WoW is the clear winner.

EQ requires grouping which is hard enough to find even when you are amongst the higher levels. A new player at lower levels would have little or no chance of matriculating through the ranks. Also with eq's rapid expansion rate you would probably keep falling farther and farther behind.

WoW is completely soloable. Has a MASSIVE population on every server so grouping is easy when you decide you want to group. Also they attrack tons of new players every month so there will be many people who are new to the game as you would be and alot of guilds/help to progress through the game.

Bottom line is this is probably the worst time in its history to join eq and it will get even worse tomorrow.

Each has its ups and downs. ATM you'll find alot of talk about EQ dying on Alla's forums, however its far from that extreme.
WoW has alot more players than EQ and a more independent play, however thats really all its got going for it IMHO, and its my opinion so flamers shut the f***k up.
EQ has a much more mature fan base, Graphics may be dated, but if you ask me thats good since you dont need a top of the range comp to play it, and the newer zones have better graphics. EQ population is slowly declining, but that does not mean its dead.
I played WoW briefly and hated it, the animated graphics and once you reached 60 there was nothing to do but raid, were as eq provides AA's

.... Umm eq has lost over 80% of its player base since WoW was released. On every server I that i stay in touch with people on, even the top guilds are recruiting en mass. Bottom line eq is dying and soe should consider another server merger.

BTW overall I think EQ is better then WoW also. But I am not blind to the realities.

When EQ started out, it was very much like a semi exsclusive club.

Jophiel and others gave a very good explanation of why this was so in a recent thread.

It then became very broad based as the Luclin expansion happened to co-incide with the release of the first LoR movie and SOE made a big promotional push.

Now it has gone back to being a lot like it was at the beginning, a rather exclusive little club, that for my money is just great.

For me, the Kunark - Velious period was great fun, Luclin - PoP became overcrowded and unpleasant in many ways, OoW - TSS has been a golden era.

After hiding in instance missions and old "abandoned" dungeons from the "madening crowd" for a couple of years, I've recently enjoyed mixing with the TSS crowd who don't seem to spam the world with inane chatter or train zonelines and random groups of people the way Luclin/PoP/OoW people seemed to.

and where exactly did you get those statistics?
EQ is not dying, merely the population is declining, that does not mean its dead nor dying. There are important unexpected events that could happen for all we know that could cause a boom in EQ population, who knows. I'll consider EQ dying when SoE stops producing expansions and letting it kill itself, but until then, we have a while to go

EQ is not dead by any means, slowed down yes as everything does. WoW will eventually decline as more and more of the MMO market gets spread out, just like EQ has. I played WoW, there wasn't enough challenge, and frankly I could seriously do without all the 3lit3 l33tists screeching about their "phat lewtz".
I miss the hub-bub that used to be in EQ but not as much as I am enjoying the serenity of being able to enter KC or something without wondering if I am going to die upon entering (sometimes).

You can compare and contrast all you want but EQ was one of the original's and it's tenure has gone beyond any one's expectations. Seriously it's been what nearly a decade? When WoW weathers as well then by all means come in and disturb the tranquility all you like... until then QFT.

So I'm in Nurga last night, soloing with my mage to build my Chardok faction up so's I can summon my crew to the royals and whatnot, and for a long time I'm the only one there. It's nice, I'm clearing a bunch of placeholders and getting nameds to spawn and generally just having a good time, chatting with my guildies who are all busy grinding in Grieg's.

Suddenly, I'm not alone in the zone any more. A group of mid-forties dudes comes running up single-file, all following a pally(who I assume is their fearless leader, because he's in front), and they all simultaneously wave at me. The pally asks me if I'm after something and I tell him I'm mostly there for faction and he says "Okay, I'm just going to go down this tunnel here and 6-box".

6-box.

6-box.

EQ is awesome, I mean, would you ever see someone in WoW paying for 6 accounts?

... dying?, slowing down? declining? we can equivicate terms all night but whichever term you prefer is fine by me. Yes somehting extraordinary COULD happen then could lead to an eq renaissance. But that currently isnt the case and thus not relevant to the OP's question.

EQ has lasted a long time very true but again how does that pertain to what the OP asked?

Like I said eq is a wonderful game but in the context of what the OP asked everything I said was completely correct.

As a player that cut his teeth on original EQ.. got bored.. left.. and tried every other mmo that would accept my credit card info... I'd have to say that I still prefer EQ over WoW.. Hell.. there are about 4 MMO's I prefer over WoW..

WoW is just too easy for me.. I bore easily if the game practically plays itself.

According to statistics that I believe are relatively reliable, because I think they probably are, and are within the realm of actual possibility; 75% of WoW users have wet dreams about giant bunny ears on elves. While a mere 33.33% (repeating, of course) of EQ players fantasize about being half-elves and checking out their hot elven relatives at family reunions.

I think it is safe to say that WoW is on the decline since it started. Before quibbling over whether it has 5 million active subscriptions, please note that the exponential rate at which its player base was growing, is now declining. So even if players are being replaced at the rate of loss or greater, they are still in decline, which obviously means less player growth, which means it's DYING.

Believe in the power of truthiness, and you can't go wrong! Anecdotal evidence is much more convincing than so called "real statistics". Pulling numbers out from somewhere behind you is more satisfying than "research". If it is your gut feeling that 7 year old EQ is 'dying', then that's enough evidence for me!

P.S. All other mmog's in existence are played only by ******* mothers, sweatshop style gold farmers, communist aliens, and unlaid American boys and boy-men.

Numbers are pulled or extrapolated from a variety of sources since SOE stopped releasing any hard data once they faced actual market competition. If you can talk SOE into releasing their EQ subscription numbers, go for it. When they say they have as many accounts now as ever, I'll make sure to take note of it.

Until SOE balls up and releases the data, folks will make guesswork out of whatever unofficial metrics they can gather. If you want to sniff dismissively at it, knock yourself out. I don't think anyone is worried about convincing you.

as usual excellent post joph.

I sent another email to the people at MMORPGCHART to see when they are going to publish the new chart they do every 6 mos. It shows eq at 100k and dropping if my info is correct. As soon as I get it I will share it with you all.

Well said Jophiel. If Sony had anything to crow about, they'd be doing it. Any bets on when the next server merge will be, lads and lasses?
