Server populations & consolidationsFollow

Does anyone know if, and if so where, SOE posts the number of subscribers per server?

I'm also curious how folks would feel about a round of server consolidations. Do you feel like your server is under populated?

I play exclusively on Erollisi Marr and while I admit to enjoying being able to get in most any zone and not find it overcrowded, I also notice that the bazaar for trading in dropped and crafted items is really lacking from years past. Would a server consolidation help or hurt?

Sony won't publish the number of subscribers on a server; not sure why. I think a selective consolidation would be nice, where some of the lower pop servers are put together, and maybe combining the Euro server with one of the american ones so that it had a 24 hour population.

There are rumors circulating on the Tunare(E'ci) server that there is in fact another round of server merging in the works. Details are every bit as phenominally skewed as you would expect from a rumor mill. I for one, wouldn't care. More players for me to recruit into my guild!

On the O fpurms recently ( withing the last month or so ) a Dev stated that Mergers are NOT being looked at ,at this time.

Yes in the yearly EQ Producer letter (Jan 08) is written:

Server merges are always a hot topic, some are for and some are against. I can tell you that we keep a close eye on the populations on each server both at peak time and off peak time. We have target numbers that we feel are adequate for gameplay to be fully enjoyed in the EverQuest world. Once player numbers get close to dropping below those numbers we evaluate a server merge. I would like to clear the record though; we are not opposed to server merges. We just want to make sure the timing is right and it is something that will benefit the players. I will keep everyone updated on any movement with server merges once it comes up.

I would not want to see Stromm's population double, or anything even near that.

According to mmogchart.com, EQ has about 1% of total MMO market and EQII isn't much higher. WoW has over 60%. With the shrinking subscribers, I would assume server merger is coming soon.

I wouldn't assume that, as mmogchart is know for being highly innaccurate, especially where SOE games are concerned as they are verytight lipped about server populations.

This is a false comparison. WoW's population percentage doesn't impact the server density in EQ.

What if the MMO market was 1 billion people? Then that would mean 10 million people in EQ. At that point you would need more servers.

What if the market was 50 million and WoW's 60% was mostly casual and inactive players but EQ's player base had a much higher per/day play rate? Now you would have 500,000 players in EQ playing all the time. 25 servers would give each server a 20,000 person population everyday. Most would still call this highly crowded and would be asking for moer servers.

I'm not saying that EQ has 10 million people, just that you can't use the percentage of an estimated market or a comparison of a different game to justify the point that server mergers are going to occur.

Well, I know that WoW has 10 million users, with 60% marketshare. What that tells me is total MMO population is about 16.7 million or so. Of course it's a guess. Which also tells me that EQ population is about 167k or so.

It's still a decent number but it's much less than when they were boasting 450k total numbers.

I am not taking their number as the absolute, just as a guide. Even if they error by 10%, which is very difficult to do as a statistic compilation, unless you just pull the numbers out of air, those numbers are pretty significant. It seems at most EQ has 200k people playing total. Out of those, how many are regular players?

Just trying get things in perspective.

The conversations that I have been a part of related to this have been that WoW has expressed their numbers differently than one would expect.

I have heard that WoW is reporting "active" as any account that has never been deleted, where as, other games are reporting "active" as currently up-to-date paid accounts. So until the companies acutally report what exactly they are reporting, the numbers don't even serve as a good guide.

In the same conversations, many of the other companies don't officially release their numbers; therefore, someone has to extrapolate the information in some innaccurate manner.
