Turning into a monster works how?Follow

I want to know how turning into a monster works. I don't mean the monster mission quests but just the shroud keeper guys in pok. If you turn into a level 1 imp and go rampaging around a newbie zone do you get xp for your character for that? How do you unlock the different monsters to change into? Do you lose xp if you die and can you group with normal player characters and other monsters?

To change into a monster hail a Shroud Keeper in PoK. The monsters you can change into are called shrouds. There are several "lines" of shrouds, like undeads or elementals.

You start out with one monster available in each line and you unlock the next monster in the line by gaining shroud xp, which you earn while fighting as a shroud. You can check your progress in each line on a tab on your inventory screen. Once you reach 100% in one shroud the next shroud in the line is unlocked and you begin again at 0% for the following monster. While shroud xp is generally much slower than normal xp, the first 1% takes ages to earn so keep that in mind when you've killed 100 mobs and seem stuck at 0%.

Any xp earned while you are shrouded is transferred to your character when you unshroud, but the xp is the actual amount earned as the shroud instead of a percentage as we usually think of xp. So, if you fight as a level 1 shroud then level 1 xp transfers to you, which will probably not move your character's main xp bar at all.

I think you do lose xp if you die, but like earned xp I think you lose the amount of xp appropriate for the level of the shroud, not your main character. So dying a lot as a level 1 shroud will probably not hurt your main character.

What are the benefits of unlocking new monsters supposed to be? Are they more powerful or something? Are there ways to get gear for the monsters?

I haven't unlocked many shrouds but if they are more powerful then the difference is marginal from what I've seen. I mainly wanted to get to the Evil Eye because it looks cool.

I have not seen any gear that works with shrouds other than the random weapon that might come with the shroud. As a side note if you plan on meleeing, experiment with and without the weapon.

Shrouds are not as good as a equal-level player in the same class. The main reason I like them is it allows me to group with guildies of all levels. Or, if we're getting a small group going and really lack in a certain ability one of us can switch to a shroud that fills the gap. My guess is that's the main point of them - they offer a way for you to have fun with your friends regardless of your level or class.
