object of game?Follow

A couple friends and I recently started playing EQ. Its been a lot of fun but I have to admit I'm getting a little bored. It seems like we are missing something. We all started playing with the Titanium Edition and have leveled up and out of Gloomingdeep. We enjoy completeing quests and getting armor and various items (when the quests actually work). Lately it seems like we have spent more time just killing challenging mobs in order to level up.

My question is, what does it mean to "epic" in this game? To me this would mean that you accomplish certain tasks or criteria in order to advance to something new. Is epicing just advanceing levels?

Sorry for my ignorance but I'm a little confused as to what the object of this game is and how I am to know what to do. Does each expansion carry with it certain main tasks that need to be completed? If so, how can I find out which primary tasks need to be completed? Also how am I to know what expansion I am currently playing? I believe the Titanium Edition has 10 expansions in it.

I'm pretty sure we are missing something here. We are currently 12 lvl Cleric, 14 lvl Ranger, and 16 lvl Beastlord. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to EQ.

'Epic' refers to certain class-specific weapons you can win through a hard quest at lvl 51+. The epics were first introduced with the Kunark expansion, so most of not all the raiding required is in Kunark zones. Subsequently, epics 1.5, 2.0 and even 2.5 have been introduced, but don't worry about those until you are way further in your progress. Look up Swiftwind and Earthcaller under 'Item Lookup' in the left menu to see the ranger epic 1.0. About which expansion you are playing: since you don't have every expansion, there are certain zones you don't have access to - never mind that for now, you have 375+ zones to frolic about in, so you won't run out of places to go anytime soon, and many of the later expansion cater mostly to the 60+ crowd anyway.

And as for the object of the game... At your level, the object of the game is to explore the world. Check out the zone guide here, for example, and find every zone appropriate for your level and go there. See the world - kill a few mobs here and there to get a feel for how things work in different environments.

Later on, we can start talking about what you 'have' to do, and there are some things that have to be done for you to progress through the world; many of the expansions have a sort of in-built story arc, which requires you to do a series of tasks to win access to the end zone of each expansion (see the 'Guides' in the left menu). This is something you should start thinking about when you hit level 46; until then, I urge you to just have fun, meet people, join a guild, get in trouble, do a few LDoNs of each theme, and EXPLORE the world. Find your class forums (www.EQOutrider.com for rangers) and browse around.

Always check the spell lists here to make sure you have all the spells for your level. If you find you need money, kill spiderlings and sell the silk in the Bazaar.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. That's pretty helpful information.

We have been doing a lot of checking things out and learning as we go. When I purchased the game, there were no manuals included with it. That would have made things a little easier.

Also, what does the L in LDoN stand for?

I've seen a lot of Adventure merchants and I've read some posts that mention adventure points. Is this something that we should start doing or do we need to be high level to make use of these? To this point we have simply been completing armor quests and killing mobs for experience.

LDoN = Lost Dungeons of Norrath.

When you hit level 20 or so, you can start doing them. Briefly, they are private dungeons for groups of 3 to 6. You get certain tasks that require you to kill X monsters or collect X items from NPC at the LDoN camps.

You should try them and if they are relatively easy for you to complete successfully, save up adventure points to buy Augments for your gear.

There are also class spells available from certain LDoN merchants. So, make sure when you find out what camp your spell is in so you can get points torwards that spell.

OK, maybe you guys could recommend a game book that outlines a lot of this stuff. Since I purchased the Titanium Edition, it didn't come with the basic user guide. I think it would help out a lot if I had that. There are so many aspects to this game that I can't hardly expand in all the needed areas. Any ideas?

Check your EQ directory, there may be PDF manuals there.

There should be a manual in your game folder like Whitman said. Its pretty basic though, most people have to learn MMORPGs through trial and error, and word of mouth/messageboard:)

i have to admit, if i had bought 10 expansions at once and had never played before, i'd be pretty confused. Going step by step with each expansion probably wouldn't be possible now that the game has expanded so much, but it certainly is cheaper the way you're doing it. I found some very good info about each expansion at this link. If you click on the expansion names, you can even read about what zones are involved in each expansion. >< Good Luck!

The "point" to the game, asside from keeping SoE's cash flow positive, is to find stuff you and your friends like doing. Set short term and long term goals - or challenges - and see if you can do them.

This includes leveling, doing quests, learning how to raid - heck, learning how to play your character. There's a lot more to the game than hack n slash, nuke - heal me! You may want to make an alt for times when your friends aren't on and learn how to solo.

You may ultimately want to quest for killer items - like Journeyman boots, like Quillmane's Cloak, like your Epic Weapon. You may want to get into the game's tradeskilling (no! "friends don't let friends tradeskill" - and I'm forgetting who said that, hehe, sorry) - or get into making plat. There is no one game and no one objective.

Just have fun!
