Recharging PotionsFollow

Does anyone remember when you could recharge multi-Dose potions by selling the to a merchant and buying them back for a reasonably increased price?

I found a 10 Dose Essence of Gnome which had only a few charges left. The merchant in Guild Hall paid me 600pp for it, and charged me 5k to buy it back.

However, there were no new charges on the potion. Did they remove the ability to recharge potions by this method? Are there any alternatives?

I fear that I will be stuck either paying retail for illusion potions in the bazaar, or having to farm meats and track down a Shaman to do an insane number of combines.

If you know a trick, please tell me, it is greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of this actually working. I think it's one of those Norratian legends, where maybe one person hit a bug or soemthing and the word spread. I think I've heard of maybe 20 people trying this 'exploit' unsuccessfully, never heard of anyone succeeding. Which is obviously a Good Thing btw!

It used to work but it's been fixed for a couple years now.

Back when Vox used to drop the Staff of Forbidden Rites (10-charge rez stick) it was used to "recharge" the staff. Sell a fully charged staff then an exhausted staff, buy both back and both were fully charged.

SOE initially tried to 'fix' the issue by making charged items sell back from vendors for tens of thousands of platinum. Eventually, they just fixed the code.

Edit: Couldn't find an explicit patch message saying "We nerfed this" but the pricing issue was addressed in the Oct 16, 2002 patch:

"Merchants now highly value the Staff of Forbidden Rites and will only sell them at an extremely high price."

Jophiel is, as usual, on the money. Items could be "recharged" this way.
The gimmick with the potions was that a merchant would pay the same amount of money for a ten dose potion as for a one dose. A player could then recoup some of the cost of buying a potion, say a gate, by selling it with one charge left.

Thanks for the update guys... It was an understandable change for vox staff, just wish they would have nerfed that exclusively. I used to recharge gnome potion this way and it worked out to somewhere between 20-30pp a charge. I guess my days of pretending to be a shorty are over (bazaar supply is unreliable and none of my old shammy friends play anymore).

Guess I have a lot to get used to in the new EQ. Oh well.

Cheers!

Appreciate the offer Jon, but I am on Cazic. So if anyone on CT is willing to do the combines, I can provide the supplies, maybe we can get together) Thanks again!

This worked - at least until the great Alchemy overhaul - but had little to do with recharging the 10-dose potions.

And excuse my newbishness about the recharging 'never' working: I activated my EQ account on 22 Nov. 2002, so I just missed it by a hair :P
