They do leach exp, afaik.
The do not leach from your regular or AA xp.
Think of the XP that an item gets as a seperate pool altogether but subject to the same rules as regular XP. The main difference is that it's not a variable number based on the level of the mob you kill, it's fixed.
For example(using made up numbers):
kill a level 60 mob and get 10,000 XP
kill a level 70 mob and get 50,000 XP
For evolving items you'll get 200 xp no matter the level of the mob and it might take 10,000 to change it's level.
I've verified this many times.
Solo killing light blue (maybe green now) mobs in PoI gave me 1% evolving xp every 3-4 kills. If I grouped with my boxed shammy I got 1% every 6-7 kills. In a full group in RSS resulted in WAY more regular XP but it took ~ 20 kills to get 1% on the evolving item.
So evolving item xp is divided between the group members evenly even if they don't have an evolving item.
Fastest way to level an item is to solo mass slaughter the lowest level mobs you can that still give the "you gain xp" message.
