Satellite Internet Weather problems?Follow

I read the message posted about satellite being adequate for EQ play but nobody said anything about weather affecting it. I am stuck with dial up and since i'm in a "RURAL" area DSL or cable is not an option. I have Satellite TV however and I can tell you that weather is definately a problem. Snow storms, Rain storms "lightining especially" do shut down the reception. I don't know if the internet signal is affected this way though and i don't know anyone that has satellite internet. Appreciate any feed back about real world conditions affecting gameplay.

Ok, i had sattelite internet from december 05 to february 07. I can say, it was an adjustment to actually start getting used to and playing it. The latency was a little adjustment, but i made due. Alot of times i would flip flop between the dial up and the sattelite. Personally the dial up was better, but would drop me far more often, the sattelite gave a "more stable" slightly more laggy game. But it wasnt that bad, on dial up i couldnt handle big raids, on sattelite it stayed the same regardless. Dial up was great in instances alone, but with more people sattelite proved superior. Now onto weather.... I also live in the middle of no where. Yet a few months ago, they were doing a trial test in my area, so they brought DSL in. But storms did prove to be a problem sometimes. Some nights, due to weather i would have no internet at all. If you have sattelite tv, think of it as that, if you dont have tv, you wont have internet. When you have tv, you still wont have internet. THe tv signal is alot stronger. When there was thick cloud cover i would lose the internet. Rain, or snow, i would lose it. Also in summer, you may lose it due to sun spots which mess up the signal too. Its not like it was down often, maybe once every 2 or three weeks the internet would be down due to some storm or something. Also.... ice...... Almost killed myself trying to get back into a raid, needless to say, climbing up the side of an icy house to scrape a dish..... lol..... When it starts into the snow seasons, with the freezing rain and such, it will blanket your dish in a sheet of snow or ice. You have to take that off to be able to play. But other than that, its better than dial up personally, but also about ten times the cost. Its really up to you, its playable, but i guarantee at one point or another, you will want to through the modem through the window, when its rains.

I think the one thing to be wary of is the fact that both Satellite and Dial-up have a variable quality to them that is different for each user. I've heard of rock solid satellite connections with minimal lagginess when playing games, and I've heard of horribly unplayable, easily interrupted satellite connections.

On the flip side, I've played EQ on a Dialup connection that could go days without dropping, but have a RL friend who EQs and is lucky to make it 2-3 hours without random disconnects that cause multiple linkdeaths at times.

If your dial-up connection is of the more solid variety I highly doubt you'd see anything but a decrease in dependability and playability (save a bit of zoning time) when switching to satellite.

I would say if you're willing to keep the dialup alongside trying the satellite internet, it would be at least advantageous for eliminating the terrible dial-up downloads.
