My girlfriend has recently given in and decided to put EQ on her laptop. She'll be joining my main, a Vah Shir berserker, once she levels up to be more or less on par with him. She wants to play a caster, but also be able to deal out some damage as well. I was thinking she should try either a shaman or a druid and see if that works for her. The catch is, she's never played any sort of computer game, much less an MMO. I'll be showing her the controls, but that's about it. Which class do you guys think would be better for her?

IMHO I would go for the shaman for buffs, healing, and slowing if you two plan on grouping together alot.

A caster but do damage, to my mind would be a shaman, beastlord, or a druid. (Though druid and shaman melee will drop off as you level.)
As a pure beginning class a lot of folks say druid is good for a beginner. I would also say look at SK, Paladin and Ranger just for the melee experience. Let her play around and if you have TSS see how she likes the drakin.

I'd say Druid for simplicity, but Shaman for better long-term duoing. You want her to have a good time though, so have her try the easier of the two.

Of the two you listed, I think the Druid would be easier to learn for a new player and offer plenty of options if you plan to duo often. I'd also recommend a beastlord. Easy class to learn, and well pets are just fun. The Vah Shir beastlord seems to appeal to the woman folk :)

I let her fiddle around on my account with my shadowknight to let her get the feeling of a melee class (figured the newbie area of Nektulos would be better than throwing her into the Paludal Caverns with my 'zerker). She started a half-elf druid and a Vah Shir shaman and played around with them both in Gloomingdeep. So far, she seems to be getting into the shammy, but I'll suggest a beastlord for her to try out as well. Thanks, guys!

ppl saying to play a tank class like a SK or a pally is a bad idea they are probly the 2 most gear depend classes in the game and take a long time to gear up befor they can tank anythink worth while but i do agree sham would be great to help u both gets groups and a sham ber would be a great dou if Ber could take a few hits but for more of a meele would go with a ranger but u will soon go to a bow untill higher levels and u get a ton of AAs and good weps then back to meele

I don't normally get on people for spelling or grammar mistakes, and I'm far from a grammar ****, but I couldn't even read that. There wasn't even a single punctuation mark in the entire run-on sentence.

There really is no perfect starting class, at least anymore. Druid and ranger used to be the "ideal" starting classes. The biggest thing she has going for her is you. You can help her out with questions, give her advice, etc while you're right there in the room with her. She won't have to be so dependent on finding answers on her own online. She'll still need to do some experimentation to get the nuances of things like aggro control, mana conservation, etc, but that's to be expected of anyone playing any class.

As for her wants: necro or wizzy fit her "caster that does some damage" role very well. If you guys are planning on grouping with friends a lot that would be fine. If you guys are just planning on duoing a lot though, I would suggest shaman, hands down. While druid has some nice buffs, a reliable snare (versus the somewhat 'zerker snare), ports and pretty good heals, the shaman has melee-entric buffs, pretty good heals and SLOWS. Shaman plus berserker is just more of a complimentary match then druid and berserker. So, that match would likely make things much easier for you later on. Here's the catch. Making it easier doesn't always make it more fun. :) I suggest letting her experiment with a few different classes on the test server using /testbuff just so she can get an idea of how they work.

My wife had never played any type of computer game (other then solitaire) before I got her hooked on EQ.

Her first character was a ranger, and she leveled her all the way to level 70. She loved the ranger because she was simple DPS with a few spells, and did not have to worry about getting the group killed because of missing a heal, slow, aggro, etc. For a first character, this turned out to be a great choice.

She then leveled a 'chanter to 69, and loved the fact that she was so much more vital to a group (crowd control plus the buffs and slowing).

With regards to druid or shaman or beastlord, I would also suggest beastlord. With the beastie you get some spells plus she can experience melee. The added advantage is you can duo longer with a BL then you can with either a shammy or druid.

Good luck and have fun together.

I think the best starting class is Ranger. They Melee, solo and cast. Not the perfect duo for a Zerker but she isn't a bot.

The first thing I did back when I 1st started was make a warrior ( might have been a zerker) and just gen the fundamentals of the game down. Basic controls, interaction with other players as well as npc's, and was also a great way to start out and get all those deaths outta the way that we as players now wouldn't let happen, if possible (guards, falls, drowning, etc.)

Right after that I made my wizzie. Since I figured out the melee part from the throw-away toon, I wanted to do the caster toon, learn about the spells and how they worked and how to be effective and this ended up being my main for over a year until I made the SK and was set after that.

So basically long story short imo, if she wants a hybrid kinda thing...take each part separate and learn from each, then make her desired toon. Who knows, she might like one of the beginner ones most. I never thought an SK would be my main, but here I am years later and happier than ever.

P.S got my g/f to play too, she made a necro 1st because it took out the having to deal with others and she loves it (Up to 41 now iirc).
