There is official word from the Dev's that the next installment of EQ will be coming out in November... and every release thereafter will come in November as well. One expansion a year!! I think this is fantastic!!

We all know the expansions were coming out way to fast for most players. The fact you had to buy so many expansion scared off the new players. I 'hope' they decide to make every annual expansion act as a bundle pack. You buy the lastest expansion , you get EverQuest.. all of it! They should be available in store or online right from day one.

I think this new direction can only be a good thing, provided the expansions are very large and well thought out... and finished!! A year gives them tons of time to make quality stuff, and gives us time to explore and enjoy the content.

Check out the Producer's Letter thread on EQplayers.

It also gives a partial answer to the question

"When will EQ die"

Not before this November
or next November

because they are planning the next 2 expansions, one in each November

and not for 6 months after the second of the two expansions so that people can play the second of the two expansions...

So this is Sony's way of saying EQ will be around for a long time still :)
And Savinyatoo's marketing tool of making each expansion a bundle pack, and available on shelves world wide, would be a great way to rebuild the EQ player base.

Personally, I am very excited by this announcement. I have been lobbying for years for expansions to be released every 9-12 months instead of every 6 months.

As a bone to the raiding guilds, I hope they consider adding 1 or 2 free zones each year (say in May or so) that will help them maintain interest in the game. While I am not a raider, I do understand their importance to the EQ community (significant portion of subscriber fees, high end tradeable gear in the bazaar, etc). Adding a free zone for nonraiders would be ideal (Veksar was cool), but I won't hold my breath. Even revamping of some old zones (Sleepers Tomb?) would be fairly easy to do, and would add some more interest for those who fly through expansions.

I also like the idea of each expansion being a "bundle" of all expansions to help those new to the game.

Of course, then the cynic in me raises its ugly head, and fears this is just a way of them saying they are cutting the staff, and need to slow down expansions because of it.

I'm not ill-wishing but, if EQ becomes a burden, they'll just cut their losses on the expansion development.

This is a great step forward for EQ. I think the next step would be the inclusion of all the past expansions as stated above. The next would be using some time to revamp older zones.
The final thing would be to actually advertise EQ!!
