received from WoW. That's the MAIN reason I'm considering coming back.

My problem, however, is that I'm considered a "casual" player. With only 4-5 hours of play time a night. Is EQ too much of a time-sink for me, or can I still make it in the EQ world with my limited ammount of playtime each night?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any replies.

1. No. Depending upon your class of course, the amount of content that has been released since PoP will provide many places for you to solo. Group content is also been improved upon. There is also several places where a good duo can hunt successfully.

2. No. Leveling is actuall pretty quick, depending on how you do it. I would definitely group. The experience will go very quick in a good group, given hot zones and Lesson of Devoted, etc.

3. Hard to answer this. Drop rates suck for some items, and doesnt for others. Depends on what your looking for. I spent two days late last year for SEoC, and spent 2 weeks on the same item several years ago. So, dont really know what to tell ya.

4. Your in for a big culture shock. Your not going to be able to get some spells unless you get the required faction. One of the ways to get this faction is doing quests (over and over again). There are even some very nice items that have been introduced that require you go through a series of quests to earn them. The Hand Augment in TBS is an example.

5. Rangers still have a valid role in any raid or group. They are still very good DPS, but whether or not they are the best depends upon who you ask. I will say that they are good DPS, and leave it at that. Rangers are an all around great class to have in a group/raid.

6. I think ranged DPS has come quite far since PoP, given the archery AAs, and improvement in the Bows that are available. Your archery at certain levels will outmatch your melee DPS. Your melee DPS will eventually outmatch your archery DPS, as you gain levels, and AAs. I use both, depending upon the target. Still, at level 80, I find that I melee about 90% of the time.

7. I dont know what to tell you. I am on the Drinal server, and like it. The population seems to be just right in my opinion.

8. Its very easy to make cash. Sell stuff. The drangol gobbies in Loping Plains drop a very respectable amount of plat, and thats just one example.

9. I dont think "hell levels" still exist. I could be wrong though.

10. They have just implemented scaled AA development. It will be easier to earn AAs, until you hit a certain number of AAs (750?). So up until that point AAs will be easy to get, then you will start earning them at a normal rate.

You still have that ability to discover/learn the content in this way, but you will also find that there is support out of game in this area. Such as downloading maps from eqmaps.com. There is also this site that can give you info when you need it.

I would consider 4 to 5 hours a night ALOT of time. With that much play time, you could be an asset to any guild.

Bottom line, you could come back to EQ; start a new character, and still have a good time. It is still a very fun game, despite the many changes since you last played.

Thank you very much for your informative post.

Now, I just need to see if I can get my account back.

I don't have access to that old e-mail. I used gamecards to pay for it. And I can't remember anything past my account name. That should be fun.

Also, is the anniversary edition that was being sold still available in stores?

I believe the most recent expansion, SoF, came with all the old expansions so the anniversary edition isn't needed.

You can buy Secrets of Faydwer in stores. I know for sure you can get it at Best Buy, at least, since I got my copy from there. It comes with all other expansions. Said it on the front of the box.

The game has become a lot easier to get high level and you can gain AAs quite quickly now. There is still quite a lot of challenge, though, but I found that was mostly from boss battles/doing instances with an improper/not end-game geared group. I think it will take you some getting used to, but you will probably enjoy the way EQ is now.

If you find you don't enjoy the way EQ is now, then you can give my classic guild a try, if you want: www.theforgottentravelers.com (I hope that wasn't considered advertising or spam or anything. I was just wanting him to know that guilds like that exist if he doesn't find himself enjoying the current EQ)
