Unlike WoW, EQ zones have coordinates right off the bat, no need for third party software.
Except you have to understand the weird orientation of the scales.
Type '/loc' in game, and you'll get three figures; the Y-axis, the X-axis and the Z-axis.
Y is North-South. The HIGHER the number, the further SOUTH you are.
X is East-West, the higher the number, the further West you are.
Z is Up-Down. The higher the number, the higher UP you are. (SOE is messing with our heads...)
Most, but not all, zones have location (0, 0, Z) smack in the middle of the map.
Take a look at
EQAtlas and browse around. Sadly, it's not being updated, but you'll see the vast majority of pre-LDoN zones there, and you can familiarise yourself with the /loc system by printing out one of the maps and going there with your toon. Spend the 30 minutes, it's a skill that comes in handy. And be pleased you don't have to practice 'Sense Heading' to learn where North is - we had to learn that, back in the day.
That was the easy part. Remember above when I said no need for third party software? I lied a little.
Log out of EQ. Go to www.mapfiend.com. Find the 'download all maps' and get the whole package. Then unzip them into your maps folder in your EQ directory. Say 'Yes to ALL' when ZIP asks you if it's ok to overwrite the existing maps. Now launch EQ again. You now have all the maps at the tip of your finger. Iirc, Backspace is the default key to bring up the editable map. What you get from Mapfiend is the best rated map for each zone in the game.
And welcome to EQ, I hope and think you will find it to be somewhat more challenging and rewarding than WoW :-)
