My very first character was a human paladin on rallos zek (now just zek). I was such a noob - both human and paladin. No gear, no plat, no experience at playing, nothing.
I only played that toon for about two months from May to July of 2001, but a lot of things happened to me with that character that influenced my play later. The only real negative was all the ganking that was going on, and when it reached a point where I felt I was being singled out because of my weaknesses, I quit and deleted. He made it to about level 7.
Years later (about a year ago), older and wiser, I created a new character on Zek that I felt would give me a maximum of strengths and a minimum of weaknesses for a poorly geared character - an Iksar Necro. I only have him to level 24, but I often entertain the thought of playing him...then I get too busy doing other things. One interesting thing about modern-day zek - people seem to like you more if you help folks out than if you're some bad@ss, twinked-out character killer. Seems that even on zek, no one likes a bully.
Anyway, my necro has lost a lot of fights, but he's won some too. It's much easier for me to deal with the losses now, because I no longer lose plat or gear - just bragging rights. And yes, it does get the heart rate up when I'm playing compared to a blue server.
all in all, playing on Zek is fun, but you have to keep an open mind with regard to your place in the world (you're a target to both players and mobs), that experience trumps gear, gear trumps newbieness, and most important, that it's just a game. Don't take it too seriously. I think that was the mistake I made last time, although I must admit the gear and plat losses were unbearable (6 plat, *and* my banded armor leggings! Nooo!) I also strongly advise that you play a character class that is as self-sufficient as possible, as the bazaar on zek is pretty picked-over.
So just have a casual attitude while you're there and you should be fine.
