Did everyone go play LoTRO?
Seems the last week has seen a dramatic drop in peoples playing EQ.
(They'll be back...they always come back)

Same thing happened when Vanguard was released a few months back. Now Vanguard is struggling and Everquest is still here.

Vanguard never really struck me as a competitor...
Lord of the Rings Online, however... I'm quite certain the EQ community will lose quite a few players to the game. However... it's going to be depressing to see how people butcher the LoTR universe (paraphrased from another post, but still true).

I think that LotRO will fail. It offers not many choices of class and race, magic is weak, and players have certain expectations, which are impossible to meet. My guess is that most will take a look, wander around Tolkiens world for a while and then give it up.

I think some will be back... I myself had a look around the Shire too. LOTRO is nice, but doesn't have the depth of EQ (yet?). EQ and AO are still the masters there me thinks...

Despite not having place names like The Shire, Brandywine River and the Barrow Downs, Norrath is every bit as Tolkienish as LoTR.

I noticed a small drop when Vanguard came out, but now that LoTRO is out there's a big drop in players. I'm hoping many will return, but I'm not so sure this time.

LOTRO can never replace EQ for me - nothing can. It popularized the genre and set the standard against which all others are still judged. Beyond that, it was my first real MMORPG and it was a good one to be my first thanks to the quality of players and the great community around it.
I stayed in EQ through EQ2, WOW, FFXI, and Vanguard, but LOTRO may be the one that draws me away and I don't even know why. EQ is much deeper than LOTRO and is much more challenging in many respects. For some reason I just have more fun lately in LOTRO. Maybe it's the quests, which all seem to be well thought-out, much more integrated into the game, and result in satisfying rewards. Or maybe it's a fad. I haven't cancelled my EQ account yet, but I have to say I haven't logged into EQ much lately.

I've been playing VG since release and am already bored of it. I've come back to EQ and have also noticed the dramatic drop in players. On Antonius Bayle, there was only 100 people in the bazaar (this was at about 4:00 in the afternoon) and prices had just about doubled. I felt a sense of loss here, as 3 monthes ago I remember seeing at least 200+

You must have come online after a patch/ crash because I never see the bazaar with less then 200 people on. And prices doubled seems a bit weird. I find a lot of prices have dropped drastically
One thing I have noticed since I got back is the server instability. It seems PoK, GL and other random zones crash on a regular basis.

Can't remember the item's name, but it was some item around 60/60 hp/mana with average ac and stats. Price= 8k. The only thing up cheaper than that was armour symbols.
Thinking about it, I may indeed have come on just after a patch... So maybe this is all paranoia :D
edit: and Raolan- I've noticed instances crashing alot in particular, took us 45 mins to get a raid a couple of days ago and the GH often gets stuck as well.

When Dark Age of Camelot came out I left EQ. It seemed 'better' at first because it was new and exploration was fun, but I eventually got bored with it and came back to EQ.
Ditto for Anarchy Online, for Everquest II, and for World of Warcraft.
In all cases these games took a couple of moths of my attention but ultimately I found them less satisfying than EQ and I came back to the game I prefer.
So I expect a lot of people will try LOTRO but then come back to EQ.

I was in Glooming Deep messing around on a twink, on the weekend, and there were 40+ happy peeps : ) Pretty high number, and most of them seemed to be new players. I expect that once peeps get bored of LOTR and come back 'home', plus the new players arriving, we will see a signifigant increase in player population.

I am one of those who has tried other games, specifically WoW and DAoC. While there were elements of each that I enjoyed, WoW's Auction House and DAoC's overall feel, I came back to EQ. For each thing I liked about one of the other games, and granted I really only spent a few hours (real time) on each, I found many more things that made me miss EQ. In fact, my short time on Wow, for some reason, made me give up on-line gaming entirely for a few months.
Anyway, I do tend to leave gaming for month on end only to return with a fresh outlook. I nearly always start completely over on a new server with zero plat and no twinking. This has given me a perspective on EQ that I would not get otherwise--that of a brand new player, albeit with a little headstart in knowledge.
I have found, on each server, folks who are helpful and kind. Sure, there are a butthead or ten out there, but as the population has diminished, they seem to have either gotten nicer or fewer in number. I have gotten more free temps, free V, free everything than I had in the old days. Maybe this is because 10 plat for a peridot is not such a big thing anymore, but to a fresh, untwinked and plat-poor toon who generally offers to donate between 20 plat (when new) and 50 plat when I have it, that free temp means the world.
Sure there are people on WoW and other games which might be just as nice, but I KNOW they exist on EQ. That is why I always keep coming back.

From what I gather in my reading/scanning of various forums, LOTR is a flash in the pan kind of experience. Can't hold a candle to the amount of content EQ has to offer. Once that fairly short journey ends, people will return home to EQ.
Vanguard (which I'm also a current sub) has the "potential" to become a true MMO wonder. But that will take time and more development, both of which I hope it's given.
VG has been touted as the "place" to go for those looking for a challenge after getting a bit weary of WoW and the like...while imo EQ should be THAT game. Especially with the release of the Anniversary edition.
Again, it seems (sadly) that SOE has not risen to the occasion and spent hardly any effort getting the word out to "new" perspective players. I was lucky enough to see something about it because I happened to be reading the official forums.
I've been fairly vocal on those boards and sent a mail to the new Producer with my thoughts as a "new" EQ player. Hopefully some of my observations will hit home heh Time will tell ;)
Anyway,
Just wanted to voice my thoughts and say "Hello" to the Community here! I love the site and the vast amount of information...which already has helped me a little less lost in this fantastically huge world :)
