Bard charm doesn't last long, in a duo with a necro you should probably used any chants and manasong.

Soloing is another story. :) Depending on your level you can fear kite, mezz tank, chant kite or swarm kite.

Fear kite= chain snare, fear, haste if you want or a resist debuff then melee on it's back while it runs.
Mezz tank = Slow, melee songs, when you get low HP, mezz the mobs and regen up, repeat.
Chant Kite = Best dots on 1 mob at a time.
Swarm Kite = pull a bunch of social mobs, charm one, have it attack it's buddies, break charm (invis) just before pet dies, chant it down for full xp.

Swarm kiting is the best solo xp you can get once you figure it out and get the hang of it. Fear and mezz keep your off/def skills up, chant kiting is the safest XP you can get solo.

There is a new (to me at least) command for bards called /melody.

It casts up to three songs over and over for you.

Might be useful for some of this - like chain-casting snare, fear and maybe some attack buff, if fear-kiting.

I have a bard but find it hard to solo her. It's my lack of ... I just have (or had - haven't played her in ages) trouble managing all you have to do to solo really well. Others can solo quite well w/ bards. She's great in groups, though.

I tried having my bard (lvl high 30s) DS kite (drink skin spike potion) and just tank mobs in TT. It did not work well. My bard has what used to be really good gear (a mix of the blue armor we used to quest for - named after the stone the giants drop... forget the name - and I think Singing Steel - Goranga spiked club and an Etherial Longsword (or something)). I think she had Temp or Virt too.

Things just damaged her too fast. I didn't think to mezz when hurt and then regen w/ healing song (I need to look up an instrument swap - or is that one just singing? I'll look it up) - anyway, seems to me that would take a long time and would get frustrating.

Wish I could do this new swarm charm thing. I used to sort of be able to DoT swarm (the old way) w/ SoW on. But this new thing - seems you'd need SoW on (you don't want to be slowing down ever or worrying about casting selos) ... might be awesome.

Bards used to appeal to soloists and level VERY fast when they could swarm kite 30 iceclad snow cougars (or some crazy number like that) at once. I saw a bard swarm kiting those ugly baby aliens in ME or some such zone in the 50s once - he was doing great. Took him a while, but man - he had piles of bodies. This old style was nerfed though, and is gone.

Do group occasionally if you try a bard! Develop those skills - your ability to be a good grouper will serve you well.

EDIT - forgot, I think melody goes like /melody 1 2 3 or /melody 2 4 7 -- the #'s being spell gem, er, song gem slots. I've tried it a little and it seems clunky - i.e. sometimes it doesn't work. Still working out the particulars myself - anyone have any good advice on this? TY

First of the melody command is not limited to 3 songs. You can do /melody 1 2 3 4 5.... basicly as many songs you have up. Bards usually keep up 4 songs in a melody twist, this seem to keep the 4 songs up almost all the time.

If you are to duo with a necro you should let the necro kite. You should be playing manaregen song (when you can get it) and use 3 dots on the mob. The reason for the dots is that they has a debuff to them aswell, making it easier to get the necro spell to stick :)

When it comes to bard solo ability, it takes a bit of practise but is awesome xp when you get the hang of it. The only viable method is charmkiting and here goes a quick explanation of how it goes (might lack a bit sry)

At level 27 you get your first charm spell. Now go to South ro and find the oasis in the middle of it. On this island you will see spectres. Pull this (4-5 at first) and get them to the beach around orc highway. Now notice how slow they move (neat). Now charm one of the spectres with your song, and have it attack one of the others. The entire swarm of mobs should now start to attack your mob (if not you will have to make the swarm pass your mob again before they will engage). When your "pet" gets low on health you just sing your invis song (take note of the 3 sec cast time) and then use your dots to get it all the way down for full xp. Rinse repeat.

This method gets alot better at 49 when you get the selo song that last 2.30, but it is still doable before if you pick your spots. (dulaks harbor entrance is amazing aswell)

the higher lvl charms only have a 30´feet range so you have to be in melee range, but thats a whole different story :) you can get that when and if you have the patience to stick with the bard. Using charm kiting you can get 6 aas per lesson at 80 solo, so not bad :)

Bah became a bit longer than expected.
Good luck and post your server, we might be on the same.

For swarm kiting, an item such as the goblin gaz ring is invaluable.

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1653

It allows you to break charm instantly, without having to try and time a 3 second cast of your invis song. I camped it for my bard and found that it made swarm kiting a million times easier, allowing me to break charm when my pet was at 1% or 2% health and drastically reducing the number of mobs I missed xp on (by failing to break charm before the pet died).

This particular ring drops from a low level mob in lake of ill omen. It is a pain to camp, but if you have the patience for it, it's well worth it.
