EQ Lore Follow

#1 Jul 03 2007 at 10:04 AM Rating: Decent
I was google`ing EQ game lore and run accost this interview with Brad McQuaid about early EQ. It’s a quick read if you’re interested.

Desslock: What can you tell us about the history of Norrath, the world in which EverQuest is set?

Brad McQuaid: Norrath is a very large and diverse world, controlled by many different factions. Different races rule different regions, and some areas aren’t controlled by anyone. We’ve developed a rich and detailed history, including a chronology that spans several thousands years. It will be a lot of fun revealing all of this depth to the players through quests and other means.

Desslock: You have indicated that there will be twelve races that players can choose from in EverQuest. Tell us a bit about the different races in EverQuest. Will the races have a history of interacting with each other? Will certainly races have "evil" or "good" alignments?

Brad McQuaid: Evil and good are a bit more relative in EverQuest than in other games... for instance, I doubt the Dark Elves really feel they are evil, however the Wood Elves certainly view them that way. And there is indeed a history of races interacting with each other... wars, racial hatreds, and the like.

Desslock: Will non-player characters from the different races have "homelands" in the game, or will they be scattered throughout the gaming world in a big "melting pot"?

Brad McQuaid: You will definitely see different NPCs in different areas – we think this is more realistic than the "melting pot" approach, and also more fun in terms of exploration.

Desslock: You have indicated that religions will play a role in EverQuest. Will the religions be tied to particular races? Will there actually be "divine intervention" by the various deities?

Brad McQuaid: We’re not yet revealing too much detail behind how religion and alignments work in the game, but suffice it to say that there will definitely be "divine intervention". For instance, in terms of dynamic quests, this will often be done by a GM appearing as a deity or an agent of a deity.

Desslock: How big will the world of EverQuest be? You have indicated that there will be between 6-12 cities and over 20 "adventure zones" – how big will each zone be? Will each zone have a distinctive theme or setting or are you just using zones as a means to divide up the expansive gaming world?

Brad McQuaid: We’re making it as large as possible, and are very happy with the way the world is turning out. I’m a little hesitant to guesstimate at this point as to exactly how long it would take a person to travel from one end of the known world to the other – several hours at least… but then we haven’t finished building all of the world yet. One of several features that really sets EverQuest apart from the competition is that each and every zone, whether it be adventure, city, or outdoor, is being built from scratch. There are no tile sets, and no random generation of zones.
