This is a question that has been naggin me, but that I have never paid enough attention to in order to figure out completely:
When a group is putting the smack-down on a mob and said mob goes belly up, someone gets the emote "You have killed (unfortunate mob)" and others get the emote "Soandso has killed (unfortunate mob)." Has the person that gets the "kill shot" done the most overall damage to the critter, or are they simply the last person to smack the critter when it dies? I suspect that the case is the latter (i.e., the last smacker on the smackee), but am not completely sure. M'aidez. Thanks!

The one who damages the mob for the final hit point it has left gets the kill shot.
You may confuse this with the way experience is dealt; say you have two groups killing the same mob: the group that does the most overall damage gets the experience - regardless of who got the kill shot. This also goes for powerlevelling: as long as you Uber_Friend_01 only damages the mob down to 50.1% and you do the remaining damage to kill the mob, you get the xp. Mind you - YOU could do the first 51% and let your friend do the remaining 49, and you would STILL get the xp.

Just one small note to add to the % damage explanation. You % of damge is for damage done not damage taken. So if a low leel player does 70 hps damg to 100 hp mob and then a higher player kills it off with a 200 hp hit. The low elvel player would get no experience, as he only did 70 of the 270 of the damage to the mob.
But, a great way to think of PLing, is when you have a buddy, who is a cleric or druid, just throw up a DS on you, but they take a DS potion. The potion isn't a casted spell that the user puts onto themselves, and any damage done to the mob is no hits, so as long as you do 1pt of damage, you get the kill.

Actually, an even better way to Power level is to have your high level friend ds themself. Then have them gather up swarms of mobs and then you (the lower level) do at least 1 point of damage to each mob. Using this method, there is very low risk of getting aggro and you will be in your 60s in a day or 2 (depending on your friend's level). The ds on the lower level takes a lot longer because of the level restrictions placed on damage shields.

Does the DS that the high level player uses have to be a potion, or can they use their own DS spell? If only potions work for this kind of power leveling you would go through a lot of Skinspikes!
Doesn't have to be a potion, spells really work the best. Druid, mage, and SK can clear a zone in one pull 
Just make sure your PL-ee has done damage to all the mobs before you put on the 1k+DS and watch half the zone fall to your feet at the first cast. (take off weapon, ripostes are the suck)
Pet classes are really easy cause the pet will never draw agro and will always do at least 1 point of damage.
This way also works better than casting DS on the PL-ee because the high level, I don't know let's say 15k SK can take quite a bit more abuse than the 400 hp whatever you're trying to level.

This is not true, or clear, or I completely misunderstood it. I will rephrase in the best english I can summon.
Let's keep this simple in terms. There are two people involved in the powerleveling. One the uber level 75 whatever, "Powerleveler" and the level 1 noob, "Powerlevelee".
Regardless of who casts the DS it still doesn't count as someone did damage, the mob just takes damage. No matter what method of DS you use the powerlevelee just has to do one point of damage and the powerleveler can't do any. The powerleveler can spam short duration DS and crank out the 1k damage per swing DS no problem however.
What Srakeats said. All Damage Shields were created equal.
I like using classes that cannot riposte to PL. I get my Mage Tenacity and self buffs and cast Pyrilen Skin + regular DS + potions and it is a massacre.

I have Mage DS my Necromancer while Necro keeps rune up on herself. Necro has the advantage of Life Tapping one of the dozen mobs I bring as well if she needs to.
I brought a Wizard from level 1 to 53 in 21 hours played last week this way. I am not sure if 21 hours is super fast but in comaprison, it took my Necromancer almost a year to hit 50 back before Kunark so I am happy with my results.

If you kill a mob completey with a DS you will not get xp for it. (I think this is where Kupo was going).
Doesn't matter who puts the DS on a toon, but said toon needs to do some damage, whether it comes from melee or a spell, in order to get xp for the kill.
I've had it happen plenty of times while levelling toons with DS's. Get a couple mobs on ya, one dies from DS before you get to pounding on it...no xp.

Nice thing about bards is lowish level like bottom 5 levels they get an aoe damage song. Super easy to PL them using this method.
