When you hail the spirit shroud npc in Plane of Knowledge a window pops up with a list of categories (i.e., nature spirits). Within these categories will be classes of shrouds you can be. You must level shrouds to open up the later ones in the category.

Shrouds take the basic archetype and give you an average character build. So a real level 60 rogue is much better than a shroud. Oddly, some of the combinations are arguably better than the original class... the low level fairy chanter gets a version of sow for example.

All shrouds get spirit sending, which gates you back to the npc in PoK.

You can make your shroud any level up to you current (in 5 level increments, so if you are level 63 your top shroud is 60).

To level shrouds, most people I know have gone the low-level route. Xp gained in a shroud does go to your real self... but level 15xp doesnt look like much on a level 65 character.

Shrouds seem to have become a quick-fix to questing issues. For example many use the goblin shrouds with sneak/hide to do point of travel quests and risky pickups (doesnt matter if you die if you got the drop you couldn't kill to otherwise).

Another popular one is the evil eye shroud to charm quest turn ins. The Worker's Sledgemallet is in many hands because of this.

Most of the people you see shrouded in PoK are just saving a pet for future use as it will not poof or lose its buffs while you are shrouded.

Goblin rogue shroud is very nice for slipgears gem quest. Also for that aug quest in Direwind where you need to get past the guardians of the gate.I cant say I have ever found a use for the rest of them.
