Considering a return from exile to EQ1Follow

#1 Oct 20 2006 at 7:44 AM Rating: Decent
Hello Norrathians :-)

I'm currently playing only World of Warcraft these days, like most MMO gamers out there but a part of me wants to return to the game that started it all. I'm wondering if a few people could advise me somewhat.

I've played two extensive tenures in EverQuest, the first waaaay back in the day when I bought the game in 1999 several months after all the servers went live. I eventually quit the game in early 2001 and returned once again in 2004 to a vastly different Norrath that I soon adapted to. I played for several months until eventually WoW released, and have been playing WoW since.

But, I have several problems with WoW. Too many people, thus many technical problems that have been an endless source of frustration - and ultimately, WoW has far too many jerks. When I played EQ, being the max level (50, 60, 65, etc) meant something as it was difficult to attain. Levelling to 60 in WoW is far too easy. I currently have 5 level 60 toons in WoW, two of them completely epic'ed out gear wise. End game raiding seems almost as if Blizzard has training wheels on it for some reason. The world of Azeroth is pretty, but lacks the feeling of adventure. Alltogether it is like an arcade version of MMO's and I'm severely bored with it. The only redeeming value it seems to have is its PvP, which is what I spend 90% of my time in WoW doing these days.

So, I'm thinking of returning to EverQuest.

My question is, how well will I fare starting from scratch today? I wish to do end game in EQ, something I haven't done since 2000. I have no idea what server populations are like right now, or what the raiding scene in EQ1 is like. A part of me wants to reroll on my old server Fennin Ro (who knows who I might bump into), but this server is 7 years old and I fear that when I reach level 75 (or whatever the final limit is), I will be far too under geared for any consideration into raiding guilds that probably have a line-up of players with the most intense epic'ed out gear imaginable. I understand there are progression servers, which is probably my best bet, but from the looks of it they are crowded with old school raiding junkies (like FoH) who are making history all over again with raid progression.

Anywho, sorry for the wall of text and appreciate all responses.

There's actually a lot of these posts here (including the one right below this one at the moment).

From my experience most high end raiding guilds aren't quite as interested in your gear as they are some other things, primarily level, flags and AA's. Gear sometimes has an effect on the app but is usually fixed rather quickly when you start raiding with the guild so mostly they're concerned about the other things I listed.

As far as starting from scratch... people still do it. The latest expansion, The Serpent's Spine, has some AWESOME low level quests, both in terms of reward and experience. I started a Drakkin Cleric when it was released and went from level 4 to 5 doing 3 quests in Crescent Reach that didn't require me to kill a single thing and only took like 20 minutes. There are multiple levels of quested armor so you can upgrade as level, unlike in previous expansions where the only decent gear upgrades were for high levels. The 20's level armor quests even have mods like regen and mana regen.

Fennin Ro was merged with the Torv server quite a while ago to increase the population of both servers. I don't play on that server so I can't comment on it's population, but my guess is you'd be alright. A lot of the regular posters here are on Povar (Morden Rasp), including me. The population seems to be just fine.

Like Jiggidyjay said, your biggest problem won't be gear. They will require you to be level 75, and 500+ AA. Hit points and mana are important, especially considering some of the AOEs and the like that the bosses have, but you will find it easier to upgrade then get those AAs.

Your best bet would be to look for the 2nd Tier raiding guilds on a server. These guilds tend to raid several times a week, but have lower AA (if any) requirements in order to join.

I know their are several quality Tier 2 guilds on Maelin that are only an expansion or two behind the Tier 1 guilds.

are you a cool person?

heh fun to be with? not an ***?

not all guilds recruit toons/gear/flags (altho i do admit we do have minimum requirments now, lvl 70, 200+ aa and at least 3 sigs (anguish) but that is VERY low requirments these days, we look for people we want to be around). some go for the right kind of people.

we have people come back all of the time with outdated gear and it just takes a month or two to get em "uber" again.

to me, eq is better then ever. they have got rid of many of the tedious aspects but still has the depth. and a great "mostly" mature playerbase.
