Bard, or Monk?Follow

#1 Dec 20 2006 at 6:35 AM Rating: Decent
Good Morning EQ! I am currently sitting at work thinking of making a new toon... i have played a bard to58, and a monk to32 on Zek, but have moved back to Bertox my original server. Was wondering what EQ was in more need of, more monks, or more bards? I really enjoy them both, just looking to be useful at this point, any ranting would be greatly appreciated!
P.S. i have 70 druid, 61 shaman, 58 beastlord, 47 Warrior on bertox already, so getting gear wont be a problem...

Depends if your carpal ligaments are in good shape or not...Smiley: wink

Both are interesting choices and not over-populated. Bard may have the edge in solo-ability, but I have been able to solo a monk at the lower levels with great success (level 64 now). Who do you group with most often? Monks bring a tad more dps and bards a bit more utility support. Both can be excellent for pulling. If you are in full groups most of the time you might need the bard's utility more than the monk's DPS. Smaller groups (tank + heal + 1) might need the monk.

Understatement, it's a literary device...(Didn't want to run down bard dps and make them feel bad...)

With the new Melody command (not thatnew) singing the songs wont be aproblem....What i'm really looking for is to NOT have lfg up all day. How do you enjoy your monk at lvl64?
Edit: AND if you were to start all over from the beginning would you make the monk again?

Melody sucks, at least until you get enough points in the non-fizzle AA's. The only time I found a use for it was during long chant kites while soloing where a dropped note and restarted melody wouldn't affect anyone.

I see you've played a bard to 58 so, if you've found it works for you, then that's good I suppose. I never found much use for it over traditional twisting.

I normally have 5 different hotkeys for 5 different melody's, making slow/snare the number one in them so if the song stops the primary one is the first to hit anyways = )
What is everyone thinking would be more useful though? New bard? or New Monk?

You didn't answer about grouping.

On the average, I'd say a new bard simply because they have more utility and EQ isn't exactly short on DPS classes. Both monks and bards can pull well and pulling is about the only reason why someone would need to choose a monk over a rogue, ranger, berserker, beastlord, etc etc.

Classes that require more thought/effort to play generally have a smaller population base.

Try an enchanter!

Monk is great, but I am alt crazy as some will tell you. If we are in a situation where monk dps and pulling is required, I am on it. She cannot solo as much, but there are spots. I cannot solo places that give the best xp, but there are still some. Best is to have a good tank and healer with you.

I would start a Drakkin monk if I did not have one.

(My bards, sadly, are bazaar mules...Selo's at level 5 hehe)

Enchanter huh? Played one to lvl12, couldnt get the feel for not being able to do damage... Charming is fun, however i noticed alot of Enchanters sitting in POK all day lfg and buffing. Not my Forte. I like to be beneficial, however in the battle as well. Monks are great fun, as are bards (not to mention selo's with a good drum!) just trying to figure out what the high lvl content needs more of...

My bard is 71 and is very rarely LFG. I only got my monk up to 35 and gave up on him (as I have with many an alt).

Like Joph pointed out, the bard tends to get more invites simply because they have a broader offering to bring to the table. When people are looking for a puller they either look for a monk or bard first, depending on their preference and the situation. When they're looking for DPS they can usually fill it with whoever is around since there's always a DPS around LFG. If they're looking for a slower the bard is typically 3rd or 4th on the list. Same thing for hastes, etc.

Then make a cleric :)

Seriously though, unless you have a group that has similar playtimes and levels, your going to be LFG for a while with any class you pick. If you want to be most productive while /LFG, make a necro. Flipside of that is they aren't high on the priority list for invites.

Best answer is play the one that interests you most. When you get good at it you'll be on peoples friends list and invites will be more common.

I dont have problems wiht my shaman,my druid, or my warrrior getting invites, however im getting that itch = )
i feel like i want a new toon... Just getting some feed back on what is needed more. Especially raid style (hence why i was thinking bard).

Depending on what level of raiding you are doing, pulling is all but un-needed so monks just dps and bards just sing.

You might want to check out the guilds on your server and look at their roster to get a better idea of whats needed.

My guild is farming Tacvi and doing OoW raid trials, we have 3 monks with +85% attendance and a couple in the 30% range. We have 3 raiding bards and all have under 50% attendance, generally there are none on our raids. Another guild that's slightly ahead of us has a pretty even distribution of high playtime monk/bards.

Personally, if I had it to do over again I'd go Bard. My current raiding main is a 75 rogue with ~1500 aa's 2.0 13khp/2500 ac. I have a 75 shammy on a second account and a 69 Bard on a 3rd. I raid with my rogue and generally do guild groups with the shammy, the bard is a "secret" toon that is not guilded that I play when I want to just mess around.

I'm finding that I want to play the bard a lot more lately though but still am unlikely to raid with him.

I'd definitely go with the bard, from the utility perspective. Monks tend to fall into an uncomfortable middle category - if a group wants DPS they will probably choose a zerker or a rogue. Whereas, as stated, the bard can pull, slow and CC. Their lack of personal DPS is made up by the DPS they add to the group.
