To Play or Not to Play?Follow

#1 Nov 19 2007 at 10:04 AM Rating: Default
Since I'm on break from school this week, I've been looking for something to do with my time until my friends get back in a few days. I'm thinking of picking up EQ again...

...but the last time I played was right after PoP was the newest expansion. After peering around these forums (and the SOE forums), it seems like EQ has changed a LOT. Not just in terms of content, but also in terms of the community, ultimate goals, and other very fundamental aspects of the game. With that in mind, I'm trying to decide if I want to invest the money in picking EQ up again. I'm afraid that EQ has turned into WoW. I played WoW for a little bit and didn't enjoy it at all. The community (if you can even call it that) was a collection of pre-teen idiots and the gameplay was way too easy. In EQ, I liked focusing on leveling based on fighting, not quests. WoW just didn't do it for me.

Even when I stopped playing I didn't like the way EQ was going. After PoP came out, there were no people in the zones that used to be crowded (EC, Oasis, Freeport, etc.). And the automated Bazaar changed the whole trading aspect of the game. Call me old school, but I didn't take to the changes too well.

So for those of you that have played since the beginning of EQ and have possibly played WoW, should I give it a shot?

EQ is not WoW.

However EQ, EQII, LoTRO, Vanguard, etc, etc. are really all the same deal, right. You pretend to be some character and together with others, or on your own, you kill make believe monsters and do quests to get 'experience' and better stuff, thereby advancing your character.

The bazaar is still there...it's even been expanded. There is now a buyers area as well as a sellers area. There are even MORE empty zones, but lots more zones in general. It's the same game, but bigger. People who raid will say there's not enough raid content and everything becomse trivial too quick. Those who don't raid will claim that the game is heavily weighed to raiding, and all the good gear goes to the raiders (thing is if you don't raid you don't need raiding gear eh). If you like to solo you will find the place too crowded, if you want a group, the game will be too empty.

From my own personal experience in MMO's, I think that the population of EQ is a bit older (in actual age) but also a more mature MMO bunch (they been playing MMO's longer).

It sounds like it's only a temporary time killer, just play something. (Personally, I'd suggest Vanguard...a truly awesome game imo.)

Your enjoyment of the "old school" might just make you cringe at the EQ that exists nowadays, it hasnt changed 100% but it would definitely be a bit of a shock to someone who hasnt played in a few years.

As for the concerns with the community, I would say that you will find the majority of players are still friendly, and mature. There are always the immature to be found at times (hi there /general chat), and some real bad apples, but in my experience they are few and far between. Lots of people are glad to help out with returning and starting players.

If I had to come up with one negative with the community as a whole. (and I've been guilty of this as well.) it is that many now tend to stick to friends and guildmates for grouping and such, which leaves pickup grouping somewhat difficult. (but not impossible by no means, as some people like to claim, its now just mostly relegated to specific zones, hotzones, if you will.)

I'm guilty of this too. If I'm not finding friends around, I'll solo.

Last week however, I was thinking it was time to expand my EQ social network so I went LFG. I had a group invite for a Katta mission in about 10mins...and not even as MH!!

Took us a few minutes to jive, but we did and we completed it. Everyone did their job and we had fun.
