does anyone have or know of a laptop that can be used to play eQ with no upgrades? that is pretty decent for under $1000 ?
I am using a laptop from time to time, although EQ's a bit shaky... I have a 2-year-old DELL (don't ask for the technical specification), so a newer one should work fine (and you will find some that cost less than $ 1000.-).
A laptop that costs under $1000 will run EQ just fine if your willing to lower graphic details in some ways...low texture resolution, and perhaps cutting down a decent bit on spell effects and it should run beautifully...
...I play on a HP laptop that has a 1.9 GHZ AMD Turion 64 processor, 1 gig of ram, a 128 MB video card...and it runs very well, the only thing i have disabled is the sky graphics (you'd be amazed how much of a difference having those off can make) and also spell effects are cut down to nothing (never been much of a fan of them)...
...every other graphic detail, such as textures and character models, is set to the best...and i play with the maximum far clip plane (only time I've ever really lowered it is on a raid, when dropping it to 75% or even 50% can help alleviate some mild choppiness, though I've never had it get choppy to the point of affecting gameplay in any way. As for normal group gameplay, it runs virtually perfect.
one note...kinda obvious one anyways...don't plan on running any other major resource hogging programs in the background while playing EQ, it will drag down EQ horridly, of course...
I paid $1200 ($1000 after rebates) at Office Depot, though I'd recommend shopping around for the best deals...those rebates can save you some serious money, once you go through the pains of getting them sent off...
...one final tip would be that a laptop that has some expandability for another stick of RAM would be a plus, would allow you a quick way to get a solid increase in performance if you end up with the money lying around sometime in the future...

You can play EQ on a brand-new Dell laptop starting for $500-600. It won't be anything great but it does indeed work. I currently play (when my account is active) on a 5-year-old Dell Inspiron that, admittedly, I did have to upgrade but it's only a P4-1.6Ghz with 512MB RAM and 16MB GeForce video.

Just got a Dell Refurbished Model...I use it for EQ and some other stuff. I had about 30 pictures opened in Photoshop just fooling around and that was the only time I've felt it got tested.
On EQ, it's pretty nice. I tried BF2 but it's tough without the mouse.
Think if you want it to be Vista compatible is one thing I'd say; I heard microsoft will offer Vista vouchers starting in mid-October with new systems.
I got an isnpiron with 128 Graphics card, 1.6 MgH Dual core(I've heard it's like getting a few tenths MgH for free); 1 gig ram; 40 gig hard drive; partitioned 12 gig. At the moment I have 5 hours left on the battery.

Yeah - a newer system with the Pentium-D or Core dual processors is pretty sweet. It's a big step up from just squeezing out a few extra megahertz.
What I'm waiting for, personally, is the new AMD X2 laptops. The first series (Inspiron 1501) is just a mainstream system, but once they get around to putting them into the XPS then I'll be happy.
And, whatever you do, get a mini-mouse. They rule!

Have a look see at what the Intel Vs AMD fight looks like.
AMD will have title back I think as king of the chips, at least till the next round.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. Out of the box it runs the game fine.
I have other issues with laptops; the mouse scroll zoom doesn't work, my auto-run button is in the wrong place, and then there's that dam touchpad that when accidently touched sends your computer into the unknown.

I have a normal size microsoft mouse, and the scroll wheel works as it should for zooming in and out...and yeah, the laptops that have the button to disable the touchpad with a quick push, is a beautiful feature....

I been playing on a Compaq Pesario M2301NR AMD athalon 1.6gig, 1gig mem, built in ATI Radeon video card for over a year now... love it ... with cell phone as modem (of couse prefer home wireless lan)...i can play anywhere and everywhere, cost 2 years ago new 1200$

forgot to mention .. the only thing is ... i play with a USB mouse ...cause the touche pad sucks hahah ... but with a mini mouse its just like playing on a pc.

I *can* use the touchpad to play if necessary, though it is a pain in the hiney. My Microsoft USB notebook mouse works perfectly fine, scroll zoom and all.

I agree on the touchpad, its so terrible that if I dont have my USB mouse for some reason, I don't do EQ...

I play on my Sony Vaio all the time, but truth be known I use a ext Mouse, KB , and monitor so after the laptop is turned on its not touched again till I turn it off.
But it plays fine, I did have to turn the graphics down a bit to play with out lag.
