I am in search of an opinion...
My older brother, who is in his 40's wants to try to play EQ. He and his friends are growing bored with playing D&D and are looking for someting new.
My brother is very computer literate and technical handy. What class should I recommend him to play first until he gets the swing of how the game works and such.? I dont want him to get a bad idea of the game either, so a class that wont turn him off to the game.
Also, what really good advice/opinions could I give to help decide to play and/or keep him playing..? I really want him to play. Besides my girlfriend and her half-brother (who currently lives 2k miles away) I dont know of anyone in my locale who plays EQ. It would be nice to know a few more, so I have someone to rant to besides the g/f, who usually tells me to shutup.

On a sidenote: Thanks for the help in here everyone. Almost everyday I check in here, I learn something new about EQ, and I guess thats not too bad. For the most part, EQ does have a good community of players, as everyone says. I have told my brother this and I just wanted to bring that up to you all. EQ rocks and so do the people that peruse this forum!

My advice would be don't give them too much free stuff right away. Let them lose epic battles with bear cubs while doing newbie armor quests so that they get an appreciation of the game. Otherwise it might seem too easy and not worth their time.

I agree, and also say if you can stomach it to make a newbie toon and play with them the old school way. My brother got me playing this game and did that and I think he had just as much fun as I did.
Let them pick whatever they want, and as someone else said, if you can, make a newbie toon and play with them. Do try to resist the temptation to twink/buff them - it's the glorious early days that get you hooked. Have them make a group of toons of the same race (any, except frog legs or asslings), let them gang up and get to work in Blackburrow, Everfrost, Qeynos Hills, the Karanas...
Keep them out of the Tutorial, spoonfeeding is no fun if you are over the age of 12.

well, my sissie started plaiyng two weeks ago... here is what I did.
1 - started with her on a server where I don't normally play (means, I have no cash/means to twink)
2 - recommended a solo toon - she picked a mage - so she can play, even when I am not there (less groupage issues)
3 - talk to her when we play via teamspeak/ventrilo/some other messenger, so she gets my drift
and the most fun was: went to Crushbone with her, and we started camping at the wall... now that was fun :-D

Agree with the rest. new toon for both, but also: do it the hard way. dont start using pok in the beginning. let him learn how to find places on EQ, then learn about pok.
I started with using only pok, and it took me a while to learn, in fact,i only started learning a lot, and well, when the combine server was up, and my guild there taught me the right way to play eq

When I started back in 2004, I picked a woof elf ranger. Tell him that it's alright to ask questions (also tell him that there some idiots in EQ land that will be jerks and call him n00b). Majority of people will be happy to help answer his questions.

Hmm good point made in this thread , one which I would like to echo...
As tempting as it will be to twink up your brother, and pl him up ... don't do it , or at least do it in slow little drabs of gear or pl sessions. I have seen it a few times .. new player comes to the game, and gets everything handed to him .. geared and lvled fast, and then they lose interest fast and quit.
As much as the lowbie times suck , they are the building blocks for eq love. It is the struggles and victory's of our lowbie days that got us hooked and made us love the game so much. Sure being higher lvl with nicer gear makes the game 'funner' in alot of ways ... but getting there without much effort only takes away from the whole experience.

I agree with everyone here Dont Twink, Do start a new toon to level with your brother , and spend as much time with him as you can Family is everything.....as to what kind of character i suggest a beastlord as they are one of the easiest classes to play for someone new to the game.
I disagree with everybody I guess.
I would start out everybody with one wpn and thats it for twinkage. Nothing amazing, keep it under 100p based on your server bazaar. If its a wpn that has a recommended lvl then thats ok also, its something to grow into.
This allows everyone to:
1. kill rats/bats/snakes, loot scraps, sell them to a vendor
2. Buy some vendor backpacks, loot more vendor junk and at lvl2-3 start looting bazaar tradeskill items.
3. buy a couple bazaar bags and put those spiderling silks and snake eggs and bone chips up for sale. Wait for a few to sell overnight.
4. enjoy the rewards of selling your little things by treating yourselves with a shield or helm or whatnot with your earned few pp buying from another person in bazaar.
5. hunt up more spiderlings and stuff usinging your trusty wpn and your new armor piece.
6. get lots of more vendor stuffs and a couple more vendor bags for the bazaar and see different stuff that you want to buy and make plans to save up for them.
7. show premium allakazams to them with searching the zones your mobs and loots for what is appropriate levels to you and what connects to where etc.
8. by now try out some different zones like field of bone or erudin (toxilla) forest.
9. take the time to go fishing. get a pole and some bait
NOW,
Having said this, I would give a second alternative, but maybe even better route:
1. Plan on staying in the newbie zone until lvl 10, never leaving for buffs or anything.
2. do several of the quests for armors and spells and stuff. Especially the baking quest where you stand there and ask for more ingredients and bake them in the oven. You get lots and lots of free long lasting food and you want to offer that extra side of tradeskilling to the new person even if they dont ever do any tradeskilling again.

I would agree that it would be best if you could start a new toon with your brother on a server you dont use. No twinkage! Create a dynamic duo thing.
A healer and a melee type so you can go and do anything. Beast and Shammy?
Druid and sk? Cleric and War? You can show him the ropes. I the idea of setting up vendor mode to sell silks, eggs and bonechips. You'll both earn your plat and i think he'll have a better appreciation for the game on a whole.

You agree with me.
That's what I do: one good weapon. I actually kept a few around that were low delay, higher damage and maybe a stat or two.
Although I admit.. if it's for me.. I also made a set of HP (or HP/Mana) jewelry.
I've had a few of my friends, including my sister, start to play everquest. Some of them decided it was not for them and some of them are hooked. I ususally sit down and explain to them my views and opinions on each class. I also pull up on this site as well as others the basis of each class.
Each class starts out basic and easy to learn. It is not till the later levels you achieve where you need to understand and comprehend your class. Plus for most people the class the start out with is not the class they prefer to play with. Hence being a guild leader on my server.
When I started to play this game, I was dating a guy who forced me to start out as a warrior. I did not like to play that. I wanted to cast and be flexible with what I wanted. He was playing a druid and I enjoyed how he could solo and group. So I made a druid and I love it to this day. I do play several classes. I enjoy all of them.
Just have your brother start off with a class he thinks he will enjoy and have him play that for about 30 levels and see where he still feels about it. Also help him out with some good starting gear. But do not power level. I feel that the game right now has a lot of easy twinking. Which I do not mind for other people. But for me personally, I like to have my character develop properly. But I always gear up my toons in the beginning.
