Is it even worth it? To hit lvl 75 would take forever. Forget powerleveling, i know no one that plays eq. I'd be starting completely on my own.
What's worth it or not is up to you, but you can level a character up pretty quickly. Get into the 50's and grouping/raiding opportunities are abundant.

Old expansions pointless? I'm wondering if all the content I've missed out on is now pointless. I imagine the large portion on the server populations are maxed level and are just exploring the new stuff.
Yes, the majority of the people we be playing on new content, but I know of at least 3 guilds on my server doing PoP raids, and a couple others doing GoD raids. The old world stuff still has some relevance for various quest drops but they're certainly not the place to gear up. Most of it can be single-grouped now, however, so you'd not have to persuade a lot of people if you do want to go explore them. Level 70-75 toons are abundant and many are willing to go explore some old world dungeon as it beats sitting in the GH lfg.

Does leveling still take forever?
No, especially if you utilize the hot zones and MM's.

Is it still extremely hard to get groups in game? I had a 57 necro and would spend the first 2 hours of play trying to get in a group (that was some bs and mainly the reason I quit).
It's easy if you're willing to lead the group. The lfg windows are often full just waiting for someone to take the initiative and lead a group somewhere.

Obtaining rare items and quests?
It is still a HUGE ordeal to obtain the best items? I remember camping a single mob (pyzjn for the glowing black stone which was the best int item in the game for a while) for days trying to get this item. Or having to set up all-night raids which lasted anywhere from 4 to 8 hours.
Typically the better items take more work to get; at least that's how it's supposed to work in these kinds of games....:/
