Inspired by a thread about the myth that CHA effects the efficiency of fear spells, I must ask -

What are some of the EQ urban legends and myths that you have heard?

Only one I can think of at the moment is the anti-camp radius.

Surprisingly, in the 3+ years I've played, I haven't heard any. Now I'm curious as to what there is.

When I was a young dark elf, around the time when PoP came out.
I asked in nek forest, what the book was for.
An uber sk guy, wearing the latest in norrathian fashon I now know was from vex thal told me in tells that they are bugged and DT you when you click them.. I really trusted in him,he was uber and all knowing.
I did not know what PoK was for at least a year of casual play, when people told me to click the book I would say "Hell no im not falling for that trick!"

oh and I also fell for the /question command back then. try it out.

Heh. Alleviating quite a bit of lag in zones by telling people that /ex would tell you how much experience you have, and how much you need to level...

Here is a thread on the official Sony boards about EQ Urban Legends.

I remember this one from when I was just starting out...

Edit to ask: Can someone clarify what the "Anti-camp Radius" is?

I fell for /ex like 8 years ago or so. I remember being in a group in FM (Frontier Mountains) with a couple of RL friends from school. One of them thought it would be funny to tell me that "/ex will give you a free wolf form!"

He lied to me, but they all got a good laugh out of seeing my LinkDead in the middle of a pull.

Running over a spawn point helps a mob spawn...used to see people ( and by people, I mean me Smiley: dubious) running back and forth over a spawn point.

The move thing.

Moving while fighting helps to hit the mob more often, as does adjusting the view angle (seeing the mob's face). When you get more than 3 fizzles in a row, step to the side and the fizzles are over. You also get more skillups in tradeskilling when you look into a corner or don't stay in the same spot while combining.

I confess, I still do these things. ;-)

The biggest, most intriguing one I ever tried to find was the Clockwork Dragon that lives underneath Ak'Anon. I know, Big Bynn or whatever is in game now but there was always the rumors of an under-water passage in Ak'Anon to get to the dragon.

If someone was within a certain distance of the spawn point, only a PH would spawn and not the named. It was thought that 989/Verant/Sony wanted you to crawl through a dungeon and not set up camp; therefore, they would only spawn named when you weren't near the spawn point.

My friends and I were convinced that Holly Windstalker would kill you if she caught you with grizzly pelts in your inventory. We made many quick runs to South Qeynos avoiding Holly to turn in rabid grizzly pelts for plat and exp. If nothing else, it made it exciting.

She will attack you if she sees you actually fighting bears though. Oddly, this applies even to the diseased bears. Which is probably where you guys got the idea.

I've always liked the myth that short people run faster. Some players continued to insist this for years because it felt like you were going faster if you were lower to the ground.

A lot of the myths were based on events that occurred during beta or very early in the game. Various sea monsters and rare triggered spawns were believed to be in the game either because some dev mentioned it as something planned (but never implemented), or because there was some one time event that had the mob(s).

Another thing that added to the myths was the sheer number of items in the game that ended up having no purpose at all. They were originally intended for some quest or tradeskill, but it wasn't implemented, but the item was still left in the drop tables. The Plains Pebble was a classic example of this.

Other myths revolved around getting various mobs to spawn. The "tricks" for spawning Pzin in QH were all over the map (literally). The reality was that she was just a rare spawn and so you were unlikely to get her. I also remember some named mob in S. Karana for some shield quest. Never did get that guy to spawn...

AGI affecting runspeed myth was based on logical observation. If you were overloaded, you ran slower *and* your agility decreased. This lead some to assume that agi affected runspeed. It didn't. It did slightly affect AC though, but not significantly if you had 75 or higher.

Anti-camp radius was born out of sheer frustration at some camps. That and the fact that it seemed (and still does) that mobs will spawn and respawn over time, but once a named spawns in place of a PH, it'll stay there (unless the server resets). This causes the casual player to observe that it's not uncommon for named mobs to be up when they first arrive in a zone (especially if it's been empty for awhile), but that those same named don't seem to spawn much when they're actively camping them.

There were lots of theories about the clock tower in Qeynos IIRC. It was clickable, but didn't do anything. IIRC, there was also some lamp or other in Ak'Anon that you could click but also didn't do anything. People had a lot more time to sit and ponder strange things in the game back then I think...

Some mobs were so rare that they seemed like they were myths. I have a screenshot somewhere of me fighting the dunedigger in N. Ro. Incredibly rare spawn. The Terrorantula was also super rare. IIRC, there was a period of time when it was dropped off the spawn table, adding to the myth.

Hmmm... Lots of myths back in the day. Can't remember half of them honestly...

Plains Pebble in your inventory made you use a drink less often.

Lucky Cabbage did the same for food.

The throne in old Hate near Maestro would spawn mobs if you sat on it.

Casting Harmony (old druid/ranger AE version) increased your mana regeneration.

I had heard one urban legend about the Enchanter's Target-based Area of Effect Mezz. The legend had it that if one mob resisted they all would. I've even heard of Enchanters that believe this.

Not true, but this myth was probably born of confusing our target-based area of effect mezz with the TB AOE lull, called Wake of Tranquility, aptly nicknamed Wake of Trainquility. If one mob resisted this spell, it may indeed aggro the other mobs and attack. But I've seen enough of some mobs resisting while others didn't to know that each mob in the area of a TB AoE mezz must make its own resist check.

I think this one's been mentioned in a few threads on this subject. Sitting on the throne didn't spawn mobs, but it definitely could cause a train. That's because in the old hate, the throne room was directly below a building on the second floor (the first one you go into when you run up the stairs just out from the throne area in fact). Hate had some "odd" Z-axis issues. Sitting on the throne would quite often cause some players to appear (to the mobs anyway) as though they were on the second floor (cause it's off the ground). This would cause a huge train of 2nd floor mobs to come barreling down the stairs and slam into the raid (likely wiping them all).

There used to be two rooms in Unrest that were "linked" in that they were so close together vertically that anyone sitting in one room was within agro range of mobs in the other. In fact, one of the common tactics if you were in the top room of the tower was to stand on the chairs/table. This would keep you out of agro range of mobs in the room below (until you had to fight something of course!). The throne in Hate was essentially the opposite effect. It raised you up high enough that you might agro stuff from the floor above.

When fighting a mob on a hill, always be standing higher than the mob. This gives you an advantage. Don't ask me what the advantage was, but it was something I heard years ago back when I started lol.

That is because in real life, it is a strategic advantage to have the higher ground; therefore, it must naturally be true in EQ as well.

I remember on Torvo after Velious came out when someone at the EC tunnel started the rumor that Centi Longswords were going to become Lore. Of course these liars were the ones supposedly selling one of the last non-lore ones at a high price ("Get yours now before they become Lore and you can only wield one!").
