Installed it last night... 1st impressions.Follow

First thing that was wierd....it came with ( 2 ) Disk 3's. Why? I have no idea. Probably just a packaging error.

It took close to an hour to install all the disks and download the updates. Yikes... That was what I was dreading from the minute I opened the box about a week ago.... why not 1 DVD?

OK, trust me, I will give this a good effort..... :)

Wow.... I haven't seen graphics like that in eons! I usually say that graphics don't matter; it's all in the playability. But I was taken aback when the game actually started. Yikes, that was downright ugly! ;)

All I did so far was kill some guard in a jail. The interface needs some work... at least in the tutorial part. So many boxes, and so much reading.

It was kind of funny, though. I just started on the recommended server, as I figured that might have the highest number of Noobs... Like me! :) And, it appears I was correct. I kept seeing totally noob type questions being asked. Not that I could answer any.

My whole play time was about 15 minutes. I guess, now, thinking back, I can't give any real value to this post via 1st impressions. But I do say I will give this game at least 10 - 15 hours before I make a decision on whether I like it or not. I really want to like it because just based on this forum, it seems like people will be more helpful, and adult acting. As a 44 year old guy, let's just say that "XRoads chat" in WoW was mighty tiresome, and usually offensive.

I hope I grow to like it as I play more.

Thanks.

First of all, the graphics engine stretches back to nearly 10 years ago. Newer expansions have upgraded quite abit from the original and the tutorial will not give it justice from what has changed.

No matter how you slice it you will have alot of text at your disposal. Good thing is though you can make new windows and filter certain information into separate ones as well as not show some info and abbreviate other info.

As for the interface itself checkout www.eqgui.com for a plethora of complete different ui's as well as individual pieces. http://www.egras.net/egrasquest/ for a very sweet and pleasing one by a single author.

In my opinion, having been playing for so many years, 10-15 hours play time would hardly give you a decent impression. The tutorial alone might keep you there and that is hardly the magic many of us feel that keep us coming back day after day.

Good luck to you!

Just a note on UIs. In the tutorial, you have to have the default, it won't let you change it, while there, unless it's been changed recently. I haven't been in tutorial for 6+ months. But, there are a ton of UIs out there. Personally, I prefer the classic UI, one of which is available on eqinterface as default_old by Drakah. Of course, you may not like it, but again, they have more UIs there than you have probably have time to look at. :D

I also agree with Crowschaser, 10-15hrs is no where enough time to get a feel of the game. I know I spent close to a 100 or so, just exploring stuff when I first started and hardly leveled at all. A bad idea, looking back. I should of leveled to 20 or more first, then did the exploring, especially back then with the difficulty in traveling. I think I visited 7 zones before I was 5th level, and died a ton.

You won't need 100, but 10-15hrs definitely not enough. It's pretty easy to spend 6-8hrs or more in the tutorial doing quests and stuff.

Best of luck, and I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks folks.... Ok, so more than 10 - 15 hours.. no problem. I hate to commpare to WoW, as I was literally, and completely hooked in 2 hours. I'm an old guy, and married with young twins... I value pick up and play.

But I also figure that if this has been around 10 years, well that speaks highy of the game.

Much appreicate you ideas and words. Thank you.

I know what you meant when talking about all the text boxes at the start of the tutorial, I personally despise those...

...luckily that is the only time in the game you should ever be that bombarded with them.

some work? lol... a complete overhaul sounds more like it ;) the UI is one of the reasons, why EQ has such a steep learning curve. here you can Download custom ones btw - http://www.eqinterface.com/

EQ is great, as it is one of the most challenging MMORPG's out there... WOW? LOTRO? EQ2? graphics and UI are way better, sure. but the gameplay is less complex...

Papa...I just came back after a near two-year haitus. Yes...another WoW refugee. Anywho, I have to say that the tutorial is fun and all, but nothing compares to the stuff after.

You do have a pretty steep learning curve, but man, it's well worth the time.

Hope you enjoy and stick with us!

I am making a comeback from wow, and bringing my wife with me this time. As others have said you need to give this game some time. The starting area is just to get you adjusted to some of the things you will be doing alot in game (other then cursing at huge text boxes all the time)Its kinda nice, when I first started EQ you just got tossed into the game, didnt tell you what anything was or how it worked, had to learn how everything worked from people in game and websites, back then getting attacked by your starting city guard was like initiation.

There is so much content if you hit level cap and find a group of friends you could spend months just going thru the old content, wouldnt be of much use other then just messing around, learning the history/lore of EQ and getting gear that isnt anygood anymore, but isnt that the point of these games? Talk with people from all over the world while exploring a massive fantasy world.

All I can say for sure is wow IS fun for new people, It was awesome for a time, but my wife and I ran out of stuff to do, we went almost everywhere and saw almost everything. Raiding gets old after awhile as it become more a job then something to do for fun. We quit because we didnt like the people(normaly in EQ if you ask a newbie question you will get help, even if it is completly stupid question that everyone should know just from starting the game you will more then likly get a nice answer or two, none of that "STFU NOOB""CHECK THOTTBOT" stuff). We also ran out of content we could do with just us or a few friends, when you get to a point where the only thing you can do is farm for mats for raids and raid the game starts to not be any fun anymore, there is only so many laps around a bank I can do before I have to find a new game, or old in this case(I liked pvp in wow when I started but they just keep showing me they care nothing about balance, my first char to hit level cap was a lock so I know)

sorry for the poor spelling but its late and I am falling asleep

Welcome to the greatest game ever! It will take a bit to get the hang of it, but as the others have stated, once you do you'll have a great time. One thing to remember though, EQ is much more in-depth and time-consuming than WoW. Don't expect to complete most quests in less than an hour or get to max level in a week. This game is all about taking your time to smell the roses. Smiley: flowers

Welcome aboard!

As a starting toon, I would consider making a Drakkin, and staying in the TSS zones doing quests and such. The main reason I say this is because the starting city , Crescent reach, has the most worthwhile quest rewards for new players, out of all starting cities in the game at this time. You don't HAVE to be Drakkin to take advantage of these quests, but as a new player it's easier to have this as your original starting city than try to learn how to travel to get here at level 5-10.

Drakkin can be all but just a few of the classes, so it gives you a lot of room to figure out the right class for you, AND it has the benefit of giving you a bigger playground to learn in than the tutorial (with much better rewards too). You don't have to stay in the tutorial until level 10. Especially, if you were to make a Drakkin, because they get their first breath weapon at level 5. Although, I do recommend staying in the tutorial at least until your Kobold Charm is complete.

Check out the custom UI's, get yourself out of the tutorial (when you learn what you need to, of course), and get to Crescent reach would be my advice. 10-15 hours will probably get you your charm and out of the tutorial. I would say your "fun factor" will definitely go up from there. 10-15 hours doing newbie quests in Crescent Reach should be enough for you to decide how you like it.

Welcome to EQ. The player base is helpful and friendly, and you've already found yourself to one of the more reliable sources of information and community gathering for the game.

Enjoy

Just for the fun of it I started a new Beastlord character even though I already have an alt one that is lvl 66. I picked Iskar since they get the bonus to AC and the regen both with no exp penalty for their race now.

I spent a few hours never leaving the tutorial until lvl 11. Then headed off to each of the hot zones in sequence. It took about 5 days to get to lvl 45 where I semi retired him but it was fun revisiting all the hot zones that I had not been to in years.

So I would say about a week to get a feel for the game. You wont get to lvl 45 because that involves a lot of empty zones and somebody to heal you so you dont have down time resting, but by hanging around the youngster areas that ppl go to you will be able to get some groups. After you leave the tutorial at lvl 10 or 11, just do a
/who all 12 18
to see where ppl are at for levels 12 thru 18, and then just go there or send some tells asking if you can join them.

Hotzones are the debil! Best place to make and find groups, but man, the exp is so fast that level 50's are asking noob questions! I do like powerleveling my alts in them, tho ;)
