The Sleeper... A questionable storyFollow

#1 Dec 07 2006 at 12:32 AM Rating: Decent
Ive never played EQ before but i have a question on a story an old friend who played religiously once told me. Bear in mind that this conversation happened roughly 4 years ago, so ill try and recount it as best i can. Im looking to see how much of what he told me was true and how much was BS. The reason i ask now is because i was telling a friend the story the other day while we were discussing MMO's and he said that it couldnt be true

My friends characters name was Goyle Kisser, on Zuberuk server (hope i spelled that right) and he was a halfling druid. He was in a very high level guild, and even claimed that on a raid once he soloed a dragon and was allowed to take all the loot off of it for himself for doing so, earning him an epic helmet of some kind, but anyway thats not the story.

The story went like this. He had this item that supposedly would wake The Sleeper, so he was running around this cave looking for the room it was in. He was running from some mobs when suddenly he ran straight through a wall and ended up in The Sleepers chamber. He wasnt sure what to do so he contacted his buddy and told him what had happened. His friend made his way there and entered the room with him. Both of them were shocked, and Goyle decided to leave the room for something. As soon as he left, his friend messeged him saying that he had been killed by the sleeper the moment Goyle left the room. They figuered the only reason they hadnt been killed before was because of this item Goyle was carrying. Goyle contacted someone in their guild who could rez and had her come to them and rez his friend. Now all three of them were standing in this room wondering what to do. Suddenly there was another person in the room with them. The guy said he was a GM and that he wanted to warn them of what they were about to do. He said that even the GM's didnt know what would happen in game if The Sleeper was awoken, but that he couldnt stop them from doing it. So they did, dunno how, they used the item and woke him up.

At this point I believe they ran back out of the mountain to see the sky filled with dragons flying out of the top of the mountain going in all directions. Shortly afterwards, Goyle's father, who also played but was in another guild, contacted him saying "What did you do?!!!" He told him what had happened and asked him what was going on.

His dad answered, "A dragon just landed right outside the entrance to Freeport!"

Goyle responded, "Really? Cool! Did anyone die?"

His dad's response: "YES!! Everybody died!!!"

Goyle and his friends had apparantly begun what was called the Dragon Wars. But a few days later, the GM's had to reset the server because this had caused a number of bugs and glitches in the game.

So thats it. Anybody been playing that long that can tell me how much of his story is true and how much is lies?

I suppose that the GMs didn't know exactly what would happen the first time the Sleeper was awaken.

For that matter, I bet the Devs didn't know either or else the code wouldn't have been so buggy Smiley: wink2

A legend...probably like most, based on some truths and embellished or discombobulated over time.

I'd like to see a swarm...flock...bevy...of dragons descend on PoK sometime.

I had heard that the first time the Sleeper was awaken, the GMs had no idea what would happen. The Sleeper then went through every zone and killed everyone that was on at that time. As far as the rest of the story, I have no idea if it's true or not. I don't even know if what I heard was true, but sounds pretty cool anyway.

The Sleeper went from his tomb to Skyshrine, killing folks on the way as I recall. If you weren't in one of the zones of carnage though, you were safe. He didn't go tromping around the Commonlands or anything.

Some details seem true, aside from the part about this magical item, never heard of it. And then there's the fact that the Sleeper was only awakened through the efforts of many a person on raids.

...seems like your friend took some truth and embellished it to make it seem like they were almost solely responsible. Kinda fits when you consider their claims of soloing other Dragons =p

Total BS.

Example - there was no item to wake the Sleeper. It was done by killing all four Warders. Killing a Warder took a raid force.

I don't think much of it is so. But I am no expert. I have a friend that told me several years ago on Solusek Ro server a guild woke the Sleeper and from that day forward any time a guildie from that guild logged in the sleeper killed it no matter where it was in game. Rumor was the guild had to be disbanded and the guildies had to form a new guild. Finally several guilds got together and killed it. I don't have a clue if any of it is so, but my friend certainly wasn't saying he or even his guild killed it, he just said he was playing on SR when it happened.

naw, his carnage ended within a couple hours, and he wasn't killed at all until the zeks did it a year or two ago.

Its my understanding when The Sleeper was awakened he pretty much did Zonewide harmtouches in several Velious zones. He was pretty much killed twice on Rallos Zek but both times a GM despawned him. ACtually that story has some truth and rumor to it also. Anybody you ask who was there has different stories. Of course I was not actually there, but I was listening on the serverwide chat channels. Anyways the first time it got down to a single digit a GM just despawned him claiming that the mob was not meant to be killed because it had no death animation. For starters that is BS because anybody who has played on a eqemulator server has soloed the sleeper and watched it die.

The 2nd time they tried some say they did kill it, others say it despawned at 0% health. I was told by a person raiding the mob that last time it actually died and simply depoped (kinda like when you kill a pet I suppose). Others claim it was despawned again by a GM before it reached 0 hp (0% on a huge raid mob could still mean it has 10,000+hp of course). I could easily see how a person who was actually raiding it would assume they killed it with that few of hp even if it was depoped though. In either case no loot was to be had. I have to say I think if the GM's was not going to allow them to kill the mob they should have depoped it alot sooner. I mean they spent several hours and had countless deaths trying to do that.

Actually, he summoned and killed everything, I never saw a harm or death touch, and as I was able to safely gate while he was munching on the shadowknight from my group, I can attest to the lack of a zonewide version of either ability. I recall seeing hits for 1700+, which at the time this happened (Velious era), was insane. He also had a say or shout that he used (mostly caps, as I recall) each time he summoned a PC/NPC, but for the life of me I can't recall the exact message. He did say/shout the person's name once or twice though.

Reminds me of the stuff my friend used to tell me before I played EQ.

I vaguely remember him telling me about having Lord Inquisitor Seru's Sword of Truth... yet, I know for a fact that he never had a toon above level 17... and was never guilded. Even though I do remember stories about Emperor Crush coming out of CB and chasing my friend to the guards...
