The Anniversary Edition has no manual to speak of. And I haven't even signed on th the game yet. So, if I wanted the most up to date player's guide, what would you tell me to buy?

Kinda useless buying a player's guide for an MMO, as the game is always changing. For using controls and such, there are some (I think) on the side bar of this site. You can also click on the EQ box in the bottom corner of your screen and click Help for a complete list of commands ingame.

Basics:

Arrow keys to move (at least with my laptop), the 'q' button is your auto-attack. Ctrl-X to exit. H or /h is hail. The tutorial should give you the basics, and if I missed anything, I'm sure people here will pick 'em up.

Enter the Tutorial, this will help you immensely, with the game.

Stay there until you are about level 10-12, make lots of rat steaks and do all the silk turn-ins for the armor.

Then concentrate on the better armor and weapon drops off the mobs, I enjoyed the whole thing even though I have several charactors 70+.

P.s. I have noticed a manual in my everquest folder in word format.

There should be a manual for each of the expansions in the EQ folder on your hard drive. As suggested above, learn the basics in the tutorial , have a look at the various guides on here, then get out into the wilds of Norath and explore.

There are several manuals that come with the game and are found in the main everquest directory (by default it is C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest if I recall correctly).

Darkhollow_Manual.pdf - For DoDh expansion
eqmanual_supplement.doc - Supplement to basic game
eqmanual_supplement.txt - Same as above in txt format
everquest_manual.txt - Basic manual
Gates_Manual.pdf - For GoD expansion
Omens_MANUAL.pdf - For OoW expansion
TSS_Manual.pdf - For TSS Expansion
The_Buried_Sea_Manual.pdf - For TBS Expansion

There's prob one for Prophecy of Ro (PoR) also, but I don't have that expansion yet.

As others have said, the tutorial is one of the quickest ways to learn the basics of the game. For play style, try a class-specific which are listed for each class in the sticky thread at the top of this forum for New / Returning Players. There is also good information in there. There is also some good information at caster's realm, and the links on the left under Guides, and Game Information.

For returning players, I often read the patch notes, which can be found at eqplayers.com -- That probably won't help anyone completely new to the game however.

Yther Ore.
