What's better to solo if you're just starting?Follow

Ok, so I've been doing some reading and see that a necro is good at soloing, but so is a mage, shaman, druid, and ranger from what people have been saying. This will be my first guy (in Everquest), which one would be the cheapest? Unless I'm wrong Im prob gunna be poor for a long time. thx.

Necro is easiest to solo with. Harder to play sometimes because spells take a while to cast, but easiest to play.

I think if your just starting a mage would probably be easiest to solo with. You can let the pet tank most of the time, were as a necro a little later in life you would have to kite. But Kupoback is right necro's are great solo'ers, but can be tricky to play too. Mage's for the most part you can send the pet in and then just nuke the mob. (Yes I know there is more to it then that but starting out that's the gist of it)

Shaman might be also be a choice earlier too, with their slow I was able to solo for quite a while. But that was also with some pretty decent gear because I had a higher level toon to farm things for him.

As for druids and rangers, I know they can solo but I don't know to what extent because I've never played either of them. But I know some of the posters have and will probably give you better insight on them.

Druids can solo fairly well into their 50's. After that their solo abilities fall off drastically. It can still be done all the way to level 75 but the efficiency is gone around 65 or so.

Rangers are not really effective soloers. At specific points they can be descent, but it's only short periods. Basically, soloing tactics are either kiting or root+shoot and both are way less effective than a Druid (who would root+dot instead of root+shoot). Alternatively, you can melee them, but other classes tend to be better at that also, Paladins in particular, with ok DPS, stuns to lower the mobs DPS, and way better heals than Rangers, plus they're a plate class, so much better mitigation.

Fear kiting animals is ok, but again druids can do it much better. Compared to some classes Rangers are better at soloing, but I would never consider them an effective solo class. Rogues can even be better with the use of poisons and intimidate on Fear kiting, due to increased Backstab DPS, 50% slow / 90% snare on poisons, and Intimidate works on any type of creature, not just animals.

Others may argue to the degree that Rangers can solo, but I doubt anyone would argue that the other classes you listed are not far superior to Rangers in their ability to solo.

Of course, with changes made to the game, any class can solo at lower levels fairly easily now.

Necro or Druid for cheap first solo class. Necro can probably solo tougher mobs but Druids can "quad-kite" in outdoor zones easier.

Snare makes a big difference. Both classes get a snare spell early on, and whether pet tanking with the necro or kiting with either class snare will come in handy.

When you say "which one would be cheapest?" I take that to mean you will be hunting practically naked for many levels. In this situation you want to avoid getting hit at all since without any armor you're the "fresh meat with a purdy mouth" for any creature that catches you.

Necro and druid both have heal capabilities, though necro ones are pretty weak. Druid have SoW at level 10, succor at 18 and group port spells once you get into the 20s. Necro get pets at level 1, Feign Death at 16 and good self mana regen buffs.

With low end or no gear you may not have a big enough mana pool to take down the tough mobs you hear about other people soloing. Kiting gives you a chance to regen mana during the fight; snare, run ahead, sit and meditate while mob catches up to you. Just play keep away until you have enough mana for another damage spell, but make sure you keep it snared.

Druids can buff and port for donations to make plat, necro can .. umm, practice Begging skill to get a few copper?

Anyway, Druid and Necro would be my recommendations for a fairly easy to learn decent solo class that can solo naked for many levels .. the catch is you'll have to make enough money to at least buy your spells as you level.

For making money, honestly all classes are practically equal before level 10 or so. Anyone can melee at these levels, your mana pool will not help you much since you'll be out after a few spells. The big money makers at this low level is the same for everyone, Spiderling Silks. Farm farm farm, then sell to other players. Any class can do that to make money as they level up.

Enjoy your upcoming adventures, and consider rolling a class not traditionally considered a solo class. Many people find the melee classes much more satisfying than finger wigglers, and don't let anyone tell you XX class can't solo. Every class can solo, some just take more brains or patience.

Necromancer.

Many classes can solo but the Necromancer class was created specifically for soloing.

Necromancer is also the cheapest. You have to buy all your spells but you do not need good gear to solo well.

I group sometimes but I never need a group.

Rangers are very decent soloers if played correct,yes mage,necro and some others are better and they have pets so to me they dont count, soloing is a Charector of 1.

Ranger class is a class of skill ,we are Jacks of all trades and master of none.

Solo tatics are Fear,Dot,bow kite next is Snare,Dot,Bow kite and Root,Dot and shoot heck outta mob,personally my favorite, I line up 4 or 5 in Black feather and Bow away, can solo Bears and wolves in Icefalls,I can go on but wont.

Im a 72 ranger( 280 AAs,I know its low I took bad advice ) on MS server and have soloed 80% my lvls so dont let anyone tell you rangers cant solo,we can and good 1s do with little trouble.

But will agree hands down,I have a 38 necro and he is a TOP Charector with his pet backing him up,so they have be close to the best,but everyone has a opinion and preference.

No, I would not agree with this list at all. Each of the classes mentioned can solo and at times in their progress they can solo very well, but if the question is "What's better to solo if you're just starting?"

The answer is Necro, Beastlord, Mage.

Each of these pretty much begin with the key abilities needed for easy soloing.

Good ability to kill things, good ability to get out of danger, some ability to heal/regen to reduce waiting times, the ability to function well in virtually any type of zone.

From level 1 to 75 a Necro is still the supreme soloer because they have the widest range of skills and abilities across all levels. Others such as the Shaman or Druid are more situatiional, if the conditions for them are perfect, they solo as well or better than a necro, but as soon as you move outside that particualr situation they come back to the pack.

Starting with nothing, Necromancer Beastlord and Magician are easiest. Necromancer pulls away from them at higher levels. And Necromancers can do it without using a pet at all.

My current favorite soloing grounds are the Vergalid Mines. Because of the tight spaces, I solo level 75+ mobs with root and no pet.

Gonna have to go with beastlord while necros are better in the end they require some skill where beastlords you can play drunk and half awake and still do well.

If your just starting, I would suggest a Mage as being the easiest to solo with. Simple tactics- just send the pet in to tank and nuke it. Later on in the game (60+ I would say) the necro is clearly the superior soloist.

If you have 2 PC's you could start off with a mage and then box it with a necro later, I do this all the time and personally I think mage is the best to box with a necro.

I would also second Mage or BL for a newbie, as both are easier to play. Necro, with all the short duration buffs and variety of spells can be very demanding, especially at lower levels (Necro is not easy to master imho). It always seemed to me, that I was at least 2 spellgems short ;)

and as to Mage vs. BL, well, the BL doesn't need to research spells like the mage has to - knowing this can be offset with buying those spells in baz.

all 3 classes are great farmers though, in order to supply money for your other chars :-D

I wouldn't focus on the ease or difficulty of a class. Really learning a technique for a particular class is not THAT much more difficult whether it's a mage or necro or whatever. The one exception may be a Bard as they're just oddballs.

As other's have mentioned, don't overlook Beastlords for soloability.

I would make a statement that Necro's, Mages, BL's and Druids are probably the best soloers for standard playing techniques. However, that said, if you like to push the limits, and try some non-traditional methods, you can solo most any class successfully, at least up into the 50's. Monks, SK's, Enchanters, and others all have some fun tricks in their bag for making the mob dead.

The bottum line as always: Play what you find appealing, suitable and fun for you.

As a necro , I find it funny when people compare us to a mage, beastlord or any other class at all, when it comes to soloing. Whether high lvl or low lvl nothing compare's to a necro.

If I were starting today to make a soloing character, I would make a Wizard.

At least until they nerf OOC regen.

Edit: I realize I reduced my sig to not list my EQ characters.. but I retired a year ago with a 70/983 Necromancer, 70/4xx Enchanter, 70/4xx Cleric, 70/2xx Mage and a 37 Wizard Twink.

I just came back to EQ from a lengthy break. I started a new character on a new server to make it fresh for me.

I chose druid for soloing because groups can be a pain at certain level ranges (my experience from a few years ago). Being able to heal, port and cast spirit of wolf (to run faster) were the winning considerations. Root rotting is a basic tactic to xp but you can develop many more (i.e., kiting). But... I also really enjoy the level 50ish game and plan to do a lot of content there. If I was aiming to join a raid guild I probably would have gone different.

Necros are amazing (my brother used to play one and we duoed nearly all fights to get my chanter's epic 1.0). A good necro can solo tons but knows how to contribute to a group. Since you have mmorpg experience you will know if a pet class is for you. If you like pets and the concept of necro (kiting is important) it is a solid choice. For a true new gamer maybe not so much.

I basically soloed my old iksar beastlord to level 51 (then I quit eq) and it was a blast. I liked meleeing it up rather than watching my pet do all the work. Beastlord was pretty cheap for me but I didn't go high end. I wanted something new, otherwise I would have gone beastlord this time around too.

As far as money goes just grind the tutorial (especially the staff-wielding mobs) until you have a good load of cash. I came out of it with 40+ platinum (which compared to my level 10 characters in the pre-tutorial days is a fortune) and could have had much more but I was bored of being in there.

Oh, another thing... I remember a time when my ranger was in his mid-30s and all that would be in the looking for group channel (on my server) was rangers up to level 65. I loved that character but unless I took initiative and formed a group it was hopeless.

As far as soloing, my ranger had lousy gear into the 40s and was not efficient soloing compared to other classes I played. Other rangers would/could have better results. Not my recommendation for a brand new going to solo player.

Fellraider seeing how your NEW to the game. There are really only four choices. All classes can solo, with proper gear-clickies, player knowledge, money-potions, AA's. Your missing on all counts so.... And then some. Your not multi-boxing for example either.

1. Best choice hands down is the Necromancer
2. A distant second is Beastlord
3. A close 3rd is Druid
4A. More distant 4th is a Mage.
4B. Bard- Read below

Several more classes are fair-good at it depending on first paragraph availiblity. Bard is good soloer as well. But is one of hardest classes in the game to learn. And fizzles like crazy, until you get AA's/Gear/max skills, to bring that down. It can be a great feeling of accomplishment one day. And pure frustration the next.

For general soloing in any zone, against the majority of mobs, in the game these five classes will work for you, as you learn the game. There are a lot of quests now for getting equipment. Work on them, and your cost will drop even more.

For grouping purposes when you get one. The top four classes are not at the top of grouping "wish lists". However due to a lack of people in the L1-60 category. Most groups will take what they can get. And will take you. Bard is the exception. Most, if not all, will take you in a heartbeat.

Your question is which will be cheapest to solo.

Hands down for the fun factor I would say either druid, necro or beastlord. I personally say don't choose mage because the character is rather more one dimensional in terms of techniques and strategies, and has severe limitations out soloing as it is more vulnerable to multiple enemies at once than the other three classes.

But for 'cheapest' I suggest druid. Necros need bone chips to cast their pet spells, and they need to buy some of their spells from other players or research them, which can be expensive. Druids and beastlords don't have either of these drawbacks. Druids get to forage for food and drink, so this saves some money. Druids and beastlords get spirit of wolf, a run-faster spell, which the necro will probably need to buy in the form of potions at lower levels if he wants it.

I played necro and beastlord to 55 and druid to 66. Soloing for all three is alive and well at those levels and they are all fun to play. For your first character, I recommend druid, because of the fantastic utility that spirit of wolf and port spells will give you - a real chance to explore the world with a minimum of hassle. Plus the ability to track enemies is a great way to find the specific mobs you are looking for to fulfill your quests.

Take Ranger off that list; first puppet, and my highest puppet were both Rangers and I soloed a lot with them. However, it wasn't always easy and there are several classes that are much better at it.

I've had alts (puppets other than my main puppet) in the necro, mage, beastlord, and shaman classes, and would definitely say that the necro was the easiest, AND cheapest. Someone mentioned bone chips, but those are insanely easy to get while you hunt and shouldn't be considered an expense.

Mage was pretty cheap and easy too, because they can summon a lot of their own gear. I'm still going to have to stick with Necro.

Okay, here is my opinion on just starting out. Your question was ease of play in solo situations. The easiest to play when just starting out is a warrior, yet unless well geared, they have huge limitations for a novice. But, you would be able to get the gist of the game, the nuances of movement and conning and battle, etc. I would suggest, as you have the ability to create several toons, that you start with a warrior, just to get your feet wet.

After you learn a little bit, I would move onto a Beastlord. The spells don't cost that much, but they solo well at the lower levels and pretty well at the intermediate levels. You also learn both melee and spell casting skills. The pet is easier to control than others IMHO, and it tends to be fairly uber as it progresses.

After playing these for about a month, you will have heard about other classes and be better able to decide what YOU might find easier to solo with. When I first started, I did it that way. I watched and learned. I saw how other classes played, and found a couple which appealed to me more than the others.

Now, if I had a little experience in the game, I would start with a druid, just because they are easier to make money with, at least for me. They can forage Nodding Blue Lilies in the Dreadlands and those things go for 70p each on my server. A few hundred of those sure helps stock the alts.

ok, so my bud played a necro an he's retarded an he managed to do well. my 1st character was a druid. an i can't stress how easy it was to solo upto 65. an i friggin loved when it came to questing. cause of tracking. so i'd say do up the druid an learn your way around the game. u get SOW or spirit of the wolf so its friggin a huge benefit not needing to go beg for buffs. ports are handy but do druids still use em? they made it easy as pie to get from point A-B nowadays. an u can easily make some $ foraging. but out of all my toons i've played. i love shaman the most. mind u i never played a necro. cause my bud did. but if u happen to make a troll shaman an choose inny as a diety u will be gifted the ability to do the reagent symbol of inny quest. an this will allow you to snare aswell. so yeah... i'd say necro is the #1 solo'r but i dont like a casting class unable to buff. druid would be my advice to a noober. then tryout a melee or shaman/cleric... i swear if u wanna drink an play. a cleric is pretty dam easy too. i tried alot of guys, but didnt touch level 65+ with anyone besides my druid which bored me later on, an my shaman which i was out solo'n nameds. but if u make a druid, theres like 2 choices IMO. halfling for the tailoring bags. or dam, i forget the other tunare worshipper with the root necklace. but its some sorta elf. necro as far as i know doesnt matter what race u pick, but id say go gnome for the tinkering. k, thats my 2cents.

Uh, unfortunately, unless your in a guild (he says he is just starting) this is a reality. Tanks and Clerics are pretty much the only people who get P.U.G easily, with the population dwindling and most people boxing or grouping only in the guild. For a complete newb it can be hard.
