Thinking about coming back....Follow

#1 Jan 06 2007 at 7:14 PM Rating: Decent
Well, ive had my fill of WoW im totally bored with it, EQ was and probably always will be the most fun MMO ive ever played. I have a level 70 shaman, but if i come back i kinda want to start fresh and make a new toon, im curious though will there even be anyone for me to group with, i havent been on EQ in quite some time.... How many people even play now days, is it worth the reinstall to come back?

Thanks

I'm coming back after about a 3 or 4 year lay-off and the patcher and updates are running now.

Its gonna be weird for me because I was more of a casual player. I too am really thinking of starting a new character. I had 5 mains basically that I played which were a Bard, Druid, Cleric, SK, and a Thief which ranged from about level 28-35. I'm thinking about starting a Monk or Ranger from scratch and not twinking him even a little. This way I can get back into the swing of things without messing up in group or losing a bunch of experience on one of my other toons.

The thing I'm least looking forward too is tracking down missing spells/songs. I didn't have them all as it was and I'm sure that some spells have been added since I played last.

The thing I'm looking forward to most is tradeskilling. I really found myself at times being rather unproductive with my time and money but isn't that really what EQ is all about.

Exthellion, I hope you get some more helpful posts than mine but I'm excited about coming back and I hope this helps you.

I appreicate your response jack, hopefully someone that is actively playing can tell me what the population is looking like, in regards to lower levels, as i want to start fresh, although i have an idea what the answer will be. Anyway best of luck to you.

Population is insanely low for lower levels, but starts to pick up around lvl 15. I play on Maelin Starpyre and the population is lower than when i played before(recently came back). I've heard that FV is almost deserted.

It depends a lot on servers but for the most part there are not many NEW players in the 1-40 level ranges. You will often find alts and bots in these ranges though. Hot zones are key to grouping at the lower levels. As long as you are willing to form non-standard groups and work hard at putting them together yourself you'll do just fine.

Expect to spend much of your time alone in zones, especially if you're in the old world. The days of leveling with a full group in Freeport or Crushbone are far gone. But Paludal caverns has not lost it's popularity - it's just one group there now instead of 15-20.

If you purchase the new TSS expansion you will find many players in the first two newb zones there - Crescent Reach and Blightfire Moors. The last 3 toons I've created I played in those zones. After that move on to the hot spots. You will need to be flexible and possibly a bit creative but if you play during the normal player hours for your server you will find people on. If you're a shift worker or have odd hours - chose your server carefully.

Finding people on and convincing them to group with you may be another issue all together. With the new regen system, downtime is a thing of the past - and for many players it's just easier and faster to level by soloing. Look for an active family guild - even if it's small. I know there are several family guilds on my server with no level restrictions and plenty of lower members. Ask around or visit the guild lobby advertising boards.

Personally, I love EQ and though I've dabbled in many other games I always come back. It's far from dying off and well worth the installation. But it isn't WoW - which for me is a good thing. EQ is a more mature player base and many have invested years into their accounts and characters. Over the years SoE has attempted to market EQ to a broader player base - but in the end we are a unique bunch of people who enjoy the journey more than the end result.

As a side note Exthellion - there's no reason why you couldn't come back with your Shaman. It wouldn't take long to learn the changes to the game since you left, get some gear upgrades, and fall right back into place. If it's a character you enjoyed before - you'll enjoy it again.

With your level 70, yes. If you start a new toon you can probably level it up into the 30's pretty quick and easy soloing. You'll find little in the way of groupage much lower than that, except maybe a quest pick-up group in the Gloomingdeep tutorial and/or in the TSS newbie zone(s??).

Sony doesn't release the numbers of how many are playing and on what servers, though there are other threads around here discussing it if you want to take the time to search. Seems to me since the servers were merged the numbers have levelled off a bit. Enough new and returning players to fill in for those leaving. EQ may see another mass exodus in the next few months with all the new games coming out. Who knows?

There's also some statistical info floating about the intraweb with numbers of people playing various MMPORG's, over time, again, if you feel like doing the search.

Welcome back.

Edit to add: Like Netos says, no reason you can't get back into the game with your Shammy. With the ever-harder hitting mobs, and their awesome buffs it seems Shammy's are more in demand for groups than just about any other class.
