wow, couldn't have said it better myself. I have five years under my tunic and, being a cleric, am partial to kunark. I have to agree that after pop it became more like a rat race. In the old worlds is where you will still find me. (maybe i am living in the past, but that's where i like it.)

I have a couple really close friends who haver played for years. I only started playing with the Anniversary edition, but what I found fascinated me. Yes, a great many zones were closed to me, as the requirements of having a raiding guild at my disposal were too much at the moment.

I voted Serpents Spine, because it brought back the group. Zones, missions, quests, items, rewards, and ADVENTURE for all levels. I think SOE hit it on the head with this expansion. Granted, I'm not speaking from an old-eq'r viewpoint (I was still playing tabletop and miniatures- the REAL old-school gaming), but fro what I've read, what I've seen, and what I've been told, I couldn't have joined at a better time.

And to solve the "problem" of not seeing old-world content, I simply created my OWN guild, to go through that very content, so all can see where great events took place.

I chose Kunark as my favorite expansion, my second choice would
have been of course Scars Of Velius, I really do not like Planes
Of Power due to the introduction of the zone Planes Of Knowledge
It' has left generaly all the zones of Everquest with exception
to the Hot Zones empty, no one uses the cities anymore, it
took the whole game in a direction no I hope not inteded by the
original designers.

occasionally, when on quests, i like to challenge myself and see if i can get where i need to go without using PoK, or even the nexus for that matter. It's amazing how much you can forget how to get somewhere the old fashioned way. =p But it's great to go back and adventure thru those zones.

For those of us who are old school and started playing in the very beginning, Kunark was just amazing at the time. It still ranks as my favorite. PoP kind of ruined the game for me because of the manpower required to progress. Without an intense raiding guild, getting together 50 to 70 toons at the same time in a coordinated fashion, then spending 45 minutes buffing and preparing for a very small number of armor drops at the end, just made it unpleasant work. The fun was sucked right out of it. Back flagging is easy now with the current inflation of levels and gear with a much smaller number of peeps but why bother. TSS is the best of the new world expansions. Natimbi, Barindu and all the rest of those zones with that expansion = worthless if it weren't for the miserable fact that epic progression was worked into those zones.

Wow. I just read Vesanus Scholar's post below. He hit it exactly. All those little agonizing but rewarding things about the game when it was new are so true. The game has lost whatever that thing was that made it special. I remember my first death, killed by an orc pawn outside the gates of Freeport, and thinking these mobs are tough. How little we knew the world then. I loved the sound when I cast those first spells. I was a human necro, unloved by everyone. It was heaven. To collect enough copper and silver to get my first gold piece, fantastic. The bazaar outside the bank in Freeport (Veeshan server) was chaotic but satisfying in a way the current bazaar with trader bots never will be. You actually had to speak to people. Crafted armor was excellent, cobalt to die for. If SOE could find someway to capture that experience again and actually advertize, they would again have the most popular, massive RPG out there. Death to plat farmers and ****-blocking raiding guilds. Vesanus, I thank you for making me think about those early days and how truly satisfying they were and reminding me why I still play. Patrizia Da'Siena, level 75 human necro.

I voted TBS because they Finally made it where a family style guild can group and get good gear to stay up with raiding guilds at least in gear flags are another issue but at least all have to faction and faction can be earned grouping as well as raiding.
one day they may decide that they want to apply to a raiding guild and at least they will have some gear to help them survive raids.

No expansion had the depth, the scope and the impact that Velious had. Like nowhere else in all Norath, what you did there had impact. All your actions...every kill...mattered, had import.

The storylines were amazing...the lore unmatched anywhere else in EQ...and the raid content was like nothing else before.

Besides, Velious included the two best zones in the game: ToV and Mischief!

There is only 1 expansion that has been able to satisfy every player from hard core raider to casual non guilded. LDON

Kunark without a doubt. Wonderfully complex with dungeons and lore. For all of the ungodly technical hassles (e.g. directX) that came with it for those who remember, it turned out to be well worth it.

I started playing just before PoP. I LOVED Kunark, great progression for leveling: FoB, Kurn's, LOIO, FM, OT, DL, then on to BW or whatever. I'm a longtime but casual player, and I thought PoP sucked, having to work so hard just to get into a zone, the progression was a pain. PLUS fighting your own gods was a huge mistake, lore-wise. Thus I really liked TSS, decent gear with no zone lockouts, I could keep up somewhat with the hardcore players w/o having to spend eight hours a day on the computer. TSS reminds me of Kunark.

The one i dont have to pay $200 for... i have payed for each expansion when it comes out and - the cost of the monthly cost for $15, now SOE want to start charging $40 per expansion.... you want me to pick a favorite one.... make the next one free.
#117 Oct 24 2007 at 6:47 AM Rating: Default
PoP for the zones and progression scripts, i mean show me another zone like PoTime and for gods sake the rathe council.

I voted shadows of luclin. It was the last expansion that maintained the old flavor evequest. IMO Planes of power destroyed everquest's soul. The game seemed so much more like a real world ( and a large world at that) before Sony ruined it by making traveling so damn easy. I thought Luclin was a perfect compromise for traveling between teleporting and non teleporting classes classes. Spire travel was much more convenient than taking boats to the different continents but it was less convenient than getting a teleport. Now with all the teleporting options available to anyone, I dont think any 2 zones are more than 2 zonings apart.

And don't even get me started on flagged zones! I loathe the entire concept with every fiber of my body. lol.

And yes in case your wondering what class I am - 75 druid.

I can say that having played since 2001, all of the expansions to date have held elements that made them unique, interesting, and fun. Each introduced new skills, races, spells, zones, and encounters that pushed EQ's member base to new heights and kept things fresh and fun.

Although I loved the progression in PoP, as a raider, GoD got my vote. It was the first expansion whose end zone really separated the skilled players from the fluff. At present, TSS has offered challenging end zones as well. But the factioning stinks :p

I voted for Kunark, and won't take back my vote, but going again, I'd have to say TSS really came awful freakin close. TSS has the faction/raiding/larger group aspect of velious, the raid encounters of beyond velious, a few instances for the guilds and groups. Gear and spells that help close gaps, but enough non-instanced content to feel like a world, stuff for all levels, quests for all levels, its just an overall good piece of work. There's still a lot of content in TSS that'll last through level 80 and 85 as rewarding content for a long time to come.

I voted for POP because without that, it would be very difficult to get around the world.

I remember learning the most important lesson of a "newbies" life was that "TRAIN" in ooc usually means "loading.... please wait" which put me into the category of people who say "what just happened"...

Later on I learned that saying things in different ways makes a big difference.. "my pet is loose" gets a different response than "if you dont snare my pet NOW, we all die". the little nuances (sp) make the game more fun.

Having 3 mobs under the MEZ and getting the message..."why didn't you get the other one" loading.... please wait.

OH and my favorite is when I hear...."MAKE ME A PUMPKIN"......

Doing my first KEI group was fun..

buying rockhopper hides/skins for 450p and then making somthing I could only sell for 5p if I was lucky.

Finding the meldstones in the bazaar for 200p and making the muramite combines but not knowing what to do with them.

All in all, it has been fun. I have enjoyed the time I have spent in EQ. This is due, in large part, to the folks I interract with during my gametime. Thank you all.
