Hi everyone. I started about three weeks ago or so. I was a HUGE EQ1 player from BETA until about 4 years after release. Playing a Druid was my best character (although I five boxed most of the time).
In EQ1 Charisma and Snare played factors UNTIL Dire Charm (AA Ability) came out. That was a permanent duration.
In EQ2 I've found that SNARING makes no difference due to SNARE wears off a heck of alot quicker than in the first one. With Charisma I'm not sure. I recently started playing EQ2 after YEARS of not playing EQ1 so I have ZERO contacts and ZERO worth while gear (Except for a quest I just finished yesterday Holy Symbol of Tunare).
Now, I began investing all of my points into the category to get Charm Animal. I have an 8/8 in that. The A Large Spitting Spider or something like that was orange and red to me in Steamfont. I was charming them and in the beginning the charm lasted for maybe two mobs... but soon it started lasting for almost the entire duration. The only gear I was putting on was resist and WISDOM/INTELLIGENCE gear.
IF the charm brakes during or outside of battle this is how I handle. You have three second to get to your hotkey bar or your book. If charming I usually use my book, I keep it on the ABILITIES page and just hit K if my screen blitzes (that's the signal). I hit 7 (it's my regen), then K, and with animal targeted hit Calm Animal. That buys me two casts of Charm Animal again.
Little insert here, I do agree with the Enchanters on this one, it seems the more you charm one animal the more resistant it becomes. One way I remedy this is park pet after two or three charms, walk a bit away, log out and log back in. It cleans the slate and the pet usually sits there for a few minutes before walking to head back to where it belongs.
Now... the ONLY problem I've encountered with this is as follows.
A Leopard is even or yellow to me, it's a hero with three arrows. I successfully charm it (remember that SOME animals are CALMABLE but NOT Charmable)and have it attack ANOTHER one a level lower, hero with three arrows.
Wouldn't you know it, the mob rips my pet a new A-hole and comes after me. For some reason a pet of greater status then another rampid mob MUST lose it's HERO status. If someone knows what's wrong with this OR if this is NOT supposed to happen, please let me know.
So, for all you charmers out there, keep your calm animal and charm animal handy in EQ2. No matter how tough you are, the mobs your charming get even more pissed off when charm brakes. Don't panic, just do what's natural as a Druid, control your situation. Regen yourself. That buys you enough time to cast the ever so quick calm animal.
Here's a bit of advice as well... if DURING battle your charm brakes and the mob your fighting is DEFINITELY going to interrupt you, regen yourself, root the mob you WERE killing and back up. This way your pet will follow you away so you can calm him and then re-charm.
SOMETIMES... the pet will brake charm BUT continue to attack the mob. Then you don't have to worry about calming or regen... save the mana. Instead root the mob you're fighting, back up and charm your pet again. Simple.
If anyone DOES know the answer about charming hero pets and why they get spanked, please let me know.
