EverQuest on Linux & PS3?Follow

#1 Jan 22 2007 at 1:04 PM Rating: Decent
I got my ps3 (60gig) system and from what i'm told it has linux already installed as an inferior version that you can't do much with. I'm in the process of downloading YDL 5.0 for my ps3. I also have a sony 1gig usb flash drive and have more than two kinds of dvd burners. I'm kind of linux noob and need help to figure out how i can play eq1 on my ps3. ideas and sugestions would be nice. thanks.

To those of you who are not aware about linux on ps3, here you go:

You need a keyboard and mouse to install.

1. go to http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html to install the boot loader installer.

2. go to http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/ps3/othero
s.bld to install the actual boot loader.

3. go to one of the following:
http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/yellowdog/iso/
ftp://ftp.yellowdoglinux.com/pub/yellowdog/iso/
and download the YDL 5.0 installer.

4. burn the YDL 5.0 installer ISO image to a DVD, using a DVD BURNER!!

One minor detail not mentioned here is the fact that in order to burn the image, you need a dvd burner program that supports larger than the 2gig buffer, meaning that Nero will not add a 3.5 gig file to the list to be burned, it tells you that the file is too big and find a smaller file. I know this because I have Nero. So I used the program found here: http://www.imgburn.com/ It's free! Enjoy.

5. download and read the instruction manual before attemption to install YDL 5.0 to your PS3:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/

6. Back up all of your game saves, downloads, media, etc. before installing YDL 5.0

If you need a bigger selection of mirrors to download the YDL 5.0 ISO from, you can find them here:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/downloads.shtml

Not a bad idea for websurfing and such but why on earth would you want to play EQ or any other PC game on a PS3?? Graphically they are pretty weak compared to a computer.

thats not to say PS3's are weak they are great at what they do, they just lack the muscle to do the things computers do.

because eq is so old that the ps3 will render the game without any problems, as long as you have the right video card. hell i know people who run it on a pentium 2 and pentium 3. LOL

IIRC ... Lodi over at eqinterface.com is and has been running eq on linux boxes for years. You may want to pop over there and ask him.

Good luck and come back and let everyone how you made out.... sounds cool =)

np. I'm constantly working on running eq on linux/ps3 and will fill in with all the details. for starters i'm using a 1gig flash drive for the boot files and dvd burner for disc images. if that doesn't work because sony prob blocked against burned cd's, then i will take my ps3 online and download the images. there is a site that offers yellow dog 5.0, but they want you to pay for membership, i'm gonna download it for free.

One factor, the linux os can run a more stable if not more powerful os than windows or mac osx, using less system resources doing it, thus, games and such have more system resources at their disposal.

I didn't spend much time with the Ps3 but I don't think it has a full version of an OS on it? I mean technically the Xbox runs Windows 2000 in a dumbed down version but you can't play any windows media on it. Same coudl be said about the 360. In any case best of luck to you though. I really don't think it work though. However once again I don't know much about the PS3. I had one for 4 days and I took it back because it was overpriced and has no good games.

Wouldn't you have realized this before you bought one?

actually I been thinking about doing this, ever since they mentioned that the ps3 was in development. I got the windows emulation software almost intalled. I'm stuck on the pre-install tasks, without the right libraries, programs won't run. the worst part is they don't tell you why like windows, you actually have to figure it out on your own.

if you want to try the same thing i'm working on, you'll need the ydl 5.0 i mentioned above, but you'll also need the emulator for windows programs from transgaming.com

the system can do it, and better than my twinked pc i got atm. it's one of the best gaming high end machines i've seen yet. speed and power of this system are unbeleivable.
