back in the day... starting all over againFollow

Sorry if this type of post seems repetitive but i've been really thinking about getting into everquest again lately. I played way back in the day when VoX or nagafen were a big deal and it was easy as pie to find a group to level with for hours in the dreadlands. Going to EC for endless trading (god i miss that)

due to random things in life i ended up quitting and recently got back into gaming. I gave WoW a shot and it just wasn't the same feeling that EQ gave me. I didn't even attempt EQ2 because everyone had a negative input in it and i tried the VG beta and found it to be very sloppy and not ready what so ever.

Let me get to the point here, starting as a lvl 1 shaman, druid, cleric, or necro on sleeper or the other progession server with no Platinum no twinking abilities could i still easily level? could i even maybe find people leveling alts to group with?

random question, do people still run around Everfrost killing mammoths, icy orcs, and ice giants?

sorry to sound like a total newb but what's double boxing?

I really hope it's worth playing again because i REALLY miss this game

Once an addict... ;-)

Welcome back, I'm sure you'll find EQ a completely differnt, but hopefully still very entertaining experience. As I play on a regular server (not couting the phreaks, of course...), the only real answer I can provide to your questions is about 'boxing': You start up EQ as you normally would. Then you Alt+Tab out to desktop and start the patcher again. This lets you open another instance of EQ, although you have to have a second account, of course. Once that second character is up and running, you can Alt+Tab back and forth between them, effectlively playing a two-man group by yourself. (The command /follow is your friend!) You can of course just have two computers side by side and run EQ on both - that would also constitute two-boxing (maybe even in the original sense of the word).

The problem with two-boxing is, imo, the response time (your keyboard only 'works' for the active instance); I know people (well, one person, but if there's one, I'm guessing there are others) who can six-box effectively! (not sure how many computers he uses, though.) I find it difficult enough to play ONE character at a moderate level of efficiency. The time it takes to switch from one toon the the other makes it very dangerous to enter combat imo.

Boxing is very useful for getting a friend's toon with you into a raid or whatever, if your friend is unable to be there from raid start.

Unless you deleted your toons they should still be there.
If you want to ask about starting on the progression servers, read Jophiels comments on the weekend update.
It can be done.

"Everfrost" and "shaman" sounds like you're planning on making a barbarian. Barbarians have the easiest newbie armor quests so you should be fine between the tutorial and the newbie quests to gear yourself. My major issue has been that I picked a non-solo friendly class in a race/religion combo that has ridiculously hard newbie quests.

I haven't seen a large newbie population in the outlying city zones (QHills, Blackburrow, Steamfonts, Warrens, etc) but Barkingturtle says that the hotzones are active. I've never seen the tutorial with less than 13 people in it so all those new characters have to be going somewhere.

Most newbie zones on Sleeper are empty, but the hotzones in my experience have had one or two groups minimum in them and when I was in Unrest I would see upwards of thirty people at times. I'd definitely recommend a solo-friendly class, for this reason, if you don't want to spend all your time in hotzones. Also, take advantage of the tutorial; it'll put some coin in your pocket, get you your early levels, and even supply you with a bit of gear.

I just returned to EQ a little more than two weeks ago on Sleeper, joined an excellent guild full of folks who are working through the expansions at our own pace, and after playing too much have a level 49 mage. I will admit I focused almost entirely on grinding experience at first because I didn't need much for gear as a mage and I wanted to be able to join my guildies on raids ASAP. We had held at level 52 in order to raid Naggy and Vox till we had all the scales and books we needed from them, and having just obtained that goal, are now leveling again. Most people are just looking to get at least 55 in the next two weeks, and then we start raiding for epics. After that we're going to explore Velious to it's max. That could take us a year.

So, in summary there are folks on the progression servers who are interested in doing older content. That ship hasn't totally sailed.

If you're brand new to the game, I wouldn't play on the Progression servers (Combine/Sleeper), nor Firona Vie. The "established" servers will benefit you more with trickle-down gear, extra quests, etc. If you just bought one of the bundle packs such as Titanium, you won't even be able to use all of the expansions on a Progression server.

If you used to play EQ and left years ago, you might find yourself more comfortable on a Progression server since it's content is currently at about 2004-05 standards. But, if you're new to the game entirely, go for one of the normal servers and dive on in. Especially if you bought the Serpent's Spine expansion which supposedly makes the lowbie-level game much more enjoyable and productive.

Buying/selling PP contravenes the user licence and although not enforced very often by Sony, it can get you banned and account closed.

It doesn't really give you a "leg up" either, although the e-pene types have to do it to be able to link some supposedly uber item to whoever it is they feel the need to brag to, in reality the way the game works, having a 2.0 ratio or 1.8 ratio or 2.2 ratio weapon, makes very little difference to your real effectiveness. Yet you could pay many thousands of PP for it.

Learning how to play your calss well is way more important than your equipment and nowadays there are literally thousands of quests/missions that give very good equipment. The most important thing you can do is to make friends with some decent players who you can group with regularly and you will never have equipment problems.

My advice: Don't start on Firiona Vie. Haven't tried the Progression servers myself, but the language barriers alone on Firiona will make it incredibly difficult for you. Not too many lower levels on FV either; I'm only managing because I'm a beastlord with friendly guildies. A good server to start on would probably be Stromm; there are tons of people on that server, so it's easy to get a group. If you do choose FV as your first server, feel free to send me a tell, my toon's name is Jurrel.

As for plat buying, I think it lessens the gaming experience, not to mention it violating the EULA. Do what you want, but you won't make too many friends by advertising that you buy plat. One last thing, this isn't WoW, so try not to spam the general chat with nonsense. ^_^ That drives me nuts when the general chat is filled with random noises and song lyrics, so I end up leaving that channel half the time. Have fun!

Welcome back! And let me tell you it will be a new experience restarting. I did this too some years back and had a lot of fun! (mainly because some hard to get gear at the time was now never camped and I had fun gettin the items even if there was much better around).

yes call CC with the original CC# and if you have your login name and they should be able to help you. Would be handy if you also can dig out the original EQ CD you installed with at the time for the number of the disk (? not sure what you call that in English)

Have fun! And if you decide to restart on AB holler, I am sure my guild can dig out some stuff/armor for you, we're always willing to help coming backers and noobies ( without ties attached)

actually if you still have access to the email address you had back then, you can go to the station site and use the station name recovery tool to get your station name, and then the password reset tool to gain access. Granted, this doesn't work if you no longer have access to the email address that you had on your account back then.

I'd check out the normal servers, while there isn't a real lowbie population on many, there are still alot of people who help out new players and alot of "family" type guilds who play low lvl alts to group with people on a regular basis. make a level one on a few regular servers and progression and get a feel for the atmosphere, see what you like best.

Also, if you're rerolling racial exp penalties are no more, and since you mentioned shaman / necro as classes you might consider, some races are ideal for that and (read: regen) and no longer have the downside of the exp hit for that benefit.

If you happen to make an iksar on povar, shoot me a tell!
