My personaly recommendation: Be a Drakkin solo class (Druid or Necro or another good solo class).

To do this of course you'll need TSS.

The stuff below is just my take on it.

Currently EQ shares the same problem as old EQ... levels 1-51 are fun and entertaining, while at level 51+ EQ changes from a much-better-than-WOW type leveling game to a serious-players-only game. TSS makes levels 1-50 even more fun than it ever was before as the EQ development team did an absolutely fabulous job of putting together high quality entertainment. However, the developers apparently ran out of time for the 45-59 TSS content and while it is an improvement over what else is available, levels 51+ start to be lots of repetitive killing of the same mobs over and over and over, and if you are starting from scratch your xp will be rather slow in these levels, especially if you are going to grind AAs. Oooops not if... WHEN you grind AAs.

However, these are some of the biggest improvements that TSS offers over old EQ:

Old EQ: soloers had to pretty much get their equipment from the bazaar. Farm PP, buy equipment from the bazaar.

New TSS-EQ: Soloers can get decent equipment from drops that can be soloed, but also and mostly can get equipment from quests that can be done solo. Not only that, but the quests are well written in the sense that you can solve most of the quests without having to read up on Allah to find out what the next step is. The quests are very fun and entertaining, and doing the quests nets you xp along the way, PP along the way, and of course the rewards from the quests. This all by itself can make for an ok equipped toon. There are still a few items that you'll want to buy from the bazaar to help you out, but you can actually earn most of your equipment rather than relying on other people to earn the equipment so you can buy it from them.

I suppose that farming for PP and then buying equipment from the bazaar is technically "earning" equipment, but doing quests the TSS way as a way to get equipment upgrades is substantially more enjoyable and satisfying than the old way of farming for PP and buying the equipment from the bazaar.

The lower level areas throughout Everquest are sparsely populated. Furthermore, as a soloer being well buffed makes a huge difference in what you can and cannot kill (and how fast you kill it). The bad news is getting buffs in POK takes longer than ever, but the good news is that most of the buffs you can get through vendor purchasable potions, and the PP you earn in TSS zones is more than enough to pay for the potions. About the only buffs you can't really buy are the cleric HP buffs. There ARE HP buff potions but they are seriously underpowered. The healing, haste, and mana regen available potions are very acceptable and do their job well.

For some reason the business side of EQ absolutely refuses to promote this game to new players and bring in new blood. This is very much a shame as EQ is an awesome game, and is better than it ever was before. What this means is that finding groups for levels 1-65 or so will be hit and miss and most of your time will be spent solo. If you want to enjoy EQ as a social game, then what you pretty much need to do is talk to 5 of your friends to play (or 2 friends and each can 2 box) and consistently group with your RL buddies.

This is my take on your question.
Your mileage may vary!
