EQ over satelliteFollow

#1 Sep 25 2006 at 12:39 PM Rating: Decent
Anyone have experience with EQ over satellite? My kids live with their mom out in the country and the only option they have for high speed internet is satellite. Anyone have any experience? If I am right I think it uses phone line for the uplink. Will EQ run this way? What about 2 computers at once?

I currently play EQ on DSL and it runs fine. I dont know about playing with 2 computers though.

The latency is awful.. like 1000 millisecond ping.

It's plenty fast from a capacity (at least on the downlink) to run even 5-10 machines.. but since you are a second out of sync (compared to 0.1 or 0.2 for those of us on DSL).. the game is a little harder to play at the upper levels.

It's playable.. but more so for slack DPS classes.

So my daughter, being a bard (main) and cleric (secondary) it would really suck huh? Thanks for the info.

I played Everquest over satellite in New York while at a cousins house.

Everquest is unplayable over satellite.

You will die alot due to being out of sync as mentioned and you will get constant ping spikes.

If I may ask, what country only has a satellite option? I have lived in over a dozen countries and the only places with satellite only have been islands.

The poster was referring to living in a rural area that is not able to recieve conventional internet service, as such a satellite connection is the only way feasible to get online...

The download side of things is horrid of course, but I'd recommend dirty old Dial Up over Satellite for EQing...

...assuming the phone line is nice and clear and your connection through it is rather solid, you shouldnt face more than a mid 300s to low 400s ping.

So..Does anyone know a good provider for dial-up? I've used satellite for a year or 2 now and its really gone down the drain..Thanks.

Mentioning what country you are in would probably make for faster replies...

I used Starband for the first 2 years I played EQ, and yes you are always 1 sec behind on everything in the game. But other then a few times it was playable. I got my shaman from 1 to 56L on sat only.

The worst part is 1 when it rains hard or snows (blocks the signal) or 2 when they send a dumb *** to install it and they don't get the dish set 100% on signal. Other then that it was better the dial up by 500% but would not trade it for my cable.

I currently use a wireless modem that connects to a tower somewhere in the distance. I also live in a rural area where cable won't be an option for years. I refuse to use dial-up and don't want a satelite dish.

It works ok. Somedays it drops the signal every 10 seconds which makes adventuring very difficult. Other days it works fairly well.

I miss my cable modem but wouldn't trade it back since I enjoy living away from the hustle and bustle of the city!

Sometimes the best things have to be had at a price and in that I agree I would trade speed for country living anytime L)

Have any more information on this? I currently live a mile or 3 outside the city limits, in Southern California..

The service is available in my area through a local internet/phone provider called ntelos.

If you put three w's in front of Ntelos and a dot com after you will get their website. It's portable broadband.

When I lived in Bosnia one of my ISPs changed from a normal connection to a satellite.

A dial up connection on post war telephone system to an ISP that then used a satellite stopped me playing for 6 months until another company started up.
Plain dial up over those lines was OK 3 boxing.(Except for patch days)
Could not 1 box with the satellite in the loop.

I cannot edit my thread so I will apologize here.

I am sorry. I misread "out in the country" as "out of the country"

I too am on a satelite. I live in Rural Texas. I had dail -up for a long time. Telephone company has an exclusvie for the area as well and there is no digatl lines. that dial up server was extremely bad. so after several years i did purchase a satelite dish > Yes IT is bad at times very bad> i 6bx some times can do that just fine> But in raid setting There is Lag > with my cleric being my main That is serious issue ie: ch being late in demi planes (9 Any way i ended up having to leave that wonderful highranking guild i was in because of it> SIGH > miss them dearly but in mho I will keep it as opposed to dail up offered in my area
