Thinking about comming back to EQFollow

#1 Nov 02 2006 at 3:12 PM Rating: Decent
I've been thinking about this a while and I'm really interested in comming back. I started playing EQ before kunark was even released (god i miss those days). Played off and on ever since. Been gone for a few years now though.

Anyway. I'm wondering if its still the same old eq? Where you pretty much have to live/eat/breath eq just to accomplish anything?

I remember staying up for 3 days straight to level up. I remember staying up for 3 days straight waiting for a stupid rare spawn that showed 4 times and never dropped the loot I needed.

Is it still like this? I was single before, but my wife would divorce me if I poured that much time into a game.

How is eq these days? I notice there are 15135614363634 expansions now.

Are the servers dead? Which is most popular? ETC ETC.

Just dump all the eq information you can about starting back up on me so I can see if its something I'd like to do.

Not trying to be a prick but how about checking through the 50 bazillion other threads about the same exact thing. This question gets asked at least twice a week so I am willing to bet finding other threads that will answer all your questions will be rather easy to find.

I looked but didn't quite get the answers I was looking for.

Like.....starting a new character?

Is it even worth it? To hit lvl 75 would take forever. Forget powerleveling, i know no one that plays eq. I'd be starting completely on my own.

Old expansions pointless? I'm wondering if all the content I've missed out on is now pointless. I imagine the large portion on the server populations are maxed level and are just exploring the new stuff.

Does leveling still take forever?

Is it still extremely hard to get groups in game? I had a 57 necro and would spend the first 2 hours of play trying to get in a group (that was some bs and mainly the reason I quit).

Obtaining rare items and quests?
It is still a HUGE ordeal to obtain the best items? I remember camping a single mob (pyzjn for the glowing black stone which was the best int item in the game for a while) for days trying to get this item. Or having to set up all-night raids which lasted anywhere from 4 to 8 hours.

Things like this are what I'm curious about.

As far as the difficulty of starting 100% fresh with no help, between the tutorial and then moving into the low level TSS (The Serpent's Spine) zones (if you buy this expansion) you should be fine on gear as TSS does a decent job of handing out plenty of sufficient gear throughout the levels (Not certain if this drops off at say, 50+ or anything, but I've seen great examples for the lower to mid-range)

There is still a fair amount of time to sink into leveling at higher levels, but at lower levels the dings can come pretty quickly, and having the TSS expansion would give you the best odds of running into other lower level toons to group up with as well.

EQ still has a lot of timesink in it, especially for the high end raiding game of course, but it is a good bit more casual friendly (some would complain "dumbed down") in my opinion.

I guess it just comes down to if your fine with doing what you can with what time you have, I've noticed some casual players enjoy EQ at the pace they are forced to and do what they can to enjoy with what time they have to play, while others are annoyed to no end that they can't be a part of the top tiers of EQers, which ruins the gameplay for them...

...as long as you think you'll have fun, I see no reason not to come back, roll up that new character, and your biggest help would just definitely be to research and ask the questions to learn of all the advantages you have at your disposal now, compared to years ago when you last played.

So basically being in the top tier of EQ (basically experiencing all the expansions and their endgame content to their fullest - which is pretty much what all these expansions have been for, Just higher level endgame stuff.) I would still have to play 8 hours a day from the sounds of it or just accept that I'm not going to play the best parts of the game.

Still like this eh?

The best part of the game for myself and jonwin is the player chat among folks as we fight and or wander around. Doesnt take us a lot of time to do that.
Other things like raiding, epics, do take a lot of time, but its not why I play.

Well Rgouge, I just can't say I'd recommend coming back if the one focus you have on coming back is being part of the very top tier of the game, while having a limited playtime, thats just not going to be possible...

...but you shouldn't take that as if there will be zero raiding opportunities to you, or the ability to be a solid player at the higher levels, it will take more time than someone who has 3+ nights a week to raid and such, but it can be done.

I personally have a ridiculous work schedule that is 60 hours a week minimum (6 days minimum) and is overnight as well, which keeps me from even considering joining a guild that raids often, I am still able to attend 2 semi-open raids per weekend on my server, which is plenty fun for me.

Decide what part of the game is really going to be what you crave if you should come back, and then decide whether it would be attainable with your play time and such, thats really all you can do.

What's worth it or not is up to you, but you can level a character up pretty quickly. Get into the 50's and grouping/raiding opportunities are abundant.

Yes, the majority of the people we be playing on new content, but I know of at least 3 guilds on my server doing PoP raids, and a couple others doing GoD raids. The old world stuff still has some relevance for various quest drops but they're certainly not the place to gear up. Most of it can be single-grouped now, however, so you'd not have to persuade a lot of people if you do want to go explore them. Level 70-75 toons are abundant and many are willing to go explore some old world dungeon as it beats sitting in the GH lfg.

No, especially if you utilize the hot zones and MM's.

It's easy if you're willing to lead the group. The lfg windows are often full just waiting for someone to take the initiative and lead a group somewhere.

Typically the better items take more work to get; at least that's how it's supposed to work in these kinds of games....:/

This is a problem? As a necro you could get a level and/or a few AAs in that time *while* LFG. Grouping is only for those times when conversation with Jaboner gets dull and you yearn for some live companionship. Frankly, I've had little trouble grouping as a necro whenever I felt like it - there are many on my server who seek out my services.

To be completely honest, though, for someone who is starting over purely from scratch I would advise one of the newer games such as EQ2 or WoW. EQ is rather dated, after all, and many playing these days (like me) are in it for the nostalgia, old friends and 6+ years of continued effort. I've steadfastly refused to follow my girlfriend to the other games due to the time and care I've put into my characters (even though they're not maxed out or uber by any means).

Get 2 accounts: 1 for you, 1 for your wife.
Get TSS on both accounts.
Make Drakkins.
Enjoy the quality time that you and your wife spend together as a team.

As I pointed out in another thread, the parts of the low level areas of TSS that are not casual-friendly is a very small piece of the pie.

There is a lot to do, and progressing through the levels will occur at a nice steady rate. Plus you'll be able to gear up you and your wife to have level appropriate equipment and at level 51 you will not be wearing next to nothing.

Forget the 71+ game.
If you and your wife at still playing hard in 2009 then you can start thinking about 71+ afer all :) But if you get that far you and your wife will already have spent countless hours working together as a team and enjoying EQ in a major way.

nah dont goto EQ 2 or wow.. complete waste of time..
start out in TSS with a new toon.. doesnt matter what class or race.. TSS has the gear from lvl 1 to lvl 75 it is one of the greatest expansions EVER..

I think EQ is more lowbie-friendly than it has ever been before. I just came back (fell off the wagon) and I can't believe how helpful and fun the new tutorial is (It's no wonder I quit in frustration the first time I played EQ back in around 2000). I'm building a Paladin, one of the few classes I haven't tried, and am REALLY looking forward to taking him through some old-world undead content. At the same time however, I'm looking forward to seeing the new Serpent Spine content, and the Depths of Darkhollow content (haven't seen much I can get excited about re: Propechy of Ro).

No boats, free ports in the PoK, vet rewards ( if your playing your 6 year old account youll get them all ), no exp rezs' in the guild lobby, potions available for everything and the Bazaar for all your droppable needs. and the new downtime regen really aids you if your a soloist.

EQ has been totally revamped, ( dumbed way down ) some good some bad but its not the same as it was in Kunark.

Also if you gonna start a newbie charactor I would suggest that you try << TEST SERVER >> its the same as any other server however...
1. double exp
2. all vet rewards to all players ( including all 8 account chars )
3. all new items come here first, all new quests start here as well.
4. Lower population then proddies mean alot of camping opportunaties
5. ALL EXPANSIONS ARE FREE ON TEST SERVER ( however you will have to buy them if want to play on other servers.)

Hope this helps,

Safe hunts and rare drops!

Be careful about suggesting Test Server. It does have alot going for it, but it is extremely difficult to find a group till around 50ish. Even at 60+ you will probably be soloing more than grouping.

The good news is that with double xp and vet rewards any character even non solo class chars can easily get to level 50 by themselves fairly quickly.

Remember though, it's not easy on the server. You are going to have to be self sufficient. You're going to have to quest your own gear (bazaar has very limited items) and really learn to solo for xp.
