What is so attractive about Everquest?Follow

What makes Everquest so addictive? Why is it better than other MMORPG games such as World of Warcraft? And why would you spend hours playing Everquest? I'm doing a paper of this so give me your thoughts.

What makes you say it's better than WoW? About 10x's more people play WoW than EQ? /puzzled.

See what I want to understand is you make the statement that EQ is a better MMPORG than other games like WoW. WoW has many many many more people playing it. That might lead some to the opposite conclusion of yours; that WoW is the better game.

In before the "EQ > WoW > FFXI > your mom" posts start.

No disrespect to you, it's just we see this topic pop up every once in a while and it ALWAYS turns into a flame fest within 15 replies.

EDIT: See. :) /points up

When you point up you end at my post. Is my inquiry a flame?

First, your questions already imply negativity. If you just want to present a one-sided paper why even bother asking? Obviously, you've already decided EQ is addictive and "we" spend too much of our time playing it.

Secondly, who are you? What are you writing about? Giving a little more information about the project you're working on, the school you go to, or anything at all really will help you receive better answers.

Third, you aren't the first person to ask these types of questions. Search the forums - you'll find many, many people asking the same thing - also writing papers and whatnot. Nick Yee is one of the best of these - you can find his work on The Daedalus Project here: http://www.nickyee.com/hub/home.html

And he tells us who he is!

No, not implying that what you said is a flame really, so I apologize since it does appear that way. What you said is simply a question, no doubt, but there will soon be many more posts that WILL be flames and that will undoubtedly use those types of examples to back up their "argument".

An example of how it will likely turnout.

Also, I thought this was interesting. I understand that if you're writing a paper you'd want both sides of the story. The argument just gets old I guess...

I'm a bit insulted. My mom's easily better than FFXI.

Of course, but my understanding from lurking around the site is that you have a couple of "fans" Joph, so they're bound to find you and call her out. :)

I like eq1 because it is more familar and not so restrictive (although the restrictive part is quickly changing). Games like Wow and eq2 have too many restrictions. I don't know alot of details on WOW, but every item worth having in eq2 is either attuneable or no trade. Also every item has a strict required lvls, and your characters ability is strictly limited. In eq1 people have found VERY creative ways to push there toons to limits never thought possible. This is simply just not possible in alot of newer MMORPG games thanks to restrictions.

I note you also posted this in the WoW forum, but a better method would be to do a proper survey, relating to MMORPGs in general, as so many others have before you. Game vs. game comparisons will quickly end up in unproductive "your chosen game is crap" threads.

My Mom is better than FFXI, about the same as WoW, and depending on whether we are raiding or not, just a hair better than EQ. Wait...what was the question?

OP needs to refine his research question. He has 3 or 4 questions (including one the subject) and makes subjective assumptions for a few.

Perhaps stated poorly but I think his main question should be:

Why is EQ so addictive?

This assumes it is addictive for some people, and there is no denying that assumption. Part of the answer for this is why it is attractive [to you].

The second question:

'Why is EQ better than...such as WoW' assumes something that is pure opinion. There may be some 'facts' given to support the assumption but pure number of players should not be the sole criterion. More people live in China than the US, but which is a better place to live?

Who is to say one MMORG is more addictive than another?

You may want to state:

Why are MMORPGs so addictive [for some people]?
In particular [since this is a EQ board] why is EQ so addictive?

Have your audience identify itself: addicted or non-addicted (in denial?)

OMG, I am writing a research paper...cut that out...
