TV watching vs GamingFollow

This thread is a spin off from another thread on a different subject but I am curious.

Why do so many people feel it is just fine to watch 4 hrs of soap operas but not ok to play an on-line game for 4 hrs? TV is - sit and watch...Gaming is sit, think, plan, enteract, process, team work, social and a lot more.

Why is it ok to sit and read a book for 4 or 5 hours but not ok to play an on-line game for 4 or 5 hours?

Why is it ok to sit and sew or crochett or knit or work cross words or for that matter sit at work and create ledgers/letters/presentation for 8 hours?? But not ok to play and on-line game for 8 hours without someone saying it is a waste of time and harmful to your health??

Why is gaming such a taboo event??

And why does everyone that does not game think that those of us that do must be losers, over weight, have no life, must smoke pot, are not going anywhere kids wasting their life away??

It is a curious place to be in. I love gaming when I have the time. I have a very busy life, family, grandkids, full time job, house to keep, hobbies I enjoy, love to read BUT I also love gaming. Why is it that when I add that I enjoy gaming that puts me in a "less than" catagory???

I watch 2 hours of TV on most weeks.

At my job I do a mix of office work and walking and lifting so I do not have issues with being active.

For my free time 2/3 of it is playing EQ and 1/3 is playing guitar.

I get my exersize at work and my mental exersize at home.

Why is gaming taboo? I think it come from the mental pic or people who play console games that started when the nintendo was new.

Personally I dont care what others think of my lifestyle. I worry about waht I think about my lifestyle.

I wonder if the people that were alive when radio had just became popular thought that the people that enjoyed sitting and listening to their fav programs were unhealthy and should spend their time better?

And again when TV watching became popular if the radio listeners thought the TV watchers were unhealthy?

lol just wondering

And I don't worry too much about what others think of my life style but there are some that are fast to judge and comment. I do care when someone feels I have been unfair, greedy, hurtful or selfish...that bothers me. But then again, you can't control what others think or feel either.

Yeah, 'couch potato' was coined because people were sitting around watching too much tv...presumably.

But it has become much more acceptable to spend, say, most of your evening watching tv.

Since I started playing games on computers and/or consoles, I watch very little tv. I find it boring for the most part. Occasionally we'll watch a movie and I usually watch tv while folding clothes.

My routine, on most evenings (since both my kids have grown-up) consists of coming home from work, doing chores, having dinner with the hubby, cleaning up and/or going for a walk. Then, it'll be about 8ish and we'll typically both sit down to play EQ together for a half hour to an hour. My husband goes of to bed around 9-9:30. So, I'll usually take a break a short break from the computer, see him off to bed, then sit down and play EQ for another hour or two. (unless we're raiding - raids start at 8:30pm my time)

Weekends are touch and go. I do try and get on to EQ for Sunday afternoon raids, but don't always make it....specially in the summer.

I certainly have had rainy or otherwise completely uneventful weekend days where I've spent most of the day on the computer. My limiting factor is simply sitting too long. As I've gotten older, I stiffen up quicker..Smiley: tongue

I don't think it's gaming so much as the 'evercrack' hype that was once prevalent as well as the stories you still hear about people completely giving up on real life and flaking out, that has brought about the taboo... but they are just that - stories.

Don't worry about shadowrealms posts...he's 'default' for a reason.

I completely agree with the TV vs gaming argument. Neither is productive, it's just entertainment. One of my former gaming buddies' wife used to complain to him all the time that he spent all his time in the evening after work gaming and not spending time with her. Now that he doesn't game anymore, they spend their evenings watching stupid reality TV programs. And it's not like they talk to each other during it.

Myself, my room-mate hated EQ and how much time I spent on it. Prior to EQ we would spend our time gaming on a console game, such as Resident Evil or something. Most of the games weren't even multi-player, so one would be playing with everyone else watching. That's actually one of the reasons I started playing EQ actually, I got sick of just watching a video game and rarely being able to play it.

It's all entertainment time, none is any better than another.

Shadow is a tool, possibly bigger than the ones that originally started the guild drama you mentioned in your first thread. I'd jump on him in those posts but he seems to be ok with gamers that are in the military. /shrug I guess it's ok for me to waste my time playing eq, just not for you. At any rate I see the point you are making about watching TV and I agree, working nights there really is little but garbage on and TV in general is no bigger waste of time than playing a game, but everyone grew up with a family that spent all night watching tv, so that's ok. Spend your time as you'd like, set your filters on alla to ignore default posts, and I'd probably bail on that guild from your first discussion.

There are a million habits and hobbies a person can have that is "bad" or a "waste" I hardly think gaming is anywhere near the top for the average gamer or even many of the hardcore.

Yeah there are always people who take it too far (such as the ones in the news dying of exhaustion) but that is issue with people in general, no matter what they enjoy. Its hardly limited to only gaming.

The fact is if you are doing something that allows you to have fun and enjoy yourself in your free time, and not bothering anyone else in the process, then your time is being put to perfect use.

We all have our opinions on what is and is not enjoyable and worthwhile in life, only a fool believes their opinion applies to everyone else.

Well, I guess the old saying "one mans trash is another mans treasure" can be said for gaming. Some hate it some love it.

ANYTHING taken to extreme can be unhealthy.
Fire is wonderful until it burns down your house.
Water maintains life until it washes away your family.
Eating keeps you alive until you continually overeat yourself into obesity.
Staying slim is good for you unless you starve yourself to death.

So the lesson of the day is "do things in moderation grasshopper."

I know I'm sort of a stranger to these boards. Actually I have been posting - very occssionally - for about 8 yers.

Jarez, I avoided responding to the previous thread because I don't get involved in stgand-offs like that. I did read the entire thread and understand where you are coming from.

As far as playing for a 12 hour stretch - hey if you are enjoying yourself - go for it. My wife and I play about 3 hours every night and on some Saturdays might very well put in 12 ours if we feel like it. I am a Dentist, She is an insurance clims manager and we use EQ for our stress relief. We also travel a good bit, ballroom dance, and untill recently flew the hot air balloon that you see as my avatar.

We NEVER watch TV, as in our opinion, there is nothing worth watching on the boob tube. Too much trash and violance.

Incidentally, I grew up in the age of radio - yep, I am "that" old - and what we did every night was lie on the floor, listen to the radio for about 3 hours a night, and then go to bed. Hmm, gameng seems about the same. You had to use your imagination to really follow radio program. And you must use your brains
and wits to play EQ.

As far as it being unhealthy, that's bunk. As we ge we need to continuously use our brains as much as possible to avoid the deterioraton of our mental faculities.

In other words, go for it and don't listen to folks who have nothing else to do but lurk on forums and attack other folks. And have no idea what they are talking about. It's not worth the intestinal lining or the increased blood pressure.

As far as the guild situation, my wife and I just left a guild for similar reasons. Too much demand of how we chose to play the game. No hard feelings though, we were not a good fit for that guild and we remain friends with most of the folks we met there.

In final analysis - Play the game, be safe in the game, and have fun.

Thanks all for the input! The good the bad and the ugly lol.

I will continue to play the way I have always played but was just curious to see what others thought.

I agree, TV is not what I enjoy doing these days. I really don't want to watch commercials, kids making fools out of their parents, husband making fools out of their wives and visa versa, reality TV that is not real, and so on.

I appreciate the thought and time each of you put into your posts.
