Why does everyone think post POP sucks?Follow

#1 May 08 2007 at 5:32 AM Rating: Decent
Why do I keep reading about how much people hate Everquest post POP? I'm assuming this is the Planes of Power expansion and that it added too many "powerful"items and ruined the game balance. Is this correct?

I'm thinking of buying the Everquest Anniversary edition and giving the game a shot. Is it worth it? I like that EQ has so much content and options for players.

I don't hear that too often. Alot of people hated GoD because it was insanely difficult when it was released. Sure there are alot of powerful items out now but it has been years since PoP days. Go get your new bundle pack, and enjoy the biggest & best game out there : ) Welcome to EQ!

I'm seriously considering the game now. I played the escape from norrath part which was cool and all but it was so limited because of 10 levels..

Which servers at the moment are good for new people to join up? as in I won't be the only low level toon running around..

I think around PoP was when Verant, EQ's orginal dev's, sold the game to Sony. So, I suspect alot of it is just peoples attitudes towards the big-bad money grubbing company.

I do see a difference in the zones of the later expansions versus the earlier though. The multi-level cavernous dungeons of the earlier expansions gave way to instanced zones and missions (I think the monster missions were a real stain on the feel, the lore, and the immersion of EQ). You'll find little in the way of earlier Dungeons such as the Sols, the Guks, the Hole, not to mentions the awesome Kunark dungeons (Seb, Droga, Nurga, etc) in the later expansions.

That's not to say there aren't lots of good challenging zones post PoP. There are.

Are the servers fairly noob friendly?

On the most part EQ is noob friendly. If you grow a thick skin and are up front and honest when visitng new places or trying new things, most folks will try to help.

You will run into the occasional hard-core group that doesn't have time to explain things or the plain old jerk in the Plane of Knowledge (the central place where everyone hangs out), but for every one of those you'll see many more helpful folks and groups.

In general, we hear good things about the Stromm server and Combine server.

would joining one of the progression servers be a good idea since they're not that far in yet?

There are several other threads with similar content, i.e. what server to play on, coming back, new players.

Here's the stickied one:

Here's some of the newest ones:

There is alot info / links in just the first 2 pages of this forum, you might also find useful.

I hear there is alot of support on the progression server, but I have no personal experience with it. Most servers are descent at a minimum for helping people out, some are probably better than others. I used to play on Stromm somewhat and it was good back when I played. Tunare and Firiona Vie have both been excellent. Druzzil Ro is moderate, but I may rank it lower, just because it's my main server, and I spend almost no time playing with lower level people there.

Long time player who re-started on the Combine server, and I am very happy. Not only do I have toons that are 50+ but I finally got my wife to play and we have characters under 10. When we started them (2 weeks ago) their were 30+ people in the Tutorial. I see lots of folks looking to fill groups in the 20's and up all the time. Progression server is still good for starting.

Remember to have a thick skin when asking for help. There are the few idiots who always answer, "Type /q", to any question asked. Try to figure it out for yourself but don't worry there will be lots of people to help out.

Silly as it might sound, post PoP the game just blew its load regarding the game lore. You had this rich lore surrounding the game regarding the deities and the history and how the races formed and the dragons and giants and ancient empires... all of a sudden you were farming the gods of Norrath for gear and then some stupid story about inter-dimensional alien mercenaries or some such ****. It felt less like adventuring in Norrath and more about cranking out expansions and raid material.

They tried to get back to the swords & sorcery basics some with DoN and the later expansions but I didn't really care anymore at that point.

All sounds good. I'll likely order my copy soon. Is the bonus content from buying the boxed version available since I'll be buying all at once? I mean the free goodies and such that come with the expansions.

As far as I know, all of the freebies that come with expansions are only available to those who pre-order each of those expansions. Thus, the anniversary compilation will not have any such items, since all the current expansions that are available to order are already out and included with the compilation.

Most likely there will be an item offered to those who pre-order the next expansion due out in November.

Not only did the anniversary edition come with every freebie for each expansion it also comes with the Da Bashe shield from the Comp Gam MAg freebie.

You can claim each one on seperate toons, which is a big improvement over the last complilation version which only let you do all the freebies on the same toon.

You also get the freebie even if you already got it once before from registering a prior expansion, which mnakes sense since technically you are paying for the expansion twice if you registered it once before.

Awesome, I may have to get it, just for the freebies :) I just moved this toon from another account about 1.5yrs ago, so I didn't get any 'cept for the TSS one (the only one I pre-ordered so far).

Thanks for the info, Thrugby!

BTW, which compilation previously had freebies? The last compilation I had bought, was on the original account, when they had the Platinum edition (or something like that) after PoP came out. It didn't come with any that I remember.

So when I get the Anniversary edition I'll be getting a bunch of freebies?

I assume they're not transferable though.

Is it a good idea to wait to claim the freebies or are they not that amazing?

  • couple of 10K speed mounts,
  • a 25% wieght reduction bag.
  • 3 faction increasing items, ones a shield decent for low level

  • a sparkly thing - an item that sparkles effect when clicked otherwise useless

  • a item to hand in to gain a special race of shrouds enabled, Gargoyle I think
  • and an item to hand in to get 10 shot Complet Heal potion and a 10 shot complete mana restore potion. You can trade one for the other with same npc, so can end up with 2 CH potions or 2 CM pots if you prefer for your class

  • not sure if I missed any....

Think they can be claimed whenver you want, you will just get message when you login each toon listing what's available. I would definetly claim the bag and mounts with newer toons, also the shield. The sparkly thing is useless so might as give that to the new toon as well. The CH potions and non shield faction items are really only useful at high levels. Would be a wast to use a CH pot on a low level toon. The shroud is just a gimickly thing depends what you want to do wiht that toon.

Off topic but it needs to be clear. Creating history is a dangerous game.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Online_Entertainment

Everquest has been a Sony game since day 1. Sony is not the enemy. Besides, Verant became wholly owned by Sony before the first expansion, The Ruins of Kunark.

It is widely commented that The Scars of Velious was the most triumphant expansion to date so the "SOE killed Everquest" myth does not stand up well.

Now I simply need to decide which server I'm going to join.... Sleeper.. Combine... some other... Hmm... Maybe SONY will make a new server soon with no transfer characters. I've read around online that many many many people want this. Not exactly another progression server but a new one for all the newbies and people who want to start over again and not feel rushed or alone because of the super high level toons.
    #22 May 09 2007 at 1:41 PM Rating: Decent
As someone who's played EQ since day one I feel it's only gotten better since PoP. There's been a few missteps along the way but on the whole EQ has moved forward in a positive direction.

Before TSS I would have said Sony was making a mistake in focusing too much on the high level raiding playerbase and not enough on attracting and keeping new players. Now I would recommend any new or returning player create a character with Crescent Reach as their starting city and enjoy the new, kinder, gentler EQ that is much more quest and story driven then ever before, as well as being much more solo friendly in the process.

Who knows what might have happened had they gotten TSS on some store shelves and done a bit of advertising.

EQ's future survival may depend on the current players not only spreading the word but also taking the time to make new players feel welcome.

After the tutorial (until lvl 10 or so), Crescent Reach is absolutely the place to be. Loads of (fun) quests, newbie areas to hunt, everything a tradeskiller's heart desires, Blightfire Moors just next door (even more quests and mobs and drops and...)

Don't be afraid to ask questions, a lot of players will jump at the chance to help out a newbie, payback for any help they may have received along the way.
