Trolls? Where? Who?Follow

#1 Feb 01 2007 at 3:25 AM Rating: Default
This may seem like an odd topic to have on such a site like this, but it is not. People who are seeking day and night to cause mayhem and chaos are amoung some of the common places that we hang out and live out our everyday lives.

These people find a topic or person out of a crowd and pick on them just to provoke an argument or to simply get on people's nerves. They impose their values or opinions on you wether you like it or not. They bash you or say things like "bump", "cheating is for losers, learn how to play the game", or "noob", "nub", "newbie".

Being new or an avid player is not a bad thing and they have no reason to bash you or to make you feel like lessor person for that. That's the main reason why I never pvp and whenever someone chalenges me to duel, I just give them the finger ("/rude") and if they say anything, I just type "/ignore".

In my book the ignore list is only temporary, because people change, eventually wether they like to or not, so giving more chances shows them theres no hard feelings. Unless the person is a Troll and I do not mean if they chose Troll as their race in game!

I have read a dozen pages on what exactly a troll is, but the two best I've come accross are:
Essay = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:What_is_a_troll
Dictionary = http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/troll
You can find more, just put "troll" in any search engine and see what you find. I'm sure you'll suprise yourself.

Why do we play these foolish games day in and day out on forums and in chat somewhere in game. They do the same thing in real life. For many years I have dealt with their kind and I look upon them as I would a single cell organism under a microscope. They have the ability to change, but sometimes it's just beyond their own comprehension of the situation.

I would love to write my own essay about this jerkoffs who just ruin every place I like to call home, be it that a rpg or forums. What's their deal? They have no life in the real world and they see to it so they make your internet or gaming life a living hell? They're parasites, plain and simple. They feed off your bad emotions and live off you like you're prey. Natural present day Vampires.

I think I've talked long enough, let's come to what's really important. I have provided factual points, in my own words to help people in the right direction when dealing with Trolls.

*How do we know if we're a Troll?
*How do we know if someone else is a Troll?

You should ask yourself several questions.

*Does the person ever try to get something out of the conversation? Some kind of improvement or we're they just looking for a fight?

I always try my best to make the best of any situation, no matter how big of a jerk a person is, or how angry they make me. If not, just log off and come back later. Everyone needs to unplug every once in a while.

A sure sign that you have a Troll infestation, would be nothing but stuff that is "copy & paste" as if they can't conjure their own words or thoughts on the subject.

There's nothing worse than a Troll who can't come up with his own argument and just reuses other people's words. Or how about one that swears every other word and just goes for personal attacks everytime you say something he doesn't like.

Part of the reason that person is a Troll or became a Troll, had partly to do with their avoidance of the facts or "Gotcha journalism" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotcha_journalism). You see what they try to do, is distort the facts to the point that it supports their ideals, instead of yours.

A true Troll will turn the tide against you on your own turf. (This includes GM's "Game Master" or CSR's "Customer Service Representative" or DM's "Dungeon Master", alot of them are Trolls!)

Which brings me to my next topic...

*Do we tell them they're a Troll or confront the problem area bluntly?

I'm always being completely honest, but put in the nicest way possible, is not entirely a bad idea. The person may respect you more if you talk to them like a human being, and you might even make a new friend. Please bare in mind there are consequences for these leaps of faith.

Do your own research! Do not beleive everything you read! Trolls specifically take advantage or readers who only see one side of the story and use them to suport their bias or other forms of predjudice. Myspace is no exception.

A person who only reads a certain amount or area of interest is another form that ultimately turns them into a Troll, because the end result is that their mind has become narrow. Redundant methods and laziness will follow as a direct result of the thinking/behavior patterns being fixed. Free your mind!

Know your place...

If the person is in a position of GM/CSR/DM and they're a Troll, it is probally a bad idea to take off the gloves and go round to round with them.

For instance they can ban you because they feel like it or put hidden marks on your account or character, that most of time only they know about.

Guild or Clan Leaders/Officers are no different from the tools who run these games, they are in a position of power and will abuse it when they see fit.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support confrontation, but there is a right way and wrong way about confronting people. Use your common sense or best judgement.

I have left plenty of guilds/clans and forums/games because of Trolls with the idea that there was nothing I could do about it and I let it go too many times.

The more you show them that you're not going anywhere, that it doesn't bother you, you're not going to change for them or anyone else, just because they don't like you, should be where you gain your strength.

Persistance is the only way to win against a Troll. Show them you mean business.

The more they see that their efforts mean nothing, they become angry & frustrated, the gloves come off, the true colors shine through, be it darkness or divine light.

It all comes down to one simple thing...

*How bad do you want to make the world a better place and is it worth becomming like them over it?

"He who fights monsters, looks inside himself until he sees his enemy looking back at him through the endless void..."

I hope what I have learned with my own experiences are helpful to those of you who learn that they too might have been in the same situations and maybe we agree or disagree on how to deal with such.

Peace and Excitement to you all!

This has never happen to me, nor have i seen it happen, if a GL abuses his or her's power everyone would most likely leave, meaning no guild. And i dont think you should pigeonhole every guild leader/officer just because a few guild leaders/officers are corrupt!

btw what does QFT stand for? :-P

Great picture Felicite :)

Trolls and their ingame counterpart griefers both put a lot of effort into inflicting any kind of pain in anyone they can.

They completely obliterated the PVP servers for EQ (why do you think there is only one PVP server).

Sony has done a decent job of reducing the ability of griefers in EQ from disrupting people's entertainment. However, one advantage that griefers DID get is the existance of so many instanced zones. On the one hand instanced zones are hard to grief. But the cost to the EQ community is that instanced zones reduce desired social interactions between players. Chalk one up for the trolls and griefers.

The most annoying thing about griefers is that if they DID succeed in destroying, say, Everquest (or whatever game or forum they were griefing), they would just move on to the next game or forum to spread their hatred and bad will in a new place. Unfortuneately there is no "good" way to deal with these creeps. But I think that Felicite's picture is about the best that can be done. Ignore them and move on.

All I said was if that person is a troll. not every gamer or forum user is a troll. my point is, being a troll is a bad thing. no offense, sorry.

Actually at this point, I'm pretty fed up with people who classify as a Troll. I think that's a lil more than a bad day. I'm not going to name people, because my char profile is public, but I will say that those who have wronged me usually know it because I don't speak to them ever again or I've told them off. I've met plenty of GM/DM/CSR's who are tools. I thought being Irish counted for something. Looks like I got the badluck side of the spectrum. Anyways, if you're not on the same page as me, it's ok, glad ur having a good time, if you are, then best wishes.
