SoEs lack of *Selling* the game to the PublicFollow

My account is down for a while so I've been getting my fix in the Escape to Norrath Trial. /rant on : It's very sad that SoE hasn't bothered to either release a Cresent Reach type trial or at the very least update the existing trial tutorial. There are so many people in there (have seen over 60 at one time -- in the tutorial -- if you can believe it) and while a few are people like me, most are either trying to get a feel for the game or have been away for several years wanting to see what's changed and maybe come back. SoE is serious slacking IMHO ... the new quick med system isn't even in place in the trial and so all people get is a taste of the same old too much down time. There are a lot of people who would probably pick this game up if they actually could get a feel for what it is *now*. /rant off
Oh yeah and of course I'm in there *selling*, explaining how much better the game actually is than in the out of date tutorial and directing returning players and newbies alike to allah ... hrm ... okay SoE, where's my cut?? (riiiiight)

OP raises a good point. If we like this game our testimonials carry alot of weight. Imagine a simple ad campaign where SOE used long-time players characters saying why they still play.

EQ is not a gremlin, its a model T. The model T is a legend that will never be equalled. The newer games tend to do 1-2 narrow things better with a focus on eye candy over substance. EQ does nearly everything, though not always the best but it keeps evolving to do more.

SOE should do something for new players... and that is make a new server (and tag it as preferred) that no transfers can go to for a year (but do let existing accounts reroll there if they want). After the year its a regular status server and start a new one. They likely don't even need to add actual new servers since it seems that a few of the low-pop existing servers would benefit from a merge judging by the long-term discussion for such.

Allakhazam is the place returning players look, and its the place most of us send newbies when we encounter them. Its a shame that some people choose to regularly vent negativity about a game they presumably still play or have and interest in (otherwise why use these forums?). Alla is SoE's advertising campaign if you will... and they don't pay for it either.

Gbaji... er... Shadowrelm...

I'm not sure what server you play on, but most of the servers I've visited, there's no real problem in finding other players, so long as I stick to the hotzones or fairly decent areas. Of course people aren't going to be levelling in Befallen, Gorge of King Xorbb, or High Hold Keep anymore; those are old zones. New zones have replaced them (as sad as I am to see them go).

I long for oldschool EQ, but the only way I'll ever get that is through one of those stupid hacks or mods or whatever, and I refuse to do that.

You exaggerate too much, Shadowrelm. I know that you think WoW > EQ nowadays, but come on, stop bringing the propaganda here. That's not what always happens. More times than not, I've actually found one or two people (when raising an untwinked newbie) that I can stick with for a long time. We level up together, help each other out, etc. Guilds are there for a reason, too!

There are more than 100 people still playing on each server, so stop acting like they're next to abandoned -.-

agreed, SOE's marketing department is either non-existant, has no budget, and/or consists of devs, who achieved the final state, as described in the "peters principle"...

heck, just look at SOE's website... I give them 1 star (out of five) for usability... same goes for the selfcare sites... crappy at best...

BUT, the game is still good :-D

Yeah, SoE quit marketing EQ pretty much when EQ2 came out.

It's too bad. I think now would be a good time to push it. Lots are getting tired of WoW but are now hooked on MMO's...could grab them.

I think that any players who try a game that's been out a while can be turned off by lack of population in the new areas, but that can be overcome by friendly people.

Try logging in a new character, and asking an easy question, like "How do I turn off my auto-attack?" or "How do I open my map?" and find out how long it takes (.4 seconds normally) before a player bashes you for being an idiot, and you should go play WoW.

Those of us who assist players in learning the game and trying to become a part of our communities are what it's all about!

Community is what keeps players, not marketing.

As for people downloading and trying the game - it happens more then you might think. But keep trying to support EQ. I think you'd be surprised that people will keep trying it, and often, come back to it, the longer it stays out.

In the end though, it's truly a mature game. The content is going to be aimed at the high end. Because that's who still playing.

I can state for the record that newbies are treated absolutely wonderfully in this game. Every question I've asked, whether here or ooc has been answered quickly and politely. I've been up front with strangers who ask me to group with them about my inexperience yry everyone has welcomed me, my questions and my inexperience. In the really good instances I've had quite a few people give me tips that I haven't asked for about how to play my pally better. Joining a guild was very helpful as well.

True, there are lots of empty zones, but that is logical considering the vast size of the game and the length of time it's been around.

So to the naysayers out there, the love of the game is very alive, the people are friendly and helpful, and anyone who might choose to start this game anew I believe would be welcomed with open arms.

I have been on this soap box for a long time now. SOE needs to bring in the new, never played EQ1, player into the game. There also are numerous ways to keep the old player playing even in old zones. SOE needs to take a personal aspect to the game. Bring back excitement and adventure.
Marketing for instance WoW has a counter displays, floor stacks poster etc. You can not even find the game on Game Stop shelves any longer. SoE has further removed the game from the impulse General Public by making any further expansions via downloads from their site only. Their market now consist of the inbred (not meant in a bad way) EQ’s dwindling population. Could someone tell me how a person would even know about the game from the outside? When the game first started it was in print everywhere. It can still be in print by “kick backs or schmoozing “some of the Gaming publications. WoW does it…Sony’s new games do it. The classic games still can do it, also. This game has a lot to offer or it would have gone by the way-side long ago.
Adding Excitement and Adventure: Most zones have dead end caves, walls behind waterfalls, flat earth waters ending at zone lines. Long ago they add the zone Warrens. I found out about this zone by word of mouth and headed over to make my own discovery. There are enough dead ends that SoE can add a zone, do not tell anyone except that new zone added in log on. Let the server population discover it, spread the rumor but making the old zone become adventurous again, make it worth a old players time to go back and explore some of these old zones. Make some cool drops only available until the next patch. Make the Attuneable or no drop items offer able to tribute. That way all my efforts to get an item use it, out grow it not in vain. At least it would not hurt so bad to destroy the item. SoE should have more GM events. To be honest all I play is on Zek so they may have a monthly GM event on other servers. But I have not heard of any. But when there is a GM event on Zek, word spreads fast and the zone is flooded. And of coarse PKing is ramped as it should be on this server. But it is fun and it something different than leveling or pking, waiting for raid to get together or beg for a group. What would be even more fun would be for them to make a mob. This mob or army taking over and destroying the other npc and players in the zone and if not stopped in time rendering access to the zone closed for a certain amount of time. For a week or between patches. In Sales anytime the public can’t have what they could of makes them want it more. Would work for a virtual game also. People want what they can’t have. Or want what only a few can.
Beside advertising and promoting for the new player, I have an idea to get the younger players in. People who know me know me by my toon “Armourcarr” a bazaar merchant.
Everquest’s trade and market mirrors a real world economy. But more Free. There is price fixing if you can get others to cooperate, low balling, price gouging and monopolies. This would be a great economic tool and model for students. Make the Bazaar zone shared by all servers, except for Firiona Vie’s (even no drop can be purchased there). I would realize that this would cut into item transfers but would not cut into character transfer. Probably would increase transfers because of friendships made in the Bazaar. When a player would zone out of the Bazaar he would enter his own server. Than create just a disk to be given to high school economic departments that would only be the Bazaar Zone, with language filters and rules. But team in class would be able to purchase, trade, employee and learn general economics. It is possible Armourcarr started by buying low items, and ground spawns and is worth over 30 mil. in plat and items now. But would expose a lot more youth to the game and even if you would get a small percentage to continue to play the game at home, is more than what we are getting now. And it also would make some of the youth think instead of learning a game with finger and joystick movements.
SoE can give incentives for players to bring in new players without giving away monies or free time. Just like real life I play to have the better toys. So give a port potion, clicky cape or something little but an incentive.
I will take a little more effort on their part and more on the players part but I think some of these and other players suggestion should be considered. But an happy player would make us excited to talk about the game again and spread the word that EVERQUEST is the greatest game created and it is growing strong.

oh yes RK , new players are usually welcome with open arms... spending most of my time in the trial answering questions actually... but the issue remains... SoE should at least throw out a Cresent Reach trial for the newbies/returnees so they get a feel for the game as it is *now*.

Vinnie you have some excellent suggestions. Here is the real question, as I see it. Do you really want to see marketing changes? I respectfully suggest that you and everyone else who has criticisms and/or suggestions of how to improve the game get in touch with SOE directly. They have a marketing department. They read their email. Nothing ever changes if no one ever tries. Who knows, maybe they think everyone is happy. Use your power to have your voice heard.

Just my .02, but something I believe strongly in. I've not written to companies frequently, but on the occasions where I feel impassioned to communicate something to someone, I have been pleasantly surprised by how often I get a response. It may just be a form letter, but you'll have started a dialog, you'll have someone's name, and you can choose to nudge them as often as you like.

RenaissanceKat, I have written SoE many times. My contention is that they do the minimal for the continuation of the game. But little more than what is necessary to keep players thinking that they are important. Example: when they gave 4 trips away to the SOE convention in Las Vegas this year…how come no one from any of the EQ1 servers won, one of the four trips? I feel us long time EQ1 players are the poor step children of the SoE’s game reputes. It is a great game and it takes a lot of resources to keep it going. But I feel with just a small effort from their marketing department the game could be number one again, with a flourishing population.
Anyone from Zek will testify that I am not one player just to sit around and not act. I am glad you like some of my ideas. And I will write SoE again and again.
RenaissanceKat have fun and safe travels and if you are ever on Zek come check out Armourcarr’s wears.

Shadowrelm, I believe the game can have both. But right now SoE has nothing to attract the impulses player. Even if it is for a short time the potential “New Player” doesn’t even know the game exists. The true die-hard player is to busy playing to have any real life non player friends to spread the word. But SoE can make the newer player or lower levels, old zones and less grouping attractive also. I feel the interaction between players, adventure and graphic content; story-line and just regular game play if far superior to other games. SoE has to market it though. Example: I found the link by accident, Online Gaming Radio , but it would not take anyone employed by them to link it to all sorts of sites including their own. Some of the other things, yesterday I had a problem tried to chat with customer service, waited an hour with just me next in line, so while still up on screen, tried to phone with being put on hold by automation with long distance charges, finally was doing something around the office and screen went to screensaver and missed the tell back to me. But their new customer service sucks. Yes, I emailed them about yesterday too. SoE NEEDS to pay attention to their customers Not spend a fortune on advertising but just any effort would be great. I have seen none lately. By going to one expansion a year (witch I doubt) even puts the game further on the back burner. They need to wake up or we the players are going to lose. We will not be able to find the same quality of game.
I have not seen any article in any gaming magazine talking about ” Secrets of Faydwer ” I even had problems trying to download it from Sony’s site. This was the reason why I was talking with them yesterday. They do not try anymore, and all indications are that they are making it scarcer. What they are doing does not work they can not leave it as status quo. How about lowering the subscription price lower than wow and move people over just for economic reasons.
How many new players game aboard because of the new card game? I believe it even lowered the population of active players because now they are safe in PoK, and AFK playing the card game. Could have directed all that effort to promotion of the game as is.

Shadowrelm, one thing I disagree with you. You feel SOE would be flushing their money down the toilet if they promote EQ1 the way it is now. I Feel Sony's direction with money being spent on their other great ideas is like the toilet use at half time during the super, world championship, bowl (don't want copy right infringements. EverQuest, a proven success, would be a small drip on a faucet, Compared to the monies directed on Blu-ray, Eq2, Legends of Norratha and other off the wall games & investments. They need to sit down, out of the coffee-break cafeteria and actually get their crap together. Sorry for the rant but EQ has been a big part and enjoyment of my life and I hate to see it go because of apathy by the producers.

How could you possibly know how much SOE is making off of EQ and/or how much it costs to maintain the game and creat new content.

Quote:
they walked away because they found something more entertaining. and their wasnt a flood of new players comming in to replace them, not because they didnt know about EQ1, im sure those 400,000 people that walked away told atelast 2 people each, but because the games on the market now are more appealing to them.
Once again, how do you know this?

I have not seen anything regarding the solo player in this new expansion… or for the low level starter beginning the game. This expansion is off a newbie zone? And if the rumor is true, that there will be only on expansion a year? It looks like it is going to be a difficult year for me only being able to complain once a year. I do not having that much time to group or raid but want to take a little advantage of my $39, I don’t see how?
Close to the same subject, during the Veteran’s holiday weekend on Saturday evening (6pm pacific) on Server Zek there were only 43 vendors, (good for me but bad for game) and only one general chat up with 187 players showing logged on to it. If you take in account that the 43 players also were on general chat, the amount of multi boxers on the server, the player’s afk playing the new exciting (remove players from game) card game, and the few lame afk players blocking the bank to PoK… Does not leave to many active players taking part in the 100+ zones…I wish my real life city had that much space available.(LOL). I think a good poll for Allakhazam would be when you log on which chats do you have assigned to automatically open when you log on? Click the ones you use? 1) General 2) class 3) New Player 4) Area zones 4) Private (special). My guess is that the amount of people on General is close to the population logged on at the time? This information would be interesting for me as a player and I would assume it would be interesting (but they probably have this info) for SoE. I am in favor of the status quo on the game, but also feel that this is not going to be successful or profitable for Sony or stop the players from going away from game and or increasing the population. They need to do more.

Thanks for letting me rag on them again,

You favorite neighborhood Trader Man, Armourcarr

There is relatively little in the expansion for people under 70, I can see not buying it pretty easily if I was a sub-70 soloer. for 70+ soloers, there are a number of exquisite kite spots.

From this point on, it is going to be one expansion a year.
Quote:

No, it's not. I do not use general chat, and play nightly with 50+ people who also do not. A vast majority of upper end people very rarely join it. It's also capped at 200.

As a general rule, just ignore shadowrelm.

all i was saying is that if soe is gonna bother to have a free trial out there it should at least be up to date because there are a lot of people tiring of the *new* games that came and a lot of old schoolers who would like to check out how things have changed --- first hand not by reading about it...
i just feel that soe may be missing out on a lot of potential new and returning players due to this outdated trail.
i agree that i should voice my oppinion where someone who could do something about could see it but quite frankly the soe website is a horror lol
if anyone here has a link to where such a post should go or to whom it should be sent i would gladly do so.
peace (please =)
