Dots:
*Shaman: have a good array of dots and this is their primary damage mode. However, at lower levels (till 60 if i recall) shaman dots BREAK ROOT. This makes soloing harder. At 70 shaman can pile on a huge amount of dot damage that won't break root, and have dot lines in poison, disease and magic. At that level
*Necros: have a great variety of dots but necro dots do not break root.
KITING:
* Necros are the master kiters. Mobs can be snared, the pet sent in (no taunt) while the mob hobbles after the necro, who loads more and more dots. If things ever get out of control, just Fain Death and loose agro.
*Shaman are poor at solo kiting though excellent in a kite group. Shaman have no snare, so kiting (and yes it CAN be done) is done at full run speed. No time for resting, no time for fizzles. The shaman dog can be on the mob, and use dots to kill it and keep agro. As a partner in a kite group or duo, as long as the other player can snare, the shaman adds heals, dog, dots, slows, debuffs and most anything else needed.
PULLING:
* Necros are awesome pullers, so they DO get places in groups. They can split pull with FD (at high levels even the pet can FD with the righ AA ability), snare pull and FD off agro back at camp.
* Shaman can pull quite effectively but have no way to split mobs apart from rooting, so its fairly situational
CROWD CONTROL
* necros provide very effective crowd control by kiting off excess mobs.
* shaman at the high end have good crowd control by kickback root, normal root and a degree of kite/root capactiy, as well as slowing every mob in camp
WIPE CONTROL
* necros can rez, necros can FD. Necros are hugely appreciated on raids and in groups because they can FD when others are wiped, then rez back a cleric (or the whole group) if they have the components on board.
* shaman have little capacity to help in this department, though at the high end with the right AAs, a shaman if left standing can issue a Call of the Wild and summons a player (hopefully a cleric) back to his or her body. They also get a new spell in TSS that gives them a chance of immunity DA style at 0% health with a HoT to restore health. This may help a shaman zone out, but shaman have no other way to loose agro.
BUFFING
* shaman buff every stat and every resist, and virtually every capacity (invis, lev, run speed, underwater). About the only thing they don't buff is a damage shield, and they can make pots to do that.
* necros have one shareable buff
PET POWER
* shaman dog is a warrior with the capactiy of the warrior of that level. It is not that powerful and not that tough. Mage pets and BL pets beat it easily
* necro pet has high damage output and takes damage at least as well as shaman dog or better.
OTHER SPELLS of interest
* high end shaman get timed invis (AA) and can make pots for Invis to Undead. Shaman have a very strong line of debuff spells to reduce the damage output of a mob, lower its resists and remove and spells (such as damage shield)
* necros have both invis and invis to undead as spells
