Well, I know that WoW has 10 million users, with 60% marketshare. What that tells me is total MMO population is about 16.7 million or so. Of course it's a guess. Which also tells me that EQ population is about 167k or so.
It's still a decent number but it's much less than when they were boasting 450k total numbers.
I am not taking their number as the absolute, just as a guide. Even if they error by 10%, which is very difficult to do as a statistic compilation, unless you just pull the numbers out of air, those numbers are pretty significant. It seems at most EQ has 200k people playing total. Out of those, how many are regular players?
Just trying get things in perspective.
The conversations that I have been a part of related to this have been that WoW has expressed their numbers differently than one would expect.
I have heard that WoW is reporting "active" as any account that has never been deleted, where as, other games are reporting "active" as currently up-to-date paid accounts. So until the companies acutally report what exactly they are reporting, the numbers don't even serve as a good guide.
In the same conversations, many of the other companies don't officially release their numbers; therefore, someone has to extrapolate the information in some innaccurate manner.
