I'm a new player who has just bought EverQuest: New Dawn UK server addition from Amazon. Basically this has the original game, along with the first 3 expansions, Ruins of Karnak, Scars of Velious, The Shadows of Luclin. It also has some UK servers to play on.

I missed the original EverQuest craze back in 1999, and I have decided to buy the game seeing as my computer is too crappy to play anything new (for those who want to know, I have windows 98, 1gb graphics card and 256mb ram).

What I want to know is are there still people actively playing on these 3 expansions? I get the feeling that the whole world is gonna be like a ghost town because it seems that you are all playing the most recent expansions which I doubt my 5-6 year old computer can take. I feel kinda sad I ignored EverQuest originally, but I am hoping to catch up on all the things I've missed out from. What are the most active servers? Where do most people hang out? Incase my computer can play the newest expansions (for example TSS), do I need to have all the previous expansions the play it?

To play in TSS you just need original eq + TSS, but your computer won't handle it. My dell has a very respectable video card with a gig of ram and another 256 meg of ram on my video card still lags up in the new zones (when only one boxing). Since plane of knowledge is now open to everyone regardless of expansion I must issue a warning, there are a lot of people there and it will lock your computer up good with lag, I'd avoid it if possible. Good luck with the game though.

Yes you will find people there, but not a lot.
To avoid lag in zones like pok you can look down at the ground and avoid areas like the main bank when a MGB (mass group buff) is going to be cast. Things like turning off the sound in your game file and not using the updated character (ie toon) graphics can also help with lag.

Hmmmm... I want to say I remember there being a problem with Windows 98 and ME, something along the lines of it not supporting DX8+. I don't know if they were able to resolve that issue or not as when I heard about it I decided it was time to get a new computer. :) If that is the case then you won't be able to play EQ because it requires DX9 at the moment. Again, I don't know if they were able to fix this (either on the Windows/DX side or EQ side) so you might want to check out the official site. I'll see if I can find anything as well.

No it's Windows 95 that can't support Direct X 8+. I have Direct X 9 at the moment. Either way, it says on Amazon and the SOE website that it can play on Windows 98.

EDIT: I downloaded and played Escape to Norrath a while ago, it didn't run too well on my computer. But thats because I had the settings relatively high, but yea, I'm sure EverQuest will work.

Ahh, Win95, that's what it was. Thanks Sprollest, +1.
