Go to Crescent Reach and buy a Spell Research Kit from Researcher Layla, then find the researcher in Crescent Reach nearby that gives the quest to boost tradeskill for research. This quest will get you to about 54 skill.

Then get yourself a Concordance of Research by turning in a Greater Lightstone in Ro. Evil turn in <here> and good turn in <here>. This is used for research practice. Also turn in regular lightstones for the books with practice recipes.

Then get your class specific research book from either the quest in Gunthak <here> or buy from vendor in West Freeport, Abysmal Sea or Crescent Reach (another of the researchers there sells it).

There are also research books available at your hometown spell supply vendors, but they are for actual spell combines not practice. You don't need them anymore really since the newer books work too and have more slots.

Then just get the Concordance from Desert of Ro and the class specific book from Gunthak or Freeport as mentioned.

The Spell Research Kit is also sold by a DoDh vendor in Corathus I think, but there will be no starter quest to get your skill to 54 if you don't have Serpent's. That kit is for doing some combines in the high end DoD augment recipes and for researching level 61-65 spells I think.

For old world research there are basically two ways to do go (after you get your spell research container as mentioned in posts above).

First off though, spell research is limited to the arcane classes (wiz, nec, ench, mage). To make a spell in the beginning stages you need to combine 2 runes of a specific type or two pages of a specific type (depending on your class). As you get to higher levels you'll likely need three or more components.

You can use the actual rune/page that will yeild a spell on success, or you can make practice runes and combine these. Practice runes are made with various common drops from mobs appropriate to the skill level (ie..beginning practice combines will require drops from lowbie mobs). The actual runes/pages, however drop prettily readily in appropriate level zones...mostly dungeons.

I skilled up in research with the actual runes that I acquired or bought off merchants, and never made the research runes...it seemed like way more work.

I'd encourage you to read up at www.eqtraders.com It's an excellent site for any EQ tradeskilling.

you can buy the research books from your guild usually. the one for human necromancers, the book of dark bindings, comes from a vendor in the caves below freeport before they changes freeport.

necros dont get anything to practice with, but wizards do.

the formulas can be found on web sites. you will either combine words, for mages and necros, or runes for wizards and chanters to make spacific spells.

little hint. you can buy the spells at various vendors, many of the research only spells are now sold from velious and later expansions. for necromancers, shadowknight spells are just lower level necro spells, thus, you can buy all but 2 spells from shadowknight vendors. two pet spells and dead man floating.

what you cant buy, you can usually find for sell in the bazaar too from other players.

you dont need to do the light stone quest to get the book, but you can do it if you want. you can not get the necro research book from the quest however. it can only be bought from the vendor at your guild.

you can find alot of the words and runes you need in the bazaar. i hunted mine. treants in the karanas droped plenty of the level 20 to level 30 words. the ONLY place i found that droped the words for the level 49 necro pet was the allisaurius in ocean of tears before they changes that zone too. i dont even know if he is there anymore. lower guk and sol-a also is a good place. cazic thule USED to be a good place too before they changes it. i would assume the lizards they moved to outside of the dungons have the same loot tabes and may drop them.

little hint, you usually get 1 spell out of three attempts, so dont bank on just needing one set of the words unless your research skill is significantly higher than the trivial level for a particular spell. i had back packs in two accounts full of words i collected. they take up alot of room.

Actually the practice runes can be used by any of the spell research classes for skilling up. Here's a picture of just one.

For actual spell components (non-practice), however Wizards are the only that use runes, the others use words.

You quested the Concordance of Research and the two books with practice recipes?

That's where you start. Follow the recipes in the 2 books.

Since you have already gotten some very good advice on the subject, I'll just throw in a little tip.
Go over to EQ Traders and look at the list of reasearchable spells for your class. Write down the components needed for say..5-10 spells whose trivial levels are between 20-40 points higher than your current skill level. Keep updating the list as you progress in Researching.

1: Keep that list accesible while you are playing. Every time you go to the Bazaar run a quick look to see if those components are available at an afordable price. If so, go ahead and buy them and try the combine.

2: Go Dumpster Diving:
Take a look at the entire inventory of every merchant you go to. I can't count how many times I have found exspensive, or semi-rare words for my Necro, sitting on an NPC merchant at low cost because the folks who looted them had no need for them and simply sold them for the coin.

Good luck in your researching,
