SS only DD?Follow

#1 Sep 24 2006 at 11:00 AM Rating: Decent
This question has probably been posted 999999 times before. But are they ever gunna release SS retail? I do not own a credit card (im only 14) and it saddens me that I won't be able to stick with the game....Does anyone know if they have any interest on posting it on paybycash.com? So people w/o credit cards can buy it? (If they arent going to release it retail. I think this was a bad move on Sony's part. I have tons of friends who do not have credit cards in-game and rl)

Correct, SS is DD only. Wont get a box until next multi expansion compilation.

It sounds like that would be a horrible idea! I mean really. Their member base may not increase as rapidly because there wouldn't be as much advertising (game on shelf etc.) and they already took EQ Titanium out of all the major game stores (Best Buy, EB Games, etc.)

As opposed to how much money they saved by not having to pay for the boxs, CDs, shipping and whatever cut they give to the stores that carry it?

Look at it this way, SOE has to give a cut to retail stores or thier is no point in the stores stocking it. Lets say SOE sells it to the retail stores at $25 a box, plus each box costs $2 to make and ship (just pulling a number out of my *** here). So they are only making $23 per box in the stores instead of $30 per download.

This game has been around long enough to safely assume that almost anyone who would be interested in playing it has probably heard of it before. The advertising from a retail box probably isn't worth the loss per retail unit sold.

From a consumer point yea it kinda sucks but from a business standpoint it's probably worth it. I am willing to bet SOE collected the data on how many of their active accounts were paid with by CC vs. gamecard before they decided to make it DD only.

You can also do what someone in another thread suggested: Buy a visa or mastercard giftcard using cash and use it to pay for the download. It's a bit of an extra step for you, admittedly, but it'll get you the expansion at least. Or maybe you could cut a deal with your parents. Ask them to pay for it with their CC and you give them the cash.

Yes Yes, I could get a giftcard. But, my parents arent the biggest fans of EQ lol they still let me play it, but they wouldn't go as far as working with me to get an expansion lol.

It seems like paybycash.com expansions would be a decent idea. For those who don't know what it is, those who do not have credit cards and/or don't have a can't make it to a store that sells prepaid game cards goes to the paybycash website and selects a choice (30 days or 90 days) You print off a slip with your order number and a bar code. With the slip you also send in the mail actual money. (not money orders, even though that is an option.) And, they send you a game card code in your e-mail account. Why can't they do that with expansions? They could give you a code to enter (similar to buying retail) when they also would not have to pay for shipping and packaging

Now that I've looked at the site I see that they do in fact work with SOE for "virtual" gamecards, so I can't really see any reason why they wouldn't be able to do it with expansions either. It's quite possible that there is just a communication breakdown between departments. The people in charge of marketing TSS might not even know about the paybycash option to buy gamecards (it's more possible then you'd believe). I would suggest either doing a /feedback ingame or posting this same question over at the official EQ boards.

Dont forget, if you've been around long enough to recall, that they have done this before. Matter of fact they did it the last time they introduced a new playable race. LoY was download only, thing I hate is they dont even offer the normal $5 off for preordering.

Incorrect. LoY was planned to be DD only, but they relented at the last minute and sold a boxed version.

I stand corrected then. When I ordered mine there were still no plans for a boxed version, so I never did look in the stores.

True that.

When you go to the EQ website you can see a picture of a boxed version.

www.everquest.com

But maybe they just made what a boxed version would look like. Also, I have noticed in most expansions that DD comes out before retail it might mean that currently it is DD only but thats prolly not the case.
