1) You do realize that a survey done in this way has no academic or scientific merit what so ever?

2) You do realize that most gamers are tired of polls like this?

These polls make me feel like some kid from a really normal household with 1.8 kids, a dog and a white picket fence from the local high school walked into my AA meeting and said "Hey guys, sorry to bother you but I am writing an article for my school newspaper. How has alcohol affected your life?"

That should answer most if not all of your questions.

#7REDACTED, Posted: Jun 17 2007 at 8:35 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Say what you must. It's just a school project with a small sample of 30 people. I'm a gamer and I was interested in doing something besides a crappy project suggested in a stuffy textbook. I didn't mean to offend anyone.
#8REDACTED, Posted: Jun 17 2007 at 8:54 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'd also kind of like to say that I've played Everquest for 5 years now, World of Warcraft since Phase 3 beta. I really am not trying to offend anyone, obviously I really upset some of you. I was addicted to EQ for 2 very hardcore years. I'm a serious gamer who has tried really hard to discern between fun and addiction in the gaming community. I come to these boards with the upmost respect. It is a voluntary process to answer or not to answer. I just didn't want to do a project about the prices of milk in different Safeway stores.

You know milk and bread are located at the opposite end of the store from the entrance on purpose. It forces customers to pass by many other products thus expanding the potential that they will buy more than the gallon of milk and loaf of bread they originally came for.

Meh, what the heck, I'm feeling nice this morning...

1) What MMORPGs do you play or have played in the past?

Have only played and still play Everquest

2) About how many hours a week did you or do you play these games?

10-15 hours during a normal work week.

Something more like 30-40 if it's a week I'm on vacation from work.

3) How many hours of the week do you work/go to school or both?

60 hours minimum

4) Out of the hours you play a week in MMORPGs, how many would you consider fun?

All of them? Realistically, perhaps 90%

5) How many characters do you play in each game you play?

5, although My main character probably accounts for 95% of my play time easily. After that its just several neglected alts.

6) How many servers do you play on?

2, I have an alt on a different server that I spend a few hours playing about once a month.

7) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a negative way? (explain)

Not at all, it's a great way to pass a lot of incredibly dull free time considering I spend the vast majority of a year living in a hotel while traveling.

8) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a positive way? (explain)

It gives me something to do rather than stare at the TV all day like even more of a complete human vegetable, so I would say yes.

9) Would you consider yourself a hardcore or casual gamer?

Probably a hardcore gamer, at least during weeks when I have the time to spare

10) Do you prefer, regular, PvP or roleplay when gaming?

Regular

11) How many hours a week do you spend with family and friends out side of gaming?

When not on the road, at least 20

12) Do you game with friends that you've met outside of gaming, and or family members?

Yes

13) Do you think that gaming has adversely affected any of your previous real life relationships?

Not at all

Usually surveys that we are asked to participate in are done in some kind of a survey format so you can just easily click the little buttons (oh and it's !!ANONYMOUS!!). Also, it's good if you can provide some information about your project so people know it's legit.

Many students use Survey Monkey.

Despite the griefing, many of the posters here will go fill out the surveys when we get these requests. I'm not gonna fill this one out on this board, cus I don't want Saeel to know about my affair with Vanguard. Smiley: tongue (omg, did I just say that out loud?)

I have 4 "active" in LOTRO, before I left EQ I had 12 active toons there. I had 5 or 6 in WoW, 7 or 8 in DAoC and 3 or 4 in GW.

1) What MMORPGs do you play or have played in the past?

Ultima Online, Everquest, Everquest II, Worlds of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxy

2) About how many hours a week did you or do you play these games?

M-Th 5 hours per night = 20 hours
F 7 hours
S-S 12 hours per day = 24 hours
Total of 51 hours which I hit most weeks

3) How many hours of the week do you work/go to school or both?

Work was 40-50 hours per week

4) Out of the hours you play a week in MMORPGs, how many would you consider fun?

Of my 51 hours per week, I'd say 45 hours were fun. The other 6 un-fun hours were usually waiting for people to show up for a raid or just traveling around looking for something to do.

5) How many characters do you play in each game you play?

For Everquest, I would 6-box; therefore, I played 6 characters. In the other games I only played one character.

6) How many servers do you play on?

1

7) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a negative way? (explain)

Sort of. I think I was a little out of touch with some of the pop culture stuff that was out there because I didn't go out. I didn't know the cool hot spots around town, nor was I up on the local band scene. My moive knowledge sucked because I didn't care to go. My wardrobe was a little dated, but that is superficial anyway.

8) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a positive way? (explain)

Indirectly, yes it had a positive impact on my life. Where my friends were social and hit the bars constantly, they would drop $300-$500 a week at the bars. Since I was gaming, that $1,200 to $2,000 per month went a long way in paying off my debt, college loans, car payment, downpayment on a house, and paying cash for a sweet engagement ring.

9) Would you consider yourself a hardcore or casual gamer?

I was a hardcore raider back in the day, but now I am a casual player.

10) Do you prefer, regular, PvP or roleplay when gaming?

Player(s) vs. Environment (regular)

11) How many hours a week do you spend with family and friends out side of gaming?

It would vary from week to week. If something was going on that was worth doing, I'd go do it. For example, during softball season, I get out and play softball. If someone wanted to hit a Cubs game, off we'd go. If someone was having a party, I'd go. I wasn't chained to the computer.

12) Do you game with friends that you've met outside of gaming, and or family members?

Nope, none of them are into computer games.

13) Do you think that gaming has adversely affected any of your previous real life relationships?

With the exception of not being up on what's hot (see #7), no it didn't affect my real life relationships.

1) What MMORPGs do you play or have played in the past?
EQ now, but previously, AO, DAoC, EQ2, WOW and some MUDs in the days before Windows was invented

2) About how many hours a week did you or do you play these games?
In the past I played up to 60 hours in a week, nowadays it's probably an average of 6 per week. When my gf went to Vegas for 4 days recently I spiked up to 20 hours.

3) How many hours of the week do you work/go to school or both?
About 40-45 on average, depending on workloads or client visits

4) Out of the hours you play a week in MMORPGs, how many would you consider fun?
All of them nowadays, unless I am killing trivial stuff for faction (e.g. light blues in Nurga)

5) How many characters do you play in each game you play?
8 in EQ, only 1 or 2 in other games because I never played them more than a couple of months

6) How many servers do you play on?
2 in EQ, 1 in the past on other games

7) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a negative way? (explain)
For sure, when I was playing 50-60 hours a week I was a bit of a slob at home and not maintaining social contacts beyond work

8) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a positive way? (explain)
Yes, it's given me a great deal of pleasure, more so than other home leisure activities like TV or reading

9) Would you consider yourself a hardcore or casual gamer?
Hardcore in the sense that when I am not playing EQ I might be reading forums or looking up quest info, and I pay for 3 accounts, 2-boxing most of the time. Casual in that I don't raid, and despite having played EQ since Spring 1999 I have no PoP flags, no character over L66 and have practically no knowledge of content OoW/GoD and onwards other than a few soloable zones.

10) Do you prefer, regular, PvP or roleplay when gaming?
regular

11) How many hours a week do you spend with family and friends out side of gaming?
All my non-work time is with friends and family outside gaming.

12) Do you game with friends that you've met outside of gaming, and or family members?
Occasionally my girl friend plays EQ with me, but she doesn't enjoy it nearly so much.

13) Do you think that gaming has adversely affected any of your previous real life relationships?
The other way round. Maintaining real life relationships has adversely affected my gaming.

1) What MMORPGs do you play or have played in the past? only everquest on my own dollar. i played WOW, an i was like WOW this is easy. then my bud came in an asked me how i had a few platinum already. an i laughed at him.

2) About how many hours a week did you or do you play these games? i would play whenever possible. i would hangout w/ my buds only if they called me. an 1 of my good buds played. an had 2 comps. so id go an hangout w/ him. an id still b playing.... if i wasnt working... id catch 2 spawns of lodizal b4 going to bed. or id actually set an alarm just to kill em an keep his 24hour timer down.... weekly? 10-40+ hours. i have trouble sleeping too, an would just trance away.

3) How many hours of the week do you work/go to school or both? think i was waitering back then. so 20-39 hours weekly of work. no school, its for suckers.

4) Out of the hours you play a week in MMORPGs, how many would you consider fun? on a PVP server, theyre all fun... even if im getting my a$$ handed to me.

5) How many characters do you play in each game you play? 1 super retired druid, an 1 retired shaman. an id go killing on some low level alts when bored. so 2-5?

6) How many servers do you play on? 1... zek or bust.

7) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a negative way? (explain) no way what so ever. i actually had met a few peeps through gaming i never would've otherwise. had some girls in FL, an maine even try to get me to bang em after seeing some of my yahoo pics.

8) Do you think that gaming has affected your life in a positive way? (explain) see above.

9) Would you consider yourself a hardcore or casual gamer? in my day... easily spent a hardcore amount of time, in a casual way. i wouldnt apply to higher end guilds. cause i thought that the idea was friggin ridiculous. so i kept my gear kinda gimpish. but i wish i had spent more time keying, an questing now.

10) Do you prefer, regular, PvP or roleplay when gaming? PVP is the way to go. anything else is just gay.... i mean if your going to cast a spell with an area of effect. it should hit your buddies a$$ too if he's right next to you.

11) How many hours a week do you spend with family and friends out side of gaming? lol. i live w/ my parents. so i see em alot. but if u want a number. w/ friends 40ish?

12) Do you game with friends that you've met outside of gaming, and or family members? i got 1 buddy into it. an my pops would somehow be content watching me. but he lacked the manual dexterity it takes to play.

13) Do you think that gaming has adversely affected any of your previous real life relationships? ummmm. guys are hornballs, an girls are tramps. both lie, cheat, an deceive... so if anything id say it kept me from getting too caught up. i had a really hot girlfriend when i was playing at my peak. an her mom went nutz, prettymuch forced us apart. an then some old friend of mine tried to bang her. but she was too busy whoring herself out on myspace. so if anything, everquest mighta just saved 2 lives, or me from diggin 1 really deep hole... ohh yeah, an im supposed to add the " lol" so u think im kidding right?

14) additional thoughts.... everquest is cool. some people spend alot of time on it. an while outsiders would call it wasted time. id say its almost therapy. there are rewards, risks, an actual monetary system. an the seedy side of plaguers an the morons who painstakingly try the same thing over an over again, an expect a different result. the peeps at SOE ruined my time, when they merged all the pvp servers, an then crapped out a bunch of expansions for the higher end gamers. made it tough being a casual player with decent gear. to fight pvp against some cornball 2-5boxing, with out of range healers an stuff... but it was a lesson in human nature at the least. k, GL with your report.
